I think CK got robbed. I know he did not post first, but he gave a detailed answer. Mebbe that is the teacher in me, you know “show your work.” P’raps he could get an honorable mention or something.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com Marina

I actually said I would be picking random winners and I will be.. this time I just went with the first correct answer I saw.. but in the future I will be picking random winners that way people keep playing.
CK did give a nice explanation.

no bueno. I am more of a checkers kind of guy. I do have a nifty pewter Civil War set, and my Dad left me a set from India made with Ivory pieces. It’s a shame I never use them, but they do look good sittin’ in my study.

I dunno what they get, but I wanna win just once, so I can ask for a signed OED. Even better would be if M Lady M would sign her used copy for me, then she could get a spiffy new one.

That has got to be a beautiful Chess set. I wouldn’t use it either as it is probably worth quit a bit to a collector and especially to you as it came from your Dad. I would always hang on to that to pass on to your children.

Hello my dear teacher, Marina. I have another word, or rather phrase origin request. I get salty when people misuse the phrase “a lot” as “alot”. Please clear up this common mistake. Thanks Marina. I promise I will never look back after you clear this up.

I looked back through the comments and Chemikal was the first to make the correct answer. Two others added on to his comment which makes them look like they were first. If Marina had used the hat system then he may or may not would have been picked, it could have been anyone. But she was honest and forthright enough to tell us how she chose the winners and how she is going to correct the problem. Maybe next week I hope you will be the winner. Hi Mike,
I’m gonna pull a PK on you: Chemikal first posted at 8:18 (“Interesting…), but added his answer and research at 9:46. In between, liquidcross posted the answer “Curfew?” at 8:48. So in my eyes, they’re both winners.

  • neuroway

    Couvre-feu. Interesting lesson.

Reminds me of a legend about a very old curfew. But in that case the fire is not really covered. Instead, it lies prostrated, kneeling down like a wounded beast, chained to ice by a strong link of irrationality. It’s the legend of two twin great volcanoes, one sleeping and the other active, the Ixtaccihuatl and the Popocatépetl.

    Iztaccihuatl,
Here she sleeps, all white, all inert,
challenging the centuries and the mountains,
exposing her silhouette to the open skies,
like an eternal symbol. The symbol of death.

    Popocatepetl,
Yes, immortal warrior, here she lies,
as white and frozen as ice.
In vain you torture your brain,
asking the gods to wake her up.
Here you will end, prostrated like a wounded beast.
Here you will drink the nostalgy of your dead one.

No one listens to your pledge,
    even the gods don’t listen.
They don’t see that you’re crying tears of fire,
    painfully arguing with the infinite.

    Legend of the volcanoes

I wanted to say hello, and share my great enjoyment of your work. I only recently discovered it, and wanted to suggest that you examine the word “bank.” I haven’t been able to trace it to it’s origin myself (at least not with any finality), and think it is a common enough word that many of your viewers might be as interested as I am.

Additionally, I was viewing an older video concerning the phrase “balls to the walls” and noted that my own solution to the origin of the phrase was not represented, and predates those proffered in the video and comments so far as I can determine. What I found was that it refers to cannon bearing ships in wartime, who would call “balls to the walls” when firing at ships on both sides of them. The cannon “balls” would be removed from storage along the keel of the ship (where the weight was best kept) and brought to the gunne wales [gunwale/gunnel in modern use] on both sides of the ship. Normally the call would be “balls starboard,” “balls fore,” etc. the munitions brought to the guns that would need reloading. In this case, if I am correct, the term means fighting a battle against two to one odds while surrounded, a situation which most likely involves charging between two ships of an opposing force. This is a risky move, but one which allowed the vessel to make an all out attack with every gun it had.

Please do double check my work though, I have been known to miss things on occasion.

It was on the thirteenth day of the thirteenth month of the thirteenth year that the Roman emperor Stubusus got up in the middle of the night to use the convenience and hit his toe on the nightstand. The toe became infected and he died two weeks later. This is where stubbing one’s toe originated and why 13 is unlucky.

    It’s true, I tell you.

Marina, I don’t know if you saw my comment to runnawayscott about not letting people see other’s answers before they leave their own.
If you are going to pick random winners, the possibility exists of getting a prize without earning the merit, by cribbing someone else’s answer.
I don’t know if my suggestion is possible with the software that you use – if not, maybe it will prompt another more practical solution.

There is a lot of overlap between nautical terms and aviation terms. ‘Pilot’ is a nautical term.

When aviation was in its infancy ( its just a little over 100 years old ) the terms and safety were largely derived from nautical lore. Aircraft anti collision lights conform with rules of the nautical road, and a few rules of the road specifically cover aircraft operations.

Also one should consider that the Navy has more aircraft than the Air Force, and during World War II the Army had more ships than the Navy.

