Deeds and miracles attributed to Saint Nicholas…from wiki…”Another legend[citation needed] tells how a terrible famine struck the island and a malicious butcher lured three little children into his house, where he slaughtered and butchered them, placing their remains in a barrel to cure, planning to sell them off as ham. Saint Nicholas, visiting the region to care for the hungry, not only saw through the butcher’s horrific crime but also resurrected the three boys from the barrel by his prayers. Another version of this story, possibly formed around the eleventh century, claims that the butcher’s victims were instead three clerks who wished to stay the night. The man murdered them, and was advised by his wife to dispose of them by turning them into meat pies. The Saint saw through this and brought the men back to life.” A [new wave] of pigs in a deli…

Storing salted pork in a barrels, casks, kegs, etc., was a very common practice on tall ships. They go hand in hand. I don’t think there was ever a tall ship that set to sea without a pork barrel.
I did a quick google and found a copy of an old (scanned) article dating back in 1887 that describes a bit about this practice.”What sailors eat.” http://bit.ly/AKgZ2 I would suspect the practice existed much earlier. Maybe someone could investigate.

Yes. Any salt will work. You just need to create a brine. There are many kinds of salt. My favorite is sea salt from France. Not that Morton crap.
What salt does with the meat is it pulls the water out and the salt gets absorbed in. The salt does a good job of preserving (limiting the growth of bacteria, that wants to eat your dinner before you do) the meat for a period of time. There is an obvious problem with this method is you ingest a lot of salt, even after you soak the meat for hours to get the salt out.

I use video tape to store my videos on. Even with all this high technology today we don’t have a inexpensive, removable and reliable mass storage devices. You still can buy high end video equipment that uses video tapes. Flash drives are starting to become a bit more common but have a ways to go. I suspect in 2 years it will become a common form of video storage. The next High Def camcorder I get will have video tape storage. It’s the best solution for my needs.

Dear совершенная Марина Орлова, your hair looks great, and with you in that black dress, I’d be glad to go to a formal, “black tie” event with you. You dressed casually in earlier videos, so it’s nice to see you in in a great-looking formal dress.
In past centuries, pork barrels were very much needed. Pork was salted to preseve it, and it was tightly packed in wooden barrels which were sealed to protect the product. The barrels could bring food to distant locations without contamination.
The new $789 Billion “Economic Stimulus” Bill is packed with pork barrel spending, such as $1 Billion for new office buildings for NOAA, $100 Million for new offices for US Marshalls, $500 Million for NIH offices in Maryland, and more pork barrel spending will be known when copies of the Bill are available. :!:
Valentine’s Day will be here soon, so I watched the Valentine’s video you did last year. What a nice video! It was good because it was long (four and a half minutes) and you covered the subject so well and you added images, drawings, music and sound effects. In your video today, I think you are a happier person.

    Hello Marina,

I think a more pointed homework assignment would be to give examples of legislation that do not contain pork barrel spending.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/mikemx32 Capman911
  • orion_ss1

There are few ( if any ) examples of legislation that does NOT contain Pork Barrel spending. The current stimulus package must be read carefully ( by the politicians ) to ensure THEIR Pork hasn’t been cut before they vote for it. The stimulus package itself is a classic example of pork all by itself. We ( through our Legislative Branch ) are about to give BILLIONS of dollars to the people who ran the system into the ground.

Congress is having hearings berating the CEOs and boards, but in the end they will give them the money.

Before I would consider approving a penny I would set as a minimum condition that the sitting boards of all stimulus money step down ( without bonuses and / or severance pay ) and let new people in. It is not a sure thing that the new folks can clean the mess up, but its a dead certainty that the old folks CAN’T.

  • seesixcm6

“Slush” was the used cooking fat that was stored in barrels and sold to soapmakers when the ship came to a seaport. The “slush funds” were kept so the sailors could bribe the Customs officials. So there’s a perjorative to the term, “slush fund.” I didn’t know Marina did a lesson about it.

