Dear совершенная Marina, Well, I also had the right answer, and provided three names for extra credit! But I wasn’t selected for a prize.
But if I told you the prize I want from you in advance, you probably would never pick me for a winner! So, I’ll keep quiet and hope to win next week’s conest!
Nice dress, and you look so happy when you’re playing a game!
I hope you have a nice safe trip to Las Vegas and back from CES. Microsoft is announcing their new operating system, “Windows 7.” I might take a trip to Las Vegas in 2010 for the next CES.

Gave up on GTW XI, after considerable thought. Would like to request the origins of ‘absurd’, don’t think it’s been done, but I could have missed the video. Congratulations to winners of game XI.

Well, well, well… this was swell. If at first you don’t succeed… don’t give up… the next chance is only a week away. Hooray!

  • Chemikal

Hehe I didn’t expect to win anything so easily, but it was fun to dream… :)
Congratz to the winners that Marina picked out, from her site and from YouTube.
It sure was exceptionally nice of her to pick 2 winners instead of one.

  • Chemikal

    Seems so!
Check the comments CJ and I posted to the game video.

I love today’s quote of the day:

“People demand freedom of speech to make up
for the freedom of thought which they avoid.”
    - Soren Aabye Kierkegaard 1813-1855

Remind me to use that concept in next week’s contest,
even though I’m going to disqualify myself from winning.

  • Chemikal

    Any change in subs?
I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t get into this, and try his skills or his luck.

Also, a few word requests :
    “for Pete’s sake!”,
“get a kick out of it”,
    “fingers crossed”.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/animalntaz animalntaz

Well, at least I guessed hacker right. But haker was a bit of a throw off, since you can’t SPECIFICALLY find that word anywhere. Do they only fish for hake or is more of a fish farming thing? (Because there are plenty of fish out there in the sea!)

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/animalntaz animalntaz, Vote Against Philip

I think the 2008 Sexiest Geek Contest has become a bit of a joke. It doesn’t really matter to me if Marina wins or not. But there is a whole list of people who are CLEARLY sexier than Philip DeFranco, that have been disregarded. :???:
So if you want Marina to have a better chance at winning….

Vote for Marina AND vote against Phil! (That’s like +2 votes a person per a day.)

Sometimes I think a lot of the voters are insecure idiots who have been watching YouTube for far too long.

    Dear Marina,
I was thinking about you the other day. Your vocabulary must be so colorful, I wonder what you say when you are really worked up and and wildly swearing profanities. (Or do you swear in Russian?) WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD SWEAR? In court, to swear is good but, to swear as in a back alley is not good. HOT FOR WORDS MUST INVESTIGATE.

    Hey Marina, another thought:
You have a 3g iphone right? So do i (and they’re amazing!!!!! I love mine!). Anyway….you should make a hotforwords iphone app. If you don’t know how to make and submit an app, contact some of the companies that do, and I’m sure they would be eager to make it. That would be awesome! (and a lot more convenient than getting on the computer, signing in, etc….)
    You should think about it.

What is the origin of the word “bunny?” Isn’t the proper term rabbit? Thx in advance!

  • jesus058

oh, nice! ill look forward to it then!

Also, last year i attended a foreign language day at the University of Oregon, and there was a class i attended on etymology. My friends and i went in not expecting much, and it wasnt a very popular class, but it was actually really interesting. We went over several examples of ancient words (as in from ancient civilizations) and watched how they developed over time. Maybe you could do that as a branch off of your ‘Guess the Word Game’, where you give the ancient word, and have people guess what the word means in modern english. (which is essentially the same thing we did in the class i attended). I think that would be really interesting.

Thanks for listening! Let me know what you think of my idea…

    Word Request: patience
As in, “some people just don’t have any patience when making requests.” I thought this would be an excellent word to find the origin of, and, how does that word relate to patient, someone who is under the care of a doctor.

    There seem to be many related phrases or expressions to the word patience such as;
    - “My patience is wearing thin”
    - “Patience my young Jedi” (<– That’s for you Yoda Mike)
    - “Patience my pretty”
    - “Patience is a Virtue” (although some might object to that)
    - “Patience my ass, I’m gonna kill something.”

Could you do the video in the next hour?
I don’t have all day, you know.