This is something to think about when negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade. So remember this story the next time someone who knows nothing, and cares less, tries to make your life miserable.
    Negative People.

A woman was at her hairdresser’s getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded:

“Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It’s crowded and dirty. You’re crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?”

“We’re taking Continental,” was the reply! . “We got a great rate!”

“Continental?” exclaimed the hairdresser. ” That’s a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and they’re always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?”

“We’ll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome’s Tiber River called Teste.”

“Don’t go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks its gonna be something special and exclusive, but it’s really a dump, the worst hotel in the city! The rooms are small, the service is surly, and they’re overpriced.

So, whatcha’ doing when you get there?”

“We’re going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the Pope.”

“That’s rich,” laughed the hairdresser. “You and a million other people trying to see him. He’ll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You’re going to need it.”

A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.

“It was wonderful,” explained the woman, “not only were we on time in one of Continental’s brand new planes, but it was over booked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot.

And the hotel was great! They’d just finished a $5 million remodeling job, and now it’s a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were over booked, so they apologized and gave us their owner’s suite at no extra charge!”

“Well,” muttered the hairdresser, “That’s all well and good, but I know you didn’t get to see the Pope.”

“Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I’d be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.

Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me.”

“Oh, really! What’d he say ?”

He said: “Where’d you get the shitty hairdo?”

    Congratulations to the winners!

Like Warren said below, Marina, these GTW games are tougher and really make one think. I love these games. Very challenging and very clever clues. I love it.

Short of a software submittal for answers like Bob suggested, the random selection of the person with the correct answer is perfect.

Even though it is tempting to reveal how one arrived at the answer, spoiling it for the rest of us slowpokes, I guess that can also be used to mislead. Look how many picked the incorrect answer “pander” in GTW Game XI. I went off on my own tangent and still got it wrong.

CK, CampKohler? Sure, everyone did better than me!
    :-)
I’m just kidding… I’m not at all afflicted about not winning any prize.
Besides, there’s nothing you could give me, that would be more valuable than what you have already given me. That is a wider view on things, a firmer grasp of the English language, and believe it or not, you helped me become a little more wiser and more intelligent person.( but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to win next week! :D )
Also, thanks to all my friends who thought my explanation was OK. :-)
One thing is still foggy though. Why did you show a picture of hanging women? Was it coincidental, or was it meant to be another clue?
By the way, in case you are interested, I passed my exam with close to max score, how lucky is that huh? Next one is on Friday, wish me luck. (no pressure, I mean you don’t have to, I’m not that emotionally needy you know) – man am I being waggish today! :D

Why does JUDO mean gentleness art in Japanese?

I practiced Judo for 2 years, and I can tell you, falling down and wiping the floor with your opponent is not very gentle in nature!
I can think of other things that are way more gentler than Judo, but I see they decided to name this sport “gentleness art” nonetheless.

T’ai Chi Ch’uan (Taijiquan) shortened to Tai Chi (Taiji) should mean “extreme limit”, from the Chinese “tai”=extreme and “ji”=limit.

    CONFESSION:

I wrote the above note to test if Marina has reviewed the link I sent her to Gavin de Becker’s recommendations to celebrities on how to handle deranged and obsessive fans. The jist of it was to ignore these fans as much as possible; negative feedback often backfires and makes them MORE obsessive.

I see that Marina has done her homework and is following these recommendations beautifully. I feel greatly validated!

    Hi Chemikal,

Re the hanging women, this may have been a “red herring” (false clue) or an allusion to the children’s guess-the-word game called “hangman.”

Congratulations on your exam — though I suspect your score had less to do with luck than with superior preparation. Still, best of “luck” on your next one. I trust your health is improving, also.

I don’t think “xoxo” would raise any eyebrows in my part of the country. Sometimes what’s considered “appropriate” in the USA depends on the person’s background. We tend to expect Latins and Slavs to be more emotional and demonstrative than English, Germans, and Scandinavians. In my neighborhood, what’s normal behavior for a Mexican might be considered odd for a Dutchman (our two most conspicuous ethnic groups, after mutts like me!)

  • hs4mm

    .
Here’s my take, with the explicit qualification that I have very little experience in social matters and am presenting this as just my thoughts based on my meager knowledge and experience to date: I am a visitor to this web-site. The owner of the web-site has configured it in a certain way. As a visitor, I can either live with the configuration for what I get from the site, or decide to go my own way. Being a visitor does NOT give me any right to offer unsolicited critiques or to make unsolicited suggestions to the owner. In the specific example here, when the owner collects items within square brackets and finds things that are something other than word requests (perhaps editorial comments), she will figure out how to deal with it — this is her site and that is her job. Polite reports of things that are broken in the configuration is a different matter; as perhaps are polite requests for features or enhancements — the owner has provided a special contact form for such support.

