In the Navy the REAL power lies with the Chiefs ( and one would be wise NOT to think of them as servants ). First Class Petty Officers wield a lot of power as well; Second and Third Class PO’s, not so much.

I was a First Class ( AWV1 ) before I became an Ensign ( theoretically senior, but not in practice ). I retired as a Lieutenant ( O3E ), one of a very few officers with a Good Conduct Medal ( only awarded to Enlisted Men ).

Those who serve in the military would know. I can only wonder what a real Sergeant HotForWords would be facing if she saluted her Commanding Officer in such a way (tsk tsk). And to think that we brought you up better, Marina. Our proud men and women should get a proper salute.

On a lighter note, it is nice to see you wearing red this weekend.

    Very nice lesson.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com Marina

    What is a proper salute?

  • http://mikechimeriblog.com MCLIJazz

The outtakes are hilarious at double speed…or is it less than double?
Other ranks: Specialist, Colonel, Lieutenent Colonel, General, Major, Major General, Captain, and that’s all I can think of at the moment.

  • originalistrick

Your salute was perfect(for this vid)!

In the Navy, I was a Petty Officer. I always wondered how they had the brass to actually call me petty. :???:

  • seesixcm6

Dear совершенная Марина Орлова, I’m sure most sergeants will tell you to keep your fingers together when you raise your hand for a salute. You look wonderful in a red dress and that Army fatigue cap likely has never been on a more beautiful woman!
I’m glad you took a day off on Valentine’s Day and I hope you had a happy day! When I mailed my Valentine’s Day card to you, I knew I might be just one of many, but I still wanted to mail it to you! I hope your day was happy and that you feel appreciated by so many of us.
Some other ranks in the Army are: Private, Private First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General. (I had four of those ranks.)

  • hot-dog-lincoln

I reached the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class… and I always wondered why the word Petty was used for this “esteemed position”. Maybe, Captain Jack has the answer… we must investigate!

  • seesixcm6

How to salute: Raise your right hand with fingers together and flat palm and raise it to touch the right brim of your hat. Keep your elbow up, to at least the level of your chin. If you are returning the salute of an enlisted person or a junior officer, you must bring down your salute swiftly, so that they won’t need to hold their salute too long. It’s a formalized greeting with centuries of history.

I can’t imagine any military personnel having a problem with Marina’s salute… so says SSgt Dez

In fact, keeping military bearing while being saluted by Marina may be a true test of military discipline.

Had Marina been a part of a military organization, we would expect her to salute “correctly”. As a civvie, she did just fine.

Your salute is appropriate in the context of this lesson.

For wider context, googling (“how to salute” site:www.youtube.com) brought up comprehensive instructions on saluting in various situations – guy seems serious enough to be more or less correct in his instructions.

Googling without “site:” qualifier brings up documents on how to salute.

Petty here means small – as in under the ‘real’ officers. A PO1 does have a little authority; in aviation the difference between AN and PO2 wasn’t negligible, but it wasn’t near the difference between a CPO and a PO1. I made it to AWA2 and then went to college ( where I made AWV1 ) on a Navy scholarship ( NESEP ) and retired as a LT.

Technically CPOs are also Petty Officers, but I’d hate to be the one to break the news to one.

    .

Your remark properly ends with a smile  . The lesson has an undercurrent of hilarity (boisterous merriment or laughter). During the salute, observe the seriousness of your bearing which contrasts with the sloppiness of the salute and thereby adds to the hilarity. Moreover, were this lesson to be made in a manner that is true to a military setting then there would be no arguments and explanations between you and your sister — your sister would be demanding that you “give her ten” push-ups for insubordination to her order for coffee!

What is written in red on your cap?

Homework: Colonel, Captain, Admiral, Major, Lieutenant, Private, Corporal, General, Yeoman. Is Grunt or Gofer (as “go fer this, or go fer that) one?

  • hs4mm

PS to 16.2.2: The beginning few seconds of the video help set the tone for the rest of the video. In the beginning few seconds of this video, everything is serious — except for the sloppy way the hand is used in the salute. And it is the contrast that helps set the tone of hilarity. And as the video continues, the hilarity continus to builds — but not for so long that the video disintegrates into a meaningless comedey — soon, the lesson’s message is inserted.

About the only military rank I see missing so far among the student body’s homework is the Commander-In-Chief, as in the highest rank in the American military, held by the President of the United States.

On a side note, I wonder how many Presidents have been generals before becoming Commander-In-Chief. George Washington comes to mind first, but there are definitely others like Dwight Eisenhower.

