Marina, that was a great interview. It was interesting to read your answers in German considering that they were translated from the interview being done in English.

In the interview Marina talked about the origins of the word Ponzi Scheme regarding the video she did recently. She mentions that she only speaks Russian and English, but that she studied Latin and Greek. Marina also mentioned her book that will be coming out soon this year.

  • gio74

Ok, after all I translated it all and I just sent it to Marina!

    Hey Marina,

Loved the interview. “So sexy kann Philologie sein” hardly needs translation. You’re so modest, saying in perfect German that you only speak Russian and English!

    ***WORD REQUEST: [Sprachwissenwissenschaft]***
Also, [Vollzeitjob]. Does [Ich verdiene genug Geld damit] mean “I’m not making enough money, dammit!” :?:

Does [welchem Wort] mean geiriau Cymraeg?

Can’t wait for the translation, Marina! I hardly know any German myself and the only help at my disposal right now are some old vocab cards my late uncle used when he was stationed over there many years ago. Oh, and as always your photograph was devastatingly SEXY

Languages and their studies are great – that is why I love word origins, etc.

It never occured to me that “damit” (I earn enough money with it (damit)- could read to a foreign (not German) ear “dammit”.

You are curious and that is a “good thing”!

vollzeitjob = full time job and I guess the Germans took the word JOB into the German language as so many others- because job means really Arbeit!

    Philology can be so sexily

Internet fame Marina Orlova explain via YouTube the origins of words – an interview

    The subject

Every week up to five million users click her videos on YouTube. She is blond, she deeply carries décolleté clothes – and she is a studied philologist: Marina Orlova.
On the Internet the Russian by birth is a true fame. About her YouTube channel „HotForWords ” the 28-year-old charmingly and provocative explains the origin of everyday concepts. „Sexiest Philologist in the world ” headlined recently „New York Times magazines “. Brains and curves – this is her recipe for success.

Mrs. Orlova, you explain origins of words via YouTube videos. How have you had the idea?

ORLOVA: I had informed once a class in linguistics, about 20 pupils. This was still in Russia. When a known YouTube pointed me, however, I thought: Hey, instead of 20 people I can inform thousands. I would never have thought that these become once 150 millions.

But let’s face it: What has driven you, actually? Wanted you to become famous or spread knowledge?

ORLOVA: I wanted to and want to inform so many people as possible. I am simply convinced of the fact that the etymology – the science of the word origins – can fascinate many. People only have to get to know. For most youngsters whom I knew it was OK to be uneducated. And instead of learning, they celebrated day and by night. I want to motivate learning. So that the youthful have desire to switch their brains on again. The brain is like a muscle: If you do not coach it, it atrophies. Use your brain, then suddenly ignites something: Then we will know more and more.

“If in the video a sexily woman is shown who gives lessons, then the youngsters keep. ”

You invented a very unconventional way of student motivation. In view of your outfits doubts arise whether it is for your audience superficially about knowledge…

ORLOVA: Well if I only offered to the users to look at videos with explanations of word origins, they would presumably defend themselves: „For God’s sake! ” Or in such a way. Word origins – this sounds dull per se. However, in the video a sexily woman is shown who gives lessons wittily and rather jocularly, then the youngsters keep. Bit by bit the words seep in her brain, and already you have learnt something even without having noted it. I do exactly this.

On which word have you worked last?

MARINA ORLOVA: Last I have explained the concept „Ponzi scheme”. After the American investor Bernard Madoff had put 50 milliard dollars in the sand, I was asked for the origin of the concept. Charles Ponzi had lost in 1920 with the sales of post loans 100 million dollars, since then there is the Ponzi scheme.

Poster of you, fan article, regular Merchandising: Do you earn enough with the videos and and the trappings?

ORLOVA: YouTube is meanwhile a full-time job. I earn enough money with it. Now I dedicate my whole time to the videos and the marketing. I have used a year, before the project has been worthwhile. At that time I have produced daily videos. Now I can afford a relatively comfortable life.

How many languages do you control?

ORLOVA: Only Russian and English, but I have also studied Latin and Greek.

Do you not want to use your knowledge sometime also differently than for YouTube?

