Yes I have been on picnics. We would have a family picnic every year where all the aunts, uncles, cousins, moms and dads would get together and have a big meal and enjoy family members we haven’t seen all year.

One time I was at a picnic with a few friends and we had a small makeshift BBQ fire going like the one in Marina’s video. The grass surrounding the BBQ caught on fire and it was a bit windy… ooops! We nearly collapsed from exhaustion running back and forth to a creek to get water to put it out. It reached about an acre and a half. There wasn’t a hose or firetruck within 30 miles. We were doomed if we didn’t get it put out.

Add a nice summer sunset = romantic picnic.
Add snow = We go out somewhere.

What motivate you to pick what (‘WORD REQUEST’) to use
I ask this because, back when you first opened this classroom, you did words that are not used in everyday talk.
Words like…
‘PHANTASMAGORIA’ or ‘EXTEPORANEOUS’
I for one hope you go back to that style for alittle while at least.
P.S.
I like to use ‘Merriam-Webster’ thesauruses and/or vocabulary builder when I’m writing my stories.
Hoping you can tell me some others that would be helpful in my quest for the “GREAT STORY” that I hope to complete one day.

You will be our tour guide.
Or we can call it a field trip. All students who attend will recieve extra credit.

Picnics, barbecues, beer bash, camp outs, done all these things especialy beer bashes. If you don’t know what a beer bash is its an all night party usually without the music and dancing just a bunch of people get together and drink all night till you pass out. A camaraderie you could call it.

Dear ÑÐ¾Ð²ÐµÑ€ÑˆÐµÐ½Ð½Ð°Ñ Marina, You are so thin, you probably ate very little at that picnic, probably not more than a piece or two of the shaslik you were cooking!
I no longer go on picnics. When I was in the Army, I had enough of dining “in the field.”
It’s much nicer to dine in a good restaurant, with nice furnishings, fine cuisine, and of course, beautiful company such as yourself. We could talk about word origins, literature, good food, or anything you’d like!

One time a friend and I went to the beach to have a bbq and do a little shore fishing. When we got there we relalized that we forgot the bbq but remembered the charcoal(long story)! So we created a hole with the beach rock and filled it full of charcoal. After the coals got real hot we scavenge for the biggest and flattest beach rocks we could find and laid them over the coals. The rocks got nice and hot and thats what we cook the meat on or as I like to call it, Beach Rock Chicken. Very tasty but a bit salty. AAAND I forgot the bait so I tried the chicken but I don’t think the fish liked it much …It was that or drive 15 minutes back to the house and get the bbq and the bait! Wheres the adventure in that?

My nieces first husband’s family would have a big picnic on Father’s Day every year, so my family would join in. But when they got divorced, that custom was abandoned. I guess we are indoor eaters and want to have all the conveniences close at hand. Our style is more the screened porch and nearby BBQ — enjoying the great outdoors, but in the shade with no bugs!

It turned out to be a decent picnic with so much tasty food and drinks and desserts and most of the people whom I didn’t know had already left and so I just said well let’s clean up some of this mess and we started to clear the tables of paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, etc. and we tossed the trash into the wire trash baskets there and then I pretty much left after that.

My compliments, Marina, on your Bar-B-Q apparatus. Kabobs resting on 2 bricks. Simple, cheap and effective. I’ll be sure to take along some bricks, brickets and skewers next time I go car camping. And some kabob food, too, of course.
The last picnic I was on I ended up falling into the lake trying to get my last pack of smokes out of the water.
My grilfriend tossed them to me (poorly  ) and I tried to catch them (again poorly  )
They hit the ground and went over the edge and into the water about two feet below. I got down on my stomach stretched out to grab them. When I got them I tossed them to shore. Doing this caused me to loose balance and I tumbled into the water.

At large (unless you are speaking of criminals on the loose), means without assignment to duty by geographic area, kind of work or other limits. A journalist at large is not assigned to a particular kind of story, such as crime or politics; they can cover any kind of story. Local politicians, if at large, are elected by and serve the people within an entire governmental area, e.g. a county. The opposite would be where the area is divided into smaller areas, such as districts; they are elected by those in a given district and traditionally represent them exclusively (even though there may not be a legal requirement to do so).
In the U.S. Congress, there is one Congressmen per district, so they are not at large; in the Senate, there are two Senators per state, but they do not have assigned territories, so, although not referred to in that way, they are in effect at large as far as their state is concerned, but not with regard to the country.

Hi Marina,
As an amateur etymologist and logophile, and of course in line with the style of this show, quite the fan of gluteal mass, I would like to share my favorite word, and ask you to investigate it:
Callypigian.
Thank you very muchly,