I bought some because they were on sale for $4 bucks regular $10 bucks for 18oz/510g. I can eat darn near the whole box in one day. That’s an extra $10 bucks a day. Sometime $20. That’s a nice dinner out vs some berries. I need to find some that are a bit cheaper. Funny thing is black berries are free. Well if you pick them yourself. They are a nuisance in the Pacific Northwest. Anyone know where I might look for a better deal. Local farmers market here sucks.

Navy has one less chevron, and they are pointed down (not like this ^). For example, E4 has one chevron, E5 two, E6 three, E7 three and a rainbow, E8 birdie has a star over his head, E9 two stars (one over each of birdie’s shoulder.) E1 has slick sleaves, E2 two stripes, E3 has three stripes. The stripes are also different colors, depending upon rating – corpsmen white, firemen red, airdales green, seamen are.. uh I forgot, blue, white?

  • http://toastytech.com/guis/bobboot1.gif Bob

Correct. The highest rank in the British is Field-Marshal, the equivalent of the Royal Navy’s ‘Admiral of the Fleet’, and the Royal Air Force’s ‘Marshal of the Royal Air Force’.
The next ranks in seniority in the Royal Air Force are Air Chief Marshal, Air Marshal and Air Vice-Marshal.
As you mentioned, the word derives from Old High German marah “horse” (from which we get mare) and schalh “servant”.
Now a word request [constable]. As it contains the word stable, I wonder if that was also something to do with horses. :???:

I was referring my ability to swim. I was a backup rescue swimmer for downed Navy pilots. I had to be able to penetrate the chute (membrane) in case I got tangled up. I don’t know what the hell you were thinking!?!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/dezdkado Dezdkado

Correct. This is the same for other billets, such as Secretary of the Navy, Army, etc. These are not ranks, but definitely positions of great authority.

All enlisted ranks in the USMC above PFC have crossed rifles under the chevron(s).

The USMC First Sergeant does have 3 up and 3 down and a diamond. However, the Master Sergeant in the USMC has crossed rifles.

Sergeant Majors and Master Gunnery Sergeants in the USMC have 3 chevrons and 4 rockers. Where the SgtMaj has a star in the center, the MGySgt has a bursting bomb. The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is still an E9 in grade, as this is a billet (of additional authority), not a rank.

If you discuss a word in a comment (e.g., esquire) does it mean that you have investigated it and decided that it is not good enough for a lesson? Or are you discussing esquire here, even if it is good enough for its own lesson, because this lesson is somewhat incomplete without an elaboration of esquire and the lesson on esquire might be too far away in the future?

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I like that. Self-evident, eh? But can you prove this? This is a very, very interesting sentence, Leonard. Let’s think a little bit about these words. If indeed all men are created equal, why then some of them act like pitiful, stupid morons, bullying the shit out of others all their sorry and insignificant life, and why some others are great and helpful thinkers, or if they’re not at least they shut up and don’t try to climb on each other’s shoulders and influence each oters like a bunch of chickens in a chicken factory? If all men are created equal, why then don’t they live equally? Why don’t they all die the same way then? Why don’t they think the same?

Where are the Indians today? Where are they gone? Where are the eagles? Where are the wolves, the buffaloes?
What happened to the whales? What will happen to the polar bears? What’s happening to our planet? Our only home? Where’s the bill? Is it self-evident that there’s a bill to pay for everything you consume, or is it not self-evident?

Very few things are self-evident in this world, Leonard. And very few people can really see the few ones that are self-evident.

Hi Marina, You are a feast for the eyes. I too am fascinated with philology and etymology. I had seen earlier that you recommended some books to read and I thought maybe I could recommend one for you. It is titled The Professor and the Madman. It’s a true story about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. Sounds boring right, not really, once you find out about Dr. Charles Minor. Anyway thought you might be interested.

I also have a word for you. [ copacetic ].

I didn’t post this on the HFW Forum “YouTube’s Most Popular Category (Now Official)” since it concerns alternative ways by which potential new subscribers might discover HFW.

HFW provides the digg submit icon, but listed below are other services similar to digg. Each service has its own “url encoding” for making a submission.

If needed, I can make a guess as to what the “url encoding” is for each site.

    Hi hs4mm,
Marina is on MySpace, but as the page says, she is never over there. http://www.myspace.com/hotforwords

Marina is also on Facebook and a lot of other places.

I’m not speaking for Marina, but my casual observation is that HotForWords is well covered in many outlets. HotForWords is covered daily by many different blogs and other video sites. At minimum, you can track who is linking to a HFW video by going to a HFW video and clicking the Statistics & Data button and looking at the top 5 links linking to the video.

Of course, Marina would be more qualified to speak about the details of her media exposure.

Phew! I was feeling bad and silly for creating this comment #54 thinking everyone else knew about it; hope I showed you something new!

That same thing happened to a friend of mine too.
And I asked him to delete his Browser Profile folder.

