Now, about this most popular thing

Marina, your GTW game i on page 3 at the moment.

Most popular are videos usually by partners that youtube chooses that have lots and lots of honours. Now, also most popular shows what is going on in the news or on tv. Right now its WWF and some home and away clips (home and away is always on there) but bet your boots, when it comes to the grammies that all the clips will be most popular. Same with anything like current news. Most popular seems to be YT’s way of promoting the press that makes them money and throwing in a few extra videos to put you off the trail. I think most popular is a way to make youtube money. If it’s a “secret” algorithm then that means that they are not telling is something. Something dirty is probably going on.

I’m not much of a music listener any more. When my wife is at home there is always Thai pop music on, some of it quite pleasant but some is dire, so when I’m on my own I prefer silence if there is no birdsong.

    .

Not my favorite, but the best singer ever is Patsy Cline — she sings very sad songs. Her songs are so sad that I cannot enjoy them in any way other than for her artistry in singing them. (This is like saying Dostoevsky is an excellent story teller, but one would not want to live in the word he depicts; one can enjoy his artistry but not want to live in his world. I have read his Crime and Punishment.)

Best song and dance combination ever: Shakira in Hips Don’t Lie and in Whenever, Wherever.

    Hi hs4mm,
I like Shakira – Ojos Asi

This version requires extra oxygen and heart medication.
    Ojos Asi /w dance compilation.

  • hs4mm

    .

Reverse origin request — what modern words have their roots in the ancient word of …?:

Reverse origin request for the ancient Greek words of [aidos - meaning modesty or bashfulness (in the good sense of keeping a treasured value for a select few only -- away from indiscriminate or promiscuous display to everybody); also meaning reverence, experience of awe; it is the _opposite_ of aiskhyne meaning hiding out of shame or disgrace]. Also, reverse origin of the related word [aidoia meaning genitals (both male and female)]. At the time the Greeks used the words aidos and aidoia, they considered the genitals a value (unlike Christians who consider it a shameful organ of sin).

I love that song!! I think I will have to click that link!

  • hs4mm

    .

In Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever, Shakira is expressing a woman’s love for her man. It is sad that her English (lyrics) is poor. The choreography — the music, what one can make out of the lyrics, and the movement of her body to the music and to the thoughts being expressed by the lyrics are eloquent.

Those two music-videos by Shakira are cohesive, meaningful objects of high grade art (but the dance compilation by libysin is just a meaningless hodge-podge — it is so boring that I could not see it fully.)

this is probably my favourite song at the moment. I think missys songs are really awful but there is something about them that makes them brilliant. I also LOVE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiCMFd2XXT0 Infact I have always loved it… Its my Favourite song….

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Father0fTears fatheroftears

There was a “Wheel Of Fortune” show back in the 90′s where the winner went to guess the word for the grand prize. The word was………”Ukulele”. If I remember, the winner chose the usual “R, S, T, L & E”. Well the word “_ _ _ lele” was shown. It may have been even just the two “E” vowels. Long time ago! Anyway, the woman guessed it correctly!!!!

    .

Just realized that there are multiple versions of Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever. So here are the versions I am refering to: Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever.

Also, I would like to qualify my remark made in 30.1.2 about “high grade art”: Both these videos show what is possible in a song-and-dance video — they do not fully achieve it. It is only parts of the videos that are good and demonstrate the potential. Hips Don’t Lie has a few good parts; Whenever, Wherever has more good parts.

(The primitive drum beat in Ojos Asi gives me a headache.)

I think you should hand out The Gorby Awards, Marina. I have no idea who would receive them. All the singers are probably guilty of something in their professional writings and performances.

Also, could you let us know where you will be on Valentine’s Day? A certain lovely young lady needs the roses on her bed table to return. M-a-a-aybe someone she knows could take care of that for her?

    Just a thought.