CampKohler – Sacramento CA
Octothorpe is relatively new. Sometimes it is easier to research a very old word, because it will have been used widely and enough time has passed for sources for it to be discovered and documented. New words may turn on the testimony of one or two people; the history may be nothing more than an anecdote or two, so they may not wind up in Marina’s library.
After a thousand years passes, what will the record say about such a scantily-documented word?
Late 20th cent. Was believed to be first found scrawled on the wall of a garage in the ancient (possibly mythical) Silicon Valley, said to exist on the former west coast of North America before the Big One slid it into the Pacific in the early 22nd cent. Anecdotal evidence from survivors hint that it was one of the words in the famous Marina Lesson Series, the originals of which were housed in the Orlova Memorial Institute of Philology and Etymology, near Los Angeles, from which no records were known to have survived.
CampKohler – Sacramento CA
A 1946 USDA-sponsored study found that, on average, two hotdogs from every package are burned beyond edibility on a BBQ or over a fire or are dropped and discarded or are fed to pets. Statistically, it all works out.
It’s true, I tell you.
CampKohler – Sacramento CA
The Azbuka was the first RV made in the former Soviet Union. Unfortunately, it’s distinctive storage compartment, protruding from the rear, lead to the slang use of the word to mean the posterior of a heavy woman. Unable to overcome the stigma and the fact that less than .0000065 percent of the population could afford one, the project was abandoned. Soon after, it was a national source endless jokes, that the same local workers in the retooled plant later produced large and extra-large women’s garments.
It’s true, I tell you.
CampKohler – Sacramento CA
Gypsy women do not use squirt bottles to regulate cooking, which would be unacceptably modern. They spit on the meat and utter violent curses. This not only cooks the meat properly, it also serves as a form of practice that allows them to develop their cursing skills without bringing harm to nearby persons and animals. Well aware of this, gypsy men know better than to approach a gypsy woman while she is barbecuing, which is just the opposite of Western society.
It’s true, I tell you.

No, that’s not really the origin of the word. Marina wrote an article for askmen.com in which she discussed the origin of that word. You can read it for yourself here.
I suspect it comes from the French “au large” which means “offshore” or “in the open sea”.
A suitable nautical origin for our Marine goddess to investigate?

I have been on countless picnics in my life but only a few stand out in the memory.
The best were beach picnics in Thailand and the South of France.
In both places you don’t need to prepare a picnic in advance, for as soon as you find a place to sit down you will be approached by vendors offering a selection of culinary delights.
In Thailand, it’s a real picnic, sitting on the ground or at best on beach loungers, whereas in France there are beach restaurants every bit as civilised as any other eatery.
The most unusual picnic I ever attended was a Fourth of July barbecue on an ice floe, a hundred miles north-west of Spitzbergen, beside a research ship moored to the floe, and the next morning we were visited by two families of polar bears scavenging the remains of the food left out on the ice overnight.

Homework: Boaters do something similar to a picnicking. We do it on the docks. It’s a pot luck kind of thing that boater do several times a year. During the summer months you can find a dock party just about every week. The aroma of gas grills cooking food just makes your mouth water. Some of the food I have eaten you would not believe it was cooked on a boat. I’ve had dinners that I would easily paid $20 – $30 bucks for. Sometime you can get freshly caught salmon steaks. Yea, large STEAKS! More salmon you could every eat. Just imagine tasty a honey glazed salmon steak with steamed veggies and red potatoes. Yea, I love dock parties.

Quote from Marina:
Tazman,
I’ve found that people really like hearing the bizarre stories associated with ordinary words.
How about bizarre etymological connections between seemingly unrelated terms; e.g. “Boston Celtics” (the basketball team) and “Galatians” (as in, St. Paul’s letter)?
Here’s another obscure fact: “Ankara” (formerly Angora) means the same as the Welsh word angor. We Celts get around!
Yeah, “Britain” derives from the Welsh “Prydain.” But supposedly we stole the term from the pre-Celtic peoples who arrived in Britain after the ice went off — Picts or Beakerfolk, some such people lost in the mists of time.

When we were twelve, my buddy and I played truant from school on a nice June day. In a park across town, we met two girls about the same age. We spent the afternoon telling stories and jokes, and shared our lunches. Not much of a picnic, but we learned that girls could be good company, and I think the girls learned that not all twelve year old boys were monsters. Our schools were not co-ed then, so we all grew up a little that day.Schools and rules were quite strict then, and we caught hell next day, but it was worth it. Many picnics later, that one still stands out. Thanks, Marina.

I guess life itself is some sort of picnic. You pick what you like, you trash, destroy or ignore what you don’t like. Between friends and family, it’s a bliss. Between politicians, competitors or businessmen, it sometimes becomes a messy piranha’s feast.

Oh well, Marina won’t get to this anyway. The first Neanderthal was found in Neanderthal Valley in Germany. The valley was named after a German language scholar named Neumann (German for “new man”), who liked to refer to himself as “Neander” (Greek for “new man”).
At least, that’s as well as I can remember from the National Geographic article without going back and looking it up.
Por supuesto, todos de nosotros somos americanos, de Alaska hasta Argentina. Y pienso yo del espanol como lengua americana, no lengua extranjera.
Well there’s this Aussie joke:
Q: Why is American beer like making love in a canoe?
A: Because it’s fucking close to water!

Yes, we go on picnics all the time. In bad weather, we will have indoor picnics with the grandkids. Just spread a blanket in the living room, make some PB&Js, and the picnic is on.
Was it just me, or does M have a much stronger Russian accent when she is in Russia? I thought so.

Oh yeah, M (and family?) around 1:20 reminds me SOOO much of my oldest granddaughter. She is only ten, now, but she is still all arms and legs. She is her Papa’s little geek. She sits and watches the History Channel, Science Channel, etc. with Papa. She loves planets, animals, any other book she can get her hands on. Oh yeah, she loves faeries, too.

“Shashlic”
is one of the few Russian words I know.
I hope it tasted as good as it looked.

Doppelganger is german for double image or ghost, and is a person or image that follows you or looks like you. The Barbie doll became the doppelganger of the daughter of the lady who designed it based on her.
dis was a RAndom…for a friend…just before [brats]
Most of the time the Russians enjoy Caucasian style barbecue. The main difference to European or western style barbecue is the size of meat pieces. In the Caucasus they thread small pieces of meat and vegetables onto long metal skewers.