If you decide to do this also, read below:
You can find it, if you just do Start->Run->”%appdata%” (without the apostrophe). There you should be able to find your browser folder. If you back that up, you can then delete it, and your browser will reset to factory defaults.

That worked for my friend, but this isn’t a fun method, because you have to also back up your favorites, or you will loose them, along with all your saved accounts and passwords.

Another idea  I always thought you would be a good contestant on Dancing With The Stars. Perhaps, you could ease your way into it, or at least get some TV time, by submitting segments for the root definitions to common dance terms, such as:
    tango
    Look up tango at Dictionary.com
syncopated ballroom dance, 1913, from Argentine Sp. tango, originally the name of an African-American drum dance, probably from a Niger-Congo language (cf. Ibibio tamgu “to dance”). Phrase it takes two to tango was a song title from 1952.

I don’t think it is a Captcha. I think the shirt originally had a rose. Then people wrote their names in white and black ink pens. The top line looks like “Howard ~ Tiesthen Case L” in white ink; the L-word on her left in black is probable “Laura” with a horizontal-smile “: )” below it; the word in black to her right might be Steve. And it might be that the writing on the hat has been purposely smudged out.

How did Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken become a Colonel? Did he at one point “chicken out” of the army or what?

    My Guess: POXNORA

    So: IN POXNORA WE TRUST

How about the writing on the left back visible at :35 and :51 – “Xslance” (for excellence)?

Might the cap belong to player of Poxnora named Xslance?

  • neuroway

This is a very catchy, well verbalized and interesting question you raise here, Spinachman.

I would say he is one of these self-proclaimed autonomous colonels. I don’t know if he chickened out of the army or not, but one thing is absolutely sure: he IS the absolute master of his chickens. They belong to him, body and wings so to speak. From a chicken point of view, he is wayyy more than a colonel. And you don’t want to guess how he treats these poor little things down there in the Kentuky Fried chicken factories.

I have never gone to the most popular, or the most viewed page to see who’s there… except when linked, from here at the website, or stumbled across by a miss-click. I like the vids I like & the #s have no sway in my decision to view (speaking as a little more than a casual viewer with 33k+ views). Just checked on the “videos” button & it still defaults to “most viewed” for me & manually have to click on “popular”. It’ll be changing always & your advantage, Marina, is you do all your own stuff. It’s pretty consistant to your personal commitment to your calling. People know what to expect… just hit ‘em with enough surprises, that you don’t become predictable.
The copyright removals are sending a ripple of grief through a lot of blogs & websites that have, is it, “embedded” stuff. Have a confidence, Marina, that is bigger than the situation & you’ll be good I’m sure.
Clicking from here, really make much difference? I often do anyways.

I have a very limited knowledge of army grades (other than the pieces of the Stratego game), discipline, hierarchy and matters, but from what I can see, the order of Kentucky Colonels, although quite honourable, has nothing to do with the military. Thanks for the precisions, Chacha.

When I was in USAF and on K.P., I learned why they call it the messhall. When they got icecream in, they would not serve it to the troops, because it was “too good.” So they would leave it in the freezer, which when it was cleaned, would cause the icecream to soften. Then it would refreeze. After a sufficient number of these cycles, it was then satisfactorily lousy, and, in order not to waste it, it was served up as milkshakes. Lousy milkshakes. Got that?

Then some of us on K.P. would throw some carrots, peas or whatever into the milkshake for the fun of it, and that’s what the troops got. Any questions where mess comes from now?

Before Napoleon’s time MOST military officer ranks were bought, and you could be what ever rank you could afford. When wars were fought with men lined up on hillsides volleying at one another this wasn’t so critical. With the advent of artillery it became more important for some officers to actually know what they were doing; that is how Napoleon rose through the ranks, through education and knowledge. But to this day political pull will often do more than skill, unless there is a military action in progress. Many state maintained National Guards are still more politics than skill; the Kentucky Colonels are a classic example but not unique.

I’ve experienced many similar issues and I just ignored them for someone else will complain and problem will get fixed eventually. I even have email issues on YT for I read a message and it doesn’t clear out of my in box notifications. Hence I would rather have students email via the comment page and not YouTube.

The one subscriber issue I had was when I watched the video it would not clear out of the list. I would log back in the next day and all the videos that I watched would show back up. This even happen to me about 2 hours ago.

Going back to your issue. I too have that same problem. It’s not a new bug. I have had it on and off for sometime. It does take some amount of time for new videos to show up. Some days only about 15 minutes, while other days it would take about 12 to 48 hours to show up.

I’m sure YouTube programmers are well aware of the problems and are working tirelessly day and night fixing the problems. You can trust in YouTube that they are looking out for your best interest.