There are, at least for Windows PCs, download-helper applications that can resume a download from the point at which an on-going download crashed. But you wrote “upload to this Hotel Network” (rather than download to your laptop) — you mean from your place in CA to Hotel in Las Vegas? If you are doing a ftp transfer, the ftp software filezilla claims that it “Supports resume and transfer of large files >4GB” — but this is for Windows only — I used filezilla once to upload a large file from my Windows laptop to a remote server over the internet.

Incidentally, some servers require a periodic “keep awake” signal from the PC that is uploading data to it — if the server does not get this signal, it will cut-off connection with the PC; filezilla generates this signal (not all ftp software generate such a signal).

Any YT vid can be embedded on any site if the author so allows. Some vids have an empty embed field, but M’s obviously do not. In effect they are paying her “royalties” by funneling traffic to her vids.

Speaking of other languages, I don’t understand why M doesn’t do a Russian version of every lesson for the almost 3 megapeople in the U.S. and the zillions abroad. Now that I think of it, why isn’t there a Russian version of the Website? Maybe it’s because there’s not a Russian version of Google Ads.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

Yeah, you click on a lesson and your browser is disabled for 24 hours from looking at any other Website but M’s. That’s the ticket.

Now we need a term for this technique… How about “blackholing?” Once you are over M’s event horizon, you can kiss the rest of the Web goodbye.

  • CampKohler – Sacramento CA

It’s kind of specialized, so I have a suspicion that it appeared in one form or another of the media and took off from there. It could have been a movie or radio or even a comic strip, but something widespread, i.e. not just one book. That’s just my WAG.

I have only been to one Grateful Dead show, but it was the musical event of my life. When I was in the Navy, my buddy’s dad was a roadie for the Dead. We had backstage passes at the Long Beach, CA coliseum. It was not really backstage, but in the back of the stage. It felt like everyone could see you, but because of the lighting, they couldn’t. We sat on a couch about 20′ behind the band, between the two drummers. I don’t smoke weed, but the air was literally blue. I didn’t even know I was hi, until I stopped on the way home, went in a phone booth and said, “Man, this phone has a really bad connection. Problem was, I hadn’t even picked up the phone, yet.

It is a good idea.. but as you mentioned.. the key to my guess the word games is that I try to make them Google-proof (a term I made up, by the way :-) )

This past one had a nice diversion thrown in there that resulted in probably 99.99999999 percent of the people picking pander as the word! I was pretty happy with that. In previous ones, people have gotten the word in 30 seconds!!

Hey HFW Fans! Don’t miss the “Cover of Cool English Magazine” post — it’s a misnomer, there’s actually a whole interview with Marina, where she “spills the beans” about what she’s doing.

    My take on it:
Marina is passionate about philology. She’s using her sex appeal to lure us into sharing her passion, until how we feel about sex becomes inextricably linked to how we feel about words.

The name according to answers.com: “As 1965 drew to its close, the Warlocks rechristened themselves the Grateful Dead, the name taken from a folk tale discovered in a dictionary by Garcia”

The use of “dead head” dates back to one of the earliest uses by Mark Twain in 1873 which meant “Anyone traveling for free”, and took on the meaning: “A person either admitted to a theatrical or musical performance without charge, or paid to attend” around the turn of the century, with the band itself originating “dead heads” in reference to themselves in print in 1971 on the sleeve of the “Grateful Dead” album for their postal mailing list.

Having lived through it and been there personally, this was the era of all the “heads” in general like “pot head” and “coke head”and “drug head” and just about “anything head” so I reason in thinking back on it this was how the “dead head” came about and/or shared the meaning of getting in for free.

As i recall though, there are some words that, when directly translated, mean something weird or obscure, but have evolved to mean something else. So do any of your etymology books have anything like that? Think a lot of the words we used were old latin, if that helps.

OK I gotta fess up. I don’t learn foreign languages; I collect foreign phrases the way other people collect stamps, then trot them out like I would a stamp collection to impress people.

I really only speak English, Spanish, and some Welsh. Oh, and read a little Russian, Bulgarian, Japanese, and French. Maybe a touch of Serbian and Greek. Plus of course whatever words in Portuguese, Romanian, and Italian that have Spanish cognates.

That said, the phrase is obviously Latin; the two “v’s” are the old way of writing “u”. When I get off work I’ll try looking up each word individually. But for now, something about “The best life” and “friends” is all I can make out.