    Just my 2 cents,

    –Hs4Mm
    .

  • Chemikal

Thanks for your 2 cents, they are appreciated and noted.
It didn’t strike me as being impolite, maybe it was, in which case I have to mention that it was never intended to be.
To the owner, I’m merely providing feedback.
But it’s not about owner and visitor ethics here.
I’m pending on getting my Engineer’s certificate, in Computer Science, and this is my professional take on the situation.
Though I’m aware that nothing I can say can make her change anything, and so I only stated the obvious. :D
I could suggest a form for filing the word requests, I could suggest a plug-in that inserts a special button for marking such requests, I could suggest many other things, but frankly, when I saw “[dog] or [blah blah blah]” I just thought she chose an inefficient method.
I tend to administer certain doses of tough love to my friends, without even realizing it.
Again, thanks a lot for your 2 cents Hs4Mm ;)

  • Chemikal

    Nice new avatar John!

I am not saying the old requests are moot.. I am just finding it difficult to find the requests when there are common words in the requests… I end up with hundreds of pages where I have to search for comments that are requests.

If the request is for a word that is not common or a phrase that I can search for, then I can find it very easily. The brackets are just going to help speed things up for me in the future.

I could make a form where requests are put into a database, but then we wouldn’t have as much interaction as we have in the comments by doing it this way.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

The game is posed as a hangman game, as she has done for all the ones I have seen. So I think the gallows scene has nothing to do with the game other than that reference. However, I could be proven wrong if future games have a hanging scene that somehow indicates the era, etc.

  • http://18wheels.mevio.com/ Warren

I like the idea of random selection too. I get here late and many have already found the answer so I feel like there isn’t any reason to try and guess the word. But now that I see how the game is being played I’ll make more of an effort.

We will now have to be careful to no longer use square brackets for parenthetical words inside parenthetical words. (That doesn’t happen very often, but I remember doing it at least once.) Also square brackets are sometimes used in smilies, although I haven’t seen one here yet.

  • Chemikal

Right Marina, now I see where you’re coming from, here’s another idea.
    A javascript plugin, that enables you to click on a “Requests Here” button that makes a window pop up, of the type: JOptionPane.ShowInputDialog(“Please input JUST your word/phrase request in this box, and click OK”);
Once the OK button is pressed, the window closes and the quoted input is pasted into the comment section, but also saved into a file, while being preceded by customizable info (author, date, lesson, or a URL with the comment number).
All the info should be written and automatically matched up into a .txt file.
Easy access, easy life, and it takes up virtually 0% hard disk space.
The program is pretty basic coding in Java… but I am not familiar with the WordPress API, otherwise I would have gladly wrote it for you. But if you pass my idea on to someone that is used to creating plugins for WP, and knows both Java and php, then it is very doable!
I wish I could have helped out more, but I don’t have the time to familiarize myself with something as large as the WP API right now. I still am in the exam session.
    Good luck

“What makes a fan obsessive?” Good question. The simplest answer is that the subconscious mind does not distinguish between (a) a beautiful young woman, attractively dressed, sitting on a bed, giving us her undivided attention and flirting with us, and (b) a computer image of said woman looking directly into a camera. So our subconscious, which governs our emotions, makes us fall in love or get infatuated with the computer image, while we think we’ve fallen for the woman.

(In fairness to Marina, to the extent that the image truly represents her, we’re in love with her. But I suspect that in actually getting acquainted with her in person, many of us would be surprised at what we’d find.)

Then there are the individual reasons for obsessing (or being a frequent visitor). You obviously have professional reasons for wanting to master and polish your English. (Wait — Polish English? Never mind. ) Bob, CampKohler, and I (just to name a few) love coming here to tell bad puns and tall tales — it’s a good substitute for drinking. And I’ve had a love of linguistics and etymology since long before Marina was born, plus I have a breast fetish AND OCD. When people get to my age, Evan, they’ve generally already discovered the truth and all they want is a bit of fantasy; I suspect that is why many of us keep coming here, quite apart from the opportunity to activate our second childhood and play at being the bad boys at the back of the class.
The important thing to remember about fantasies is to keep them as fantasies and don’t try to make them come true, or disappointment will be sure to follow.
The way to keep a fantasy for a long time is the same as the way to keep an erection for a long time
“Just leave it alone – Don’t fuck with it.”

I guess I have to stick to youtube. There isn’t a website where you get recognicion <cant spell that .. for writing stories.

  • http://www.hotforwords.com Marina

So, James, you’re having trouble finding your forte. Keep plugging away.. watch what others do and try to get inspired. I find that the people who make the most videos find a gimmick or an idea and stick with it. If you rely on coming up with something totally original each time, then you will hit dry spells and not make videos for long periods of time… like nigahiga, lisanova, smpfilms.