Oh, I forgot about the Warrant Officers. You left out Sergeant First Class.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

Commandant is a job tiltle, not a rank. The Commmandant of the Marine Corps is a (the) General (4 star). The Army does not have a Commandant, but they do have the General of the Army (title) who holds the rank of General (again, 4 star), similar to the Admiral of the Navy who has the rank of Admiral (4 star). The Navy also, occasionally uses the title Commodore, but that is usually a wartime billet to make a Captain (O6) a flag officer, so a Commodore is like an O6 1/2, but is considered Admiralty. To confuse matters even more, the Army has, in the past, resorted to a rank/title of 5 star General with the rank/title General of the Army.

BTW, enlisted and NCOs do not have any rank; they have rate. Only CWOs and Commissioned Officers have actual rank.

For some reason, in the U.S. Army, the rank of corporal was replaced by specialist 4. Or Spec 4 for short. I guess corporals seemed to think they had power or something, as mini-seargents. Another rank is Major. We had a Major in my outfit at Fort Carson, who sent my company out on a xcountry ski training mission just outside of Leadville, Colorado. We cross country skied down the length of a small mtn. valley to observe an outpost or some such by the light of the moon. As is usual for the high Rockies, the clouds came over the mtn. tops in no time, and we found ourselves skiing single file back to camp in a white out, where we could only see the back of the skis of the soldier in front of us. Our Captain finally got on the walkie talkie (circa 1971) and ordered the 1st Seargent to drive the Duece ‘n’ uh Half (2 1/2 ton truck) out to intercept the company and transport us back to camp before we lost men in the blizzard. We remembered that Major (I won’t mention his name Major Ware). A few weeks later, back at Fort Carson, the same Major had battalion CQ, which means he was in charge of the battalion during the evening, and he was walking around looking for soldiers to bust. Specialist McNathy was drunk and had to take a leak. He was on the 2nd floor of the barracks, and decided to pee off the balcony in the dark of night. And no other than our favorite Major was there underneath that balcony when the yellow rain gushered forth. He didn’t stop to bust McNathy for peeing on a Major (that has to be against some Army regulation or t’other) because of the humiliation he’d never live down. From then on, we called McNathy…..McNasty, in fond memory of his glorious revenge.

So far, I have not seen an explanation of why a major outranks a captain, but a lieutenant general outranks a major general. It is kinda interesting, so I will try that.

Originally, there were just three officer ranks. Captain, colonel and general. The ranks were based on political connections or how many troops you could raise, not military ability. So they would each have a professional officer (lieutenant) to serve under them and make the actual decisions. Captain:lieutenant::colonel:lieutenant colonel::general:lieutenant general
In turn, each of these lieutenants would have a sergeant major (servent) to actually execute the orders. Some of the words were dropped, but originally these were sergeant [major] [captain], [sergeant] major [colonel], and [sergeant] major general. So that is why a lieutenant general outranks a major general.

  • leonard

I like your answer, cherrybomb….rank this…This site is wonderfully fun. Oh, how they had it made(maid) in the old military.

  • slavik

    privet Marina…

i heard sergeant came from the french ser – meaning to tighten or keep together, and geant – meaning people. in the army, the sergeant is the highest ranking in the mobile units. then the lieutenant “holds the place” and the capitan is the “head of the regiment” – and they sit in a chair all day.

while on the topic, could i please ask you where the word [sapper] or [sappeur] came from (i’m not sure of the english spelling).

    i love the accent

Re: “I think he was being sarcastic.”

You may well be correct. And I was being gracious.

If he was baiting me, I wasn’t biting. I let that go, which didn’t cost me a thing, and haven’t given it a second thought. After all, it was my welcome page. In fact, the only one still thinking about it appears to be you.

I miss Chach, he was a lot of fun before Marina posed the “who will you vote for?” question (and, as you may recall, I said at the time that I thought it represented an error in judgment to ask such a question on a word etymology blog). Friends became enemies overnight. That was a sad thing to witness.

I lost a lot of respect for some people and almost left the site because it was no fun to read all the vitriolic spew. Prior to that, I had considered this blog a safe haven from the partisan madness.

Did they really think their jabs and pokes at their classmates would change anything? All it did was to prove how shallow and intolerant some can be toward others. Once that can of worms was opened, they couldn’t be put back in. What a waste of energy.

Too bad certain topics cause so much interpersonal conflict. IMHO, it eventually cost us one of our smartest TAs.

That’s why I don’t discuss my personal political beliefs or religion in an open forum like this. I’m not here to champion some cause, change anyone’s mind, or push an agenda. Just an Ohio boy here havin’ some fun with words, and trying to do my best to help keep the peace if I can, so I chose not to post a reply on the same page just so this conversation could remain more or less between us. Hope you don’t mind.

    Thanks for responding.