Capman here is some trivia I found in the Old Farmer’s Almanac:

Why did old-time fire trucks have dogs (usually dalmatians) on board? Were the dogs just mascots, or did they serve some purpose?
    Answer:

Originally, dogs ran in front of horse-drawn steam engines, barking loudly to alert pedestrians and vehicles so the fire wagon could pass unhindered. Dalmatians were fit and loyal enough for this work, and they got along well with the horses. With the advent of gasoline-powered fire engines, the dalmatians weren’t really needed any longer, but they became a kid-friendly symbol of the honorable profession of fire fighting.

 I never watch awards programs (this one may be an exception because of you, Marina). And I have such a wide range of musical tastes that it’s very hard to think of one favorite. Sarah Brightman has an amazing voice. But sometimes I feel like hearing Carrie Underwood. Nobody did Christmas tunes like Bing Crosby. There are so many good singers, the real choice is the type of music.

“(unlike Christians who consider it a shameful organ of sin)”

Wait, since when is reproduction a sin?
Christianity (that includes me) considers sex a sin?
I have no reason to be ashamed of my genitalia. And that doesn’t mean that I use my “shameful” to commit a sin.
I researched it just in case, and found there’s no shame or sin in the body, created by God himself, according to Christians and the Bible.

So if that statement didn’t have any foundation in documents, it must have been a personal addition. And if that’s your view, then that would make you a serial sinner, or maybe a virgin. What do you think the Christians would consider worse? :-)
(I ask only because you like so much speaking on their behalf)

Please note that I addressed this issue elegantly, and even kept my humor up. Unlike you, when you decided it was OK to belittle my intelligence, as well as my teacher’s. (and these are people with Doctorates we’re talking about)
I didn’t bring this up again to fight with you, but merely because I felt it needed to be addressed, in order to bury the hatchet between us (because yes, people make mistakes, now you know first hand), and eliminate the funky feeling that is so unnecessary to any of us, while interacting on this site. I hope that idea appeals to you, as much as it does to me.

If you get a chance Marina, go see “Marina Poplavskaya”, she is in LA in May & early June, in the production of La Traviata . I hated Opera when I was younger… until I saw a prodution of this opera, with Canadian soprano Teresa Stratas singing (acting) the part of “Violetta”… By the end I was sobbing and it did surprise the heck out of me for more than a couple of reasons.
If you’re scared to go alone… take “PK” along with you… and, umm… make him pay for the tickets. It’d be good for him as well… be a life changing experience for sure.
BTW looks like Teresa Stratas was in a couple of Grammy winners in the 80′s… & also went to Calcutta, worked with Mother Teresa, caring for the dying kids at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalighat_Home_for_the_Dying & later going to Romania to wash cots & again care for the sick & dying orpans… Oh wiki…

My fav singer is Patty Loveless. Aretha Franklin comes in at a solid # 2. Bill Medley @ no. 3. Mary Travis has to be mentioned, even though I can’t hack folk music anymore, not since the ’60′s.
Pink has a great blues voice, and I wish she’d lean harder in that direction. Billy Holiday was great. Bob Marley had a great voice. I almost forgot Dusty Springfield.

What about the word [Lunch]? Seems like it shoved the term [dinner] ahead a few hours, and then [dinner] inched out [supper] for the name of the evening meal.

My initial reaction to that question was, “I haven’t a clew* “, but on investigation I doubt it.
This site mentions that “an 8-yard kilt will accommodate up to a 46″ hip/seat measurement. If you’re over that, you’ll need more fabric.”, so to go the whole 9 yards would mean being overly generous indeed.
As The Phrase Finder points out, ‘no one is 100% sure of the origin’, and there are probably as many theories as there are people who have pondered the question.
However, the first documented use of the phrase seems to have happened after the early 1960s:-

What I am sure of is that the phrase wasn’t in wide circulation before 1961 – which tends to rule out many of the suggested sources. Why? In May 1961, the American athlete Ralph Boston broke the world long jump record with a jump of 27 feet 1/2 inch. No one had previously jumped 27 feet. This was big news at the time and widely reported. Surely the feat cried out for this headline?:

“Boston goes the whole nine yards”

And yet, not a single journalist worldwide came up with that line, which is missing from all newspaper archives. The phrase may have been coined before 1961, but it certainly wasn’t then known to that most slang-aware of groups – newspaper journalists.