ORLOVA: I already do this. I have just written a book about etymology, it appears in some months. In addition, I work on a computer game. But I simply love it to do videos. And, in the end, from three to five millions people watch me every week. This is not bad, or?

Yes, indeed. And so now a technical question: The association German has chosen the concept „X-Mas ” recently the most superfluous and most irritating word of the year. Into German the word is a loan from English. Tell us something about its origins.

ORLOVA: X-Mas is an abbreviation for the English Christmas. It is used during the last years often for reasons of the political correctness. Not to kick the people who do not celebrate the Christian Christmas, with felicitations on the feet. Today, indeed, the concept is used inflationarily. But one should know that there was him already 500 years ago. In the Greek begins the word Christian with X. Already the old Greeks used X as an abbreviation for Christian.

    Philology can be that sexy

Internet celebrity Marina Orlova explains the origin of words via Youtube – an interview

    The topic

Every week up to 5 million users click her videos in Youtube. She is blonde, she is dressed with wide decollete – and she is an educated philologist: Marina Orlova.
The Russian born is a true celebrity in internet. With her Youtube channel the 28-years-old explains the origin of everyday life words in a charming and exciting way.
“The sexiest philologist in the world” was a recent title of the “New York magazine”. Brain and curves – that’s her recipe to success.

    By Kira Frenk

Q: Miss Orlova, you explain the words’ origin via Youtube videos. How did you come to that idea?

ORLOVA: I gave once a class in linguistics, to some 20 students. That was back in Russia. When a mate showed me Youtube, I thought: “Hey, instead of 20 people I can teach to thousands. I’d have never thought that they would become 150 millions.

Q: But honestly: what did drive you really? Did you want to become rich or to spread knowledge?

ORLOVA: I wanted, and want, to teach to as many people as possible. I am just convinced that etimology – i.e. the science about the words’ origin – can fascinate a lot of people. One has just to introduce people to that.
For most young people I knew, it was just ok to be non-educated. And instead of learning, they would move from party to party all day all night. I’d like to motivate to learn. In order to get the young willing to switch on their brain. The brain is like a muscle: if you do not train it, it deteriorates. Use your brain, then something ignites suddenly: then you want to know more and more.

Q: Well, then you have thought of a rather unconventional way to motivate students. Considering your outfits, one doubts whether your audience is interested primarily in knowledge…

ORLOVA: Well, if I had proposed to the viewers just to attend videos with the explanation of words, they would likely react like “For God’s sake!” or so. Origin of words – that sounds boring as such. But if you show a sexy woman in the video, who gives funny and entertaining lessons, then the young people stay tuned. Slowly the words seep into their brain, and there it is: they have learned something, without even noticing it. I am doing just that.

Q: What work did you work on recently?

ORLOVA: Lately I explained the concept of the “Ponzi scheme”. Since the American investor Bernard Madoff had thrown 50 billion dollars in the sand, I was asked about the origin oh that concept. Charles Ponzi had lost 100 billion dollars in 1920 by selling post loans. Since then there is the Ponzi scheme.

Q: Poster of yours, fan articles, a proper merchandising: do you earn enough with the videos and the rest?

ORLOVA: Youtube is meanwhile a full time job. I earn enough money with it. Now I spend all of my time for the videos and the marketing. It took me one year, before the project paid off. At the time I produced videos daily. Now I can afford a rather comfortable life.

Q: How many languages do you master?

ORLOVA: Only Russian and English, but I have studied Latin and Greek as well.

Q: Do you plan to use your knowledge for something different from Youtube in some future?

ORLOVA: I do that already. I have just written a book about etimology, it is going to appear in a few months. Besides I am working at a computer game. But I simply love it. To make videos. And after all, I am viewed by three to five million people every week. Not bad, is it?

Q: Definitely. And therefore now a topical question: the association “Deutsche Sprache” (German language) chose the concept “X-mas” as the most redundant and the most annoying word of the century. In German the word is loaned from English. Please explain something about ist origin.

ORLOVA: X-Mas is short for the English Christmas. It has been used often over the last years due to politically correctness. Not to irritate people that do not celebrate the christian Christmas when exchanging wishes. The concept is being, in fact, abused. But one should know that it existed already 500 years ago. In Greek the word Christ begins with X. Already the ancient Greeks used the X as short for Christ.