Everything on this list looks weird at first view for sure. But in my opinion, some of these expenses are justified.

I don’t think that money spent to teach students to watch TV is wasted. In my opinion, it’s important to teach people media literacy, which means to have a healthy skepticism towards what we see on TV or what we read on the internet. In many cases, the TV doesn’t tell you the whole story, may it be because of propaganda, because of bad journalism or because of lack of broadcasting time.

The $144,000 to see if pigeons follow human economic laws seem to me better spent than the millions to develop even more weird mathematical models for the economy that have never been verified in the real world, not even in the animal kingdom, before the current crisis broke out.

    Hi Marina,
There are old cartoons featured in newspapers and magazines from the past that satire these wasteful spendings. Such cartoons may show a big bellied aristocrat carrying a barrel full of cash, and sometimes it’s cash and chunks of smoked pork and other goodies that fall off the top of the full barrel as the aristocrat hauls the loot around, and since whatever falls off from the barrel isn’t going to be picked up it’s considered as “pork barrel”, waste or expenditure.

Or do you need leaders and babysitters to tell you what you should do and what you shouldn’t do all the time? How much you should spend, what you should eat, etc..? I agree that the person asking for credit IS primarily responsible.

My point is that as an investor in the bank ( losing money because the bank is making bad loans ) I would like to see bad credit risks paying higher interest because of the higher potential for default. I invest money to make money; if I wanted to lose money I’d go to Vegas and have a much better time.

The boards and CEOs have a job description that ( theoretically ) includes looking out for shareholders’ interests. I would argue they aren’t doing such a hot job, and there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of an option to get them to re-evaluate their priorities.

I feel like an idiot because I’ve actually been paying my mortgage and credit card bills.

Not everybody is willing to take a risk. To pop a wheelie. But the ones that do should pay the consequences and also get the rewards if any. When you’re on your own, that’s not too big of a problem. When people depend on you, it becomes another issue, as they become (perhaps unwillingly) risk takers too.

  • http://www.youtube.com/xxstokjrj1xx John

Marina, Pork may represent “fat” for rich people but it wasn’t “reserved” for “fat” people, it is usually a symptom of pork barrel spending. Usually the money allocated usually goes to rich people as these people are proven adapt at using money to stimulate economic growth in the local of their constituents, the people they supposedly represent. Its kind of a backhanded form of economic stimulus specific for the area they represent politically. Its not a perfect form of stimulus as the rich usually get richer (fatter) but these people are the people whom hire and pay the people to perform the activities these moneys were allocated to perform. Its not just money given to rich people as they have to show results for the pork their allocated. If you read some of these comments below their are many examples of pork barrel spending being pointed out especially some of maxpappys examples, although they sometimes sound ridiculous the people whom perform these activities are going to be feeding their family’s and paying their bills, thus stimulating their local economy’s. Usually these pork barrel spending provisions are targeted to areas of economic depression that are overlooked when only looking at the overall national economic picture.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/mikemx32 Capman911

Ask Bob I bet he could get it for you.

  • orion_ss1

Exactly my point; they are taking unwarranted risks with my investment money. Some credit worthy individuals may legitimately come up short and default unavoidably; THAT is the risks I expect banks to make with my money. The interestfrom those that do not default covers the ones that do and still provide a profit. Less credit worthy individuals will likely have a higher default rate, and thus pay higher interest to cover the added defaults.

Being politically correct and giving everyone MY rate is costing me, the banks, and apparently, the economy too much. Making unsecured loans maked it easy and even attractive to walk away from the debts.

    I think that is wrong.

I think giving these CEOs a second chance with my tax money as well as my investment money is darn near criminal.

    John,
Back in the old days, being fat was synonymous with being rich… that’s what I was pointing out. The term pork barrel spending, I believe, is meant to have a negative connotation.. not that some of the spending branded as “pork barrel” by opposition parties is not merited. And I agree with you, some of that spending DOES help everybody.. but then I think it wouldn’t be branded as pork barrel (except by the opposition party!).