Proof that Intelligence is Sexy based on the history of sculpture:

At one time, the Greeks used to think that women were not fit for dealing with reality and so considered them unimportant — this view led them to depict women shabbily in sculptures (see Kore from the Acropolis, stone, h: 0.51 m, c. 480 B.C. (Acropolis Museum, Athens) . Then, some women started demonstrating their intellect in Greek day to day life. After the Greeks saw women as intellectual beings, they started depicting women in sculpture as exquisitely beautiful and valued beings on earth (see Aphrodite of Cyrene (Venus Anadyomene), copy of original 3rd – 2nd cent. B.C., marble, h: just under life-size, c. 1st cent. B.C. (Terme Museum, Rome)).

I have many favorites… Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt, Nancy Wilson. What I don’t like are the females with barely-audible, breathy voices that require amplification; a good singer should be able to cut steel with her voice like N.W.

Did you notice some defects in the defects? The record click and pop sounds superimposed over the audio were not consistant groove-to-groove. There would be one click per revolution, followed by two clicks and back to one click. Real scratches have the same number of clicks per rev, at least until you advance to a different part of the record. Also, in the Ukelele vid, there are white lines and black lines. The white lines are scratches made from the many playings of a positive (that which the viewer sees in a theather). Black lines would be scratches in the original negative, which, while theoretically possible, would not normally occur, because the original negative is not normally run through a machine repeatedly, and, even if it was, it would be in the dust-free environment of a photo lab where scratches would be unlikely. I guess the effects fakers didn’t stop to think.

Stores (and those who work there or invest in them) have to make a living, too. You can’t blame them for competing with the competition. It is up to the government to limit the time frame (if that is constitutionally possible).

I think there should be no Christmas stuff until at least after Thanksgiving Day, preferably Dec. first. I wouldn’t object to advertising before then as long as there was no Christmas music or theme to it. Surely they are clever enough to do that.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

That reminds me of one of our family’s Kodak moments. When I was of kindergarten age, we lived temporarily in some barracks at Enid AFB, OK (until we could find off-base housing) and ate at the chow hall. On Thanksgiving Day, we and the other families were standing in front of the chow hall doors waiting for them to open up. My sister, two years younger, grew impatient and blurted out, “Open the door, toopid!” Everyone laughed, because that is what we all were thinking.

Here’s a little joke for you.

A man walks into a bar and sits down at the counter and asks for a beer. The bar keep sees that the man is sad so he asks him if he could help him. The man says that he got fired from his job so he came up north to see if he could find another job. The bar keep asked him what did he do before. The man said he was a dog catcher in a very small town in Georgia. The bar keep asked him if he messed up on the job or did the job just run out of money.
The man said no he was fired because he caught the dog.

  • andromeda

There was a Victrola player (like the one in the classic picture with the cute little dog looking curiously at the horn) in the upper attic of the old farmhouse I grew up in. It still worked. The sound I recall very tinny. Mind blow : in less than 100 years technology advances from Victrolas to CD/DVD/Blue Ray players. However, 100 years from now the chance of a CD/DVD/Etc. player from today still working = 0! The progress of technology….

Music tastes : eclectic, mutable with time/mood/temperature/phase of moon, no standout favorites. Liked the beat in Eminem, Lose Yourself. Like EJ and Levon, Rocket Man. McCartney smooth vocalist in almost everything : Live and Let Die. Tyler and Dream On. The cat who sang Dream Weaver. Stevie Nicks. Kenny Rogers. All great.

The attic exists no more as the whole house was renovated … torn down to foundation and built back up long ago. I am not sure what happened to the Victrola but I hope it survived in some way and is gracing someone’s living quarters as a quaint remembrance of times gone past (kind of eerie listing to it play music from back then on records from back then, like the music is time tripping into the future via the wonders of the magical Victrola time machine). Lot of cobwebs in the way of my picture memory from back then but I think it had the little-dog- looking-at-horn emblem on it, it was the “real mccoy”.