Pick something simple and you can be making videos almost daily, like sxephil, whatthebuckshow, me.

Even though our videos may appear simple, I put about 4-5 hours into each of my 2-3 minute videos.. sxephil said that he puts 4 hours into his videos… and whatthebuck puts 5 hours into his videos… that’s why the simpler the concept, the more likely you’ll make a video and will then be able to put the 4-5 hours into editing that it may take.

Pick something you are genuinely interested in as well.

  • http://uk.youtube.com/user/jamesingtonthethird James

Thanks Marina. I can spend hours too sometimes. I have shut my channel down for now. At some point soon I will make a video, I need to do some searching and thinking for what needs to be done. I think my channel has just gone stale lately, so I have killed it and will come back with something fresh soon maybe in about 2 weeks a week to find what to do and a week of editing

Why do you want to make youtube videos?
Or better yet, why are you pushing yourself to broadcast on youtube personally?
You could put together videos, without having to participate yourself in them, and you could still be very successful.

I see your channel type says Comedian. Well… you should start thinking from there.

    Good luck!

LOOK AT THIS FOR TIMING MARINA!!!

@vprincess is Toto an old dog? about 1 second ago

IDEA: (possibly niche) Has lots of voiceover (Voice in my head) A person with a split personality (I think), finds a bomb. Will be funny too. In the future I wont realese a video unless its flashy and took me ages to make, also I don’t give a crap if it doesn’t do well I just guess I will have to wait until I make something good enough (like a damn baby laughing  ) . Any-way I am downloading a 4 GB plugin. Will write script tomorrow maybe and film on weekend. May be out late, need nice weather (my camera goes black otherwise). Perhaps I could do a few vids of my take on certain disorders. This could work because I am a one man band. Lady Marina? Your take on the situation.

Oooh, I just noticed the naked lady poster by Pablo Picasso on the right.

You demonstrate a great deal of incredible ingenuity in your videos, Marina — they are not repetitive or formulaic.

Evan, you’re not serious in thinking I am suggesting that? I am merely pointing out that any recurring TV show has a structure and they follow it each and every episode, every magazine has a structure.. anything that comes out on regular basis follows a structure.

If you want to put videos out on a regular basis, it’s much easier (and possibly more entertaining) when you create some kind of structure to your videos. That allows you to focus on other aspects, like the writing.

If you want to put videos out sporadically (once a month or so) then you can do something completely different each time. But you run the risk of the videos not gaining traction as people have no idea what they are getting into each time.

Even a show like Month Python, that seemed to be a hodgepodge crazy ideas has a structure to it.

    Just my 2 cents.

I think that is the “magic” to which Lady M is referring. Monty Python seems totally random and spontaneous. As the viewer, I never know what will hit me next, but I know they will hit me. Lady M also follows a string of consistency; I know that I will learn some things and have some fun. On the production side, however, they cannot reinvent the wheel with each episode. They each possess posess pasess pazesh have a creative quality for which I yearn. As the artist, they successfully conceal the effort (a good dancer or gymnast makes his or her art look easy.) George Lucas said the same thing about special effects that Michael Haynes said about playing defensive back in the NFL, “If they notice me, I am not doing my job.”

And I only charge a penny.

I think that it was lalready a non specific phrase intended to express general lack of restraint by the time aviation adopted the term. Just my opinion though, I don’t have any real way to back that up yet (I am still looking).

    Yes their quite athletic also.

(Your pennies are on a [gold-standard].) I now see that while some elements of the structure might need to be repetitive in their content (conclusion includes “subscribe to my channel”), other elements allow for creativity in their content (e.g., the homework is not always “use in a sentence”). So when I wrote that your videos are not “are not repetitive or formulaic”, I was focused on the content. The structure does not intrude on the enjoyment of the content.

    Marina,

Would you take my word request in memory of my Golden Retriever?

Her name was “Nala” – As most noted from the 90′s Movie “The Lion King”

We had to put her down yesterday after finding she had cancer with no alternatives  . She was a good, loving, and gentle friend for almost 12 years.

I want to do a photo book of all of our memories and her name is most notable but I’m finding many different meanings for it and I’d like to know what the most common meaning for “Nala” is. It’s my understanding “Nala” comes or is used in the Swahili language.

I’d be ever so greatful if you wouldn’t mind someday doing this as a word.

Here is a picture of my best friend – > http://www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=649277

    Thanks again….

    Hey Marina,

I’m a bit confused about the use of the word [extant]. I have always used it to mean something extra or unnecessary, or something that sticks out. However, when I look it up, it appears to be used to describe something that simply exists. For example: The opposite of non-existant would be [extant].

    Could you please help clarify?

    Thanks!

Although I had heard Marina’s Maxim radio show about vanilla, I learnt something that was very important to me from the video lesson.