Regarding “some of that spending does help everybody”: Consuming/Spending does not create wealth; production does. Printing money does not create wealth — wealth is actual goods and services created by individuals. The government does not produce anything — it taxes people and prints fake money. There is only destruction when the government takes money from some people and/or prints money and hands it over to others. To create wealth, people need to be left free to think, to judge, and to act — if they fail, they need to pay for their mistakes (not bailed out, not excused by filing bankruptcy etc.); if they win, they need to keep all that which they have earned.

“Being fat was synonymous with being rich” I am not disagreeing with you; you do realize this don’t you? Yes “Pork barrel” is suppose to have negative connotation especially if their the opposing political party. It’s Unfortunate one’s political party’s pork may well be the economic depression of the opposition party’s political constitutes.
Some times though these pork spending’s ARE just Pet Projects for one congress persons political cronies. Still that’s a reality of almost all forms of politics. The winners get rewarded and the losers get penalized, or at least not as well rewarded. Usually however though this spending does have a direct economic benefit somewhere just not where it can be seen by everyone; especially if it’s not in that persons immediate local.

Your question here “Was there really a barrel full of pork?” yes,(see CaptJack’s comments) except in the great depression the government use to ship salt pork by the boxcar loads to areas; hardest hit, when the people didn’t have money to feed themselves, according to a man I knew whom grew up in that time.

“if they fail, they need to pay for their mistakes (not bailed out, not excused by filing bankruptcy etc.); if they win, they need to keep all that which they have earned”.

Well Henry Ford went bankrupt about 4 times before becoming a successful automobile manufacturer.

While trying to manufacture automobiles i might add.

Is It Only In America that you should pay for your mistakes? What are your thoughts on this question, please exsplain.

  • hs4mm

    Consider:

    1) There are people who thought long and hard before taking any loans, then took loans that they afford, and are now working and saving diligently to pay off their loans. But there are also some people who took loans capriciously and purchased homes they could not properly afford; soon, these people defaulted on their loans. Such people need to pay for their mistakes. The government should not tax other people to help pay for the mistakes of those who lived beyond their means. The bankers who made loans without properly examining the ability of the borrowers to pay back should pay too — the government should not print fake money and/or tax others so that these incompetent bankers can continue with their jobs.

    2) When Ford failed, did the government bail him out? I don’t think so. Anyway, if he was bailed out, that was a bad thing. The fact that after four bail-outs he created a successful factory (I believe his key invention was the assembly line for mass production) would not justify any prior bail-outs.

    3) The key point is that the government does not own the money it uses in bail-outs. The government is not a producer — it does not create wealth — the government is properly a penniless thing. Any money the government gives out – it either stole from a producer by taxation or it created falsely by printing.

continued in 32.1.1.1.2 (if I gues the numbering scheme correctly)….

Every Investment firm I’ve ever visited has a statement which roughly states that investing is a risk. Have You been risking your money to make you money? key word “risk”

  • hs4mm

    continuing from in 32.1.1.1.1

    4) Regarding “Is It Only In America that you should pay for your mistakes?” It is reality, not society, that requires one to pay for ones mistakes — if someone thinks a stone is cake and eats it, he will fall sick; if someone thinks flapping his arms gives him wings and jumps out of a tall building, he will fall and die; if someone studies nature and figures out how to deal with it, he can build a plane; if someone wants to communicate with someone else far away, he can shout till his is hoarse and fail — or he can study nature and eventually invent wireless transmission of sound. And it is false ideas in society that enables one to get away with mistakes. If someone wants to smoke pot and destroy himself — that should be his right; but false ideas in society try to prevent such foolishness by making certain drugs illegal.

Has anyone noticed as th price of crude oil is falling, pump prices continue to hover at the $2/gallon mark? The oil companies have conspired to keep it at that price by cutting output at the refineries, which usually operate at 95%, down to only 79%.