Chemikal, my friend, I am going to argue one point with you. I, too, am Christian, so I feel an especiallly strong need to point out my alternative view. Please remeber that I would not argue this point with you unless I felt that you would take it as I mean it – an alternative view.

I completely understand your defense of Christianity. I actually agree with you on that point. My exception, though, is with your defense of Christians. I do know of many Christians who find shame (even disgust) with the human body. I do not agree with their argument, but I seldom take the time to disagree with most of them – for what benefit would that achieve? Many Christians have some beliefs that are very different from mine; to the point that, for a long time, I tried to call myself something other than Christian, for fear of being associated with these others’ beliefs. I changed my mind upon Jesus’ example: He had quite a few exceptions with the way Judaism was being practiced, but He still used the term Jew to apply to Himself.

When I model my behavior, I try to keep one thing in mind: I do not model my behavior after Christians; I try to model my behavior after Jesus. I am grateful of the name “Christian,” because of Christ, not because of (perhaps with exception to) others who also call themselves Christians.

Peace to you, my friend.

When you said “I do know of many Christians who find shame (even disgust) with the human body.”, that got me thinking… the only passage from the Bible, that I know of to suggest a hateful attitude towards one’s self would be:

Matt 5:28-29 (NIV) [Jesus:] “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
So if you said that those people hated their entire body, than think of what must be in their mind! :-)

But when it comes down to it, every man chooses his Faith, and he can either follow one of the canonical religions, or he can interpret for himself the good things Jesus did on Earth a long time ago, and try to adapt His teachings to contemporary reality. I think that Faith does not consist in choosing a “right” religion, but rather it mirrors each man’s belief and will to pursue a Holy life.

    Those are just my thoughts.
With peace in mind, and peace at heart, your friend,
    Chemikal

One of our horses had a colt which was named “Nipper” because it had a tendency to sneak up on you and chomp you one on your arm or shoulder or back if you were not looking. Nippy fiery tempered little thing she was!

Why is zakolka called bobby pin? Was there some hippie Bobby who liked to wear them? Please enlighten me if you succeed investigating. Hope it wasn’t Bobby ; )

I’m still using the official coroner’s report photo they shot when I was first “discovered.” You should see me now!

Beneath the logo it reads, “His master’s voice.”

That would be Radio Company of America (RCA) unless I miss my guess. Cool. I have a bunch of old 78 rpm platters but no Victrola on which to spin ‘em. My turntable only does 33&1/3 or 45 rpms. Dang!

BTW, Dream Weaver was sung by Gary Wright. A one-hit wonder if’n I ever did see one! Green-Eyed Lady by Sugarloaf is another classic one-hit wonder. Man, they were great!

Rocket Man is my favorite of all Sir Elton’s works.

 I’m very happy to see Robert Plant and Alison Krauss do a sweep on the grammy wins. It just goes to show that grammy officials took into consideration those people who may not always choose to listen to music on ipods and that’s a big thumbs up for music lovers :!:

    Man, I couldn’t agree more!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

The rythm was synchopated, meaning the emphasis was not the traditional 1 2 3 4, but had some accent on the 2 and 4 beats. Even further, much of the emphasis was between beats, giving the rythm a “ragged” sound. This type of rythm was later one of the defining features of rock n roll. Rock, typically has a more pronounced back-beat (2 and 4) with some synchopation, while ragtime was especially synchopated with some back-beat (but they did not use that term.)

Hey, Sparky, Marina did a video on Valentines’ Day last year in which she said that the day is named from a Roman Saint named Valentine.
However, what she didn’t do in that video is to say where the name Valentine came from or how many Saints had the name.

Since watching the Grammys, I have a new favourite singer.

  • http://www.xomba.com/user/mythman mythman

Oh Highly-Hot Heatful One, I beg mercy for the lateness of my reply!

My favorite singer changes often. Most-recently it’s Natasha Bedingfield, but before it’s been George Jones, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Cledus T. Judd, “Weird” Al, Michael Crawford, Sting … and usually me (though I’m sure you could fit into that list too!)