“Consuming/Spending does not create wealth; production does” (create a million widgets that no one wants and see how much wealth you accumulate.)

    2) When Ford failed, did the government bail him out? I don’t think so.( This process is called Bankruptcy) Anyway, if he was bailed out,( He Was) that was a bad thing.( I can’t see how it’s a bad thing) The fact that after four bail-outs he created a successful factory (I believe his key invention was the assembly line for mass production) ( it was a key but not the entirety of his success after all the other company’s had to adapt it also to compete) would not justify any prior bail-outs. ( The laws (bankruptcy laws) of America say his prior bail-outs were justified so you have a poor argument here)

Ask those people whom worked for Ford in the great depression if his bailouts were justified or not I think they were.

    3) The key point is that the government does not own the money it uses in bail-outs. The government is not a producer — it does not create wealth — the government is properly a penniless thing. Any money the government gives out – it either stole from a producer by taxation or it created falsely by printing.

I am trying to see where a discussion of pork barrel spending has become a discussion of government bailout, two differing things, Besides its rightly called a econmic stimulus package.

Gas Prices are always higher in Florida. They like to milk the tourists. I paid 1.65 just north of Atlanta today. In the Sunshine state, you pay about 49.5 cents a gallon in taxes.
On average the oil companies survive on a 12% mark-up. So the government makes well more than twice the profit on a gallon than the oil companies do.

As politicians gain seniority in Congress, they acquire the power to stuff bills with pork. That’s one reason why I’m for term limits. Now, most pork projects are awarded to corporations, who in turn donate to politician’s campaign funds. The press isn’t helping. They don’t spend a dime investigating this pork game between the corporations and Congress. And when a story falls into their laps, the press does a sound bite treatment, like the bridge to nowhere. Actually, it was a bridge to an airport, and also would have enabled that Alaskan city to grow beyond it’s over-crowded boundaries. But no-ooooo…it became an icon of pork, “the bridge to nowhere”, due to the press unwillingness to hire reporters to investigate. For example, why doesn’t the press tell us what Congressmen are get pork and what those projects cost the taxpayers?

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Pork barrel spending refers to any unnecessary spending, even if it does not inure to the benefit of any particular person or group of persons. Sometimes it is done to make constituants believe “their man” is doing good for them in order to induce them to re-elect him. It’s stealing from Peter to bribe Paul.

With respect to body fat, it used to be that the rich were fat and the poor were thin, or at least it was understood that way, whether or not it was actually true. Now we know that, overall and ignoring other factors, it is the poor who are more likely to be obese, because they have a protein-poor, starchy diet. (Starches are much cheaper when directly consumed and more expensive when run through a cow.)

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Nothing wrong with that; it’s what makes it all work. Unfortunately we fail in the leveling and regulating tasks and pay the price for it. Live and learn.

Afterwards, I started thinking. “[Worth your while].” What kind of phrase is that? What does “while”‘s worth represent anyway? How can it be ‘worth a while”? What is someone’s “while”? Hmmm. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Perhaps HotForWords can investigate this mysterious phrase and its origin? Thank you. ;)

Or perhaps you can look at a dictionary to find out that a “while” is a period or interval of time… so “worth your while” is the same as “worth your time”… which is to say that meeting you some where over the weekend would be worth the time spent.

There are known risks ( for which due diligence is appropriate ) and there are hidden risks. As I said elsewhere some people with good credit may lose their jobs and be unavoidably unable to pay their loans. If the loan is secured by collateral ( a car or real estate for example ) the bank ( and its investors ) are protected to some extent.

Banks have been in a frenzy to compete on giving unsecured loans. They wrote loans for property without equity and ( big shock ) when the property values dropped below their equity value, the borrowers elected to walk away. The bank ( and its investors ) were unprotected. This is not a good way of doing business. I expect the bank and its employees to do business smarter and not take these risks.

More often than not, Pork Barrel spending occurs when politicians try to return favors to political supporters. Politicians receive donations from organizations, such as unions, who push for building projects… that will end up providing work for their members.

The projects are often part of a deal with a particular politician, who holds out voting for a specific bill unless they add the Pork item to the end of the bill… often totally unrelated to the specific bill in question. So, these ridiculous items become part of the overall cost, and thus we have the total financial chaos in our government spending today.

Previous Presidents have asked for the ability to have “line item” veto power: the ability to delete these pork items from worthwhile bills, but of course, congress is unwilling to allow this.

If we ever hope to get contol of the government budget again, we need to change this entire system.

    Outstanding

  • originalistrick

Crap! Doesn’t it suck to be having conversations about socialism in America and national security and financial chaos when we could be focusing on Valentine’s day, and sweeties, and Marina…?
    Life goes on, right?

  • neuroway

Nothing wrong with that? Live and learn? Serve your needs in the most efficient manners?

Sure thing, boss. Some coffee with that? Buffaloes are pretty cool most of the time, but you don’t want to go too far and really piss off one of them, because what originally started as a clownesque rodeo will probably end like a gory corrida.

  • originalistrick

    Great to hear from you!
Hope your birthday was fun, Smokey!

    Hello Marina!
    How about the word [raze]?
    Love the YouTube channel!

And the edit is gone! The comment URLs now have the page number imbedded in them, so you will probably have to include the page number in any link.

I think this is a case of three steps backwards and one step backwards.

I knew this was going to air but I was not to say anything about it until February. About a week ago Episode 13 of the Bachelor aired on TV. I wanted to watch it for (yours truly) I was on film. There is a part where the couple went out on a ferry ride to see Seattle. That’s the ferry just one dock away from my yacht. I also have worked for the company in the past and I still go for rides from time to time with the crew. During the filming I was pulling on some lines in a few shots. I’m not sure if any of my shots made the cut for the industry film many hours of footage just in case there are problems. If anyone see Episode 13 and seen me pulling on line on this ferry boat let me know! The captain running the ferry boat is a friend of mine and you will see him in a few scenes I’m sure. Once I get my hard drive issue solved I’ll try to upload a small behind the scenes of the ferry boat. I did some filming myself for a future project (hopeful) to hopefully get a hosting job on one of the Discovery channels. It was a busy November – January for me.
So if anyone seen me on the show or know where I can download the show so I can look for myself, please click on my screen name and it should take you to my contact page. Oh I was wearing a bright orange life jacket so I should be easy to spot, that’s if I’m even in the shot.

    Happy Valentine’s Day Marina!

Here are all of the smileys with the semi colon missing on the right side. If I added the semi colon you would have a regular yellow round smiley. So if you type one next to a sentence remember that semi colons have to be on both sides of the words. This is if the smileys are missing again.

I am reading this about 6 months after you wrote it.

These ae indeed agregious examples that go on all the time for wasting taxpayer money.

What struck me after just having watched the lesson, was the idea that pork–barrel USED TO BE solely a payback to rich contibutors or buddies of the politicians, and the amounts listed here are a large accumulation of ‘chicken feed’ sized payments to perhaps do payback on the local level fo the buddies of the local guys [lining up at the trough].

Many also seem pork-barrel to keep unfunded folks in academia into jobs that the public sector would never fund with private $.

Then we gotta start looking at the REAL MONEY like 700 Billion to bail out bankers and Wall Street Crooks for bad decisions, and another 64 Billion to keep GM’s bad decisions from hitting bankruptcy court – and on and on.

Another $2 Billion is being loaned to George Soros’ latest investment in a Bazilian Oil Company as I heard today.

It’s equal opportunity payoffs to every Lackey or Puppet Master – large or small who helped the ‘winning team’ win — at public expense.

And each party accuses the other of being corrupt!

And they are BOTH right! YIKES!  :???:
