I like the big screen. You can see the video so much clearer.
Homework: Mahi Mahi (GOOD fishy! YUM!)
That’s my favorite to go look for 15 miles
out off Marathon Key. They tend to ride the
currents and school there. Best catch was
172 lbs in one day! It’s hit-and-miss, though.
Sharks can bugger things up but good. Then
all you get are fish heads. Barracuda, bonitas,
amberjacks and bowfin tuna are also common
to catch when fishing out there for dolphin.
Bait is easy – frozen squid works good.
If I find a school, I’ll get one on a line and
trawl him around (the school follows).
The biggest one I caught was 33 lbs.
When we get ‘em aboard – it’s right into the
ice with them. 70% of this fish is edible (filet).
Real easy to gut and clean. The ice makes the
skin peel off in a clean sheet.

Can you also help me out please Marina? Can you reply (or email me whichever easiest) and tell me how you managed to get your video to 16:9 format I tried it and i can only , make it work with titles? Does this mean if I want widescreen I will have to go and buy an HD camcorder?

The fish or shrimp tacos in San Felipe Mexico is a favorite
{ warning don’t eat from a street vendor who cooks the fish

the time it takes from putting the greasy taco in your mouth until it is ready to shoot out of you is equal to the time it takes to drive from San Felipe to border traffic
Congrats on #1 (TWICE!)
Oily fish (bluefish, amberjack, etc.)
can be tempered to taste better if
you broil or grill ‘em and use a sauce

I’ve never eaten Mahi-mahi. I think it has to be shipped here from Hawaii, so it’s kind of expensive. To answer your question, my favorite fish is tuna. It’s available everywhere, here. I enjoy the white albacore tuna fillets. Salmon is also good and it has many healthy fish oils.

Dear Miss Marina Orlova,
I loved this lesson. Mahimahi, never tried it. I eat salmon often though and I know that it is considered a superfood. Next is tuna, I like tuna sandwhiches and tuna subs from subway. And then lobster, crab, and shrimp. Mahimahi sounds pretty good though. I wonder if it has a strong strong taste?
I request the word: Shampoo. I was at work at Walgreens today, putting away a hair product, and I was wondering about how cool Shampoo is. It’s fun to say: Shampoo

Hey!
I have another word request…
Since it is almost Thanksgiving, I thought it would be relevent to pick a word that relates to this holiday. The word is cornucopia. I know it is a thing (some) people put vegitables and dried fruit in, but why is it called a cornucopia. It is not made out of corn, and corn certainly does not cope with it. Could it possibly do something with Greek mythology (hint, hint)…
Thanks for everything!

A number of years ago I was a cook at a restaurant next to the ocean in Maui. We featured Mahi Mahi, Ono and Ahi and cooked it over a hot grill using Mesquite charcoal… awesome! This Hawaiian fisherman would come by to sell us 8 foot tunas. It was really neat… we’d cut it up into a lot of steaks/filets and also make Japanese sashimi… (thinly sliced raw tuna served with hot Wasabi mustard and soy sauce… yum yum!)
I really like Kokanee (fresh water Salmon) and Pacific Sockeye Salmon.

OK, I think I figured this out. If you type a smiley’s alternate, e.g. (instead of clicking the icon), it works only if there is nothing on either side of it but a space. Any character adjacent the alt. causes Word Press (“WP”) to ignore the alt. Another mystery solved by your trusty Hotforweirdcrap.
What set me off on this distraction was the  alt. that appeared amongst John’s collection of smileys. Why wasn’t the alt. converted to the icon by WP? It was because John typed the HTML entity for a space right next to it, without a space intervening, like this: ” +nbsp; ” (the & was replaced by a + in this example so you can see it). If he had typed a space (vs. the HTML entity for it) between the two, the alt. would have been converted to a smiley as (I assume) he had intended.
The rule of no adjacent characters (and here we have to consider a space to be a non-character) also applies to emoticons, e.g. “:-)”. There must be a space on either side in order for Word Press to translate them into a smiley. Too, it must be one WP recognizes; WP does not recognize all emoticons. There may not be an emoticon for every WP smiley, or maybe I just don’t know what they are. For example, I found that an 8 draws sunglasses, but I don’t know what draws the cat’s ears.
I suppose I should thank John for this quest. I suppose… :???:
Shall we ask him just what he was doing in the first place?

I don’t know about Houston on any kind of day, but even if future jet travel cuts flight time down to a 5th of present time it takes to fly, the airport drudgery will have to be shortened, too. I foresee arriving at the airport with only a carry-on bag, and stepping on some sort of individual tramway that not only shunts you to your terminal but with a computer, checks you in, scans you for weapons, bombs and contraband, tells you whether you can upgrade to first class seating, and processes your credit card.
http://www.youtube.com/CheVolay Che Volay
yea, see what you mean by the contrast
tropic jungle vs concrete jungle
http://www.youtube.com/pedantickarl pedantickarl
James, read Marina’s comment again.
I think you didn’t read it.
Marina said: “Make your video 640×360”
You said: “…but I have always used 648X480.”
What Marina said is correct.
If you want to know how she came up with the number, it is all about ratios.
Std video: 4×3 = 1.3333
is equal to 640×480 = 1.3333
Wide Screen: 16×9 = 1.7777
Therefore, you need to tweek one of
the 4×3 numbers to get the Wide Screen ratio.
640 divided by 1.7777 yields 360
So, make sure you set your project size to 640×360.
Then trim you video to remove the black bands.
Then, render the video to the same size, 640×360.
http://www.youtube.com/pedantickarl pedantickarl
Bingo… love catfish as well as salmon in all forms.
CampKohler – Free speech only gives you certain rights, y’know. It is a responsibility. Try going into a movie theater and yelling “Fire” and you WILL be arrested. Talk about bombs at the airport and you WILL be arrested. By being in a public forum, and being disruptive, you WILL find there are those who assert that freedom of speech does NOT give you the right to mess with people for your own selfish amusement.
.
koalabear – We recently went around in circles fretting and stewing over what to do about another person who was being disruptive (for their own amusement – “What to do? Oh, what to do!”). The Mad Tea party analogy was in the thread. Decisive action was finally talen and the problem was resolved. The good of the many outweighs the good of the few, or the one; especially when “the one” is being an ass.
I did get a hoot out of CampKohler’s reference to the Wizard of Oz (hiding behind the curtain – either unable or unwilling to act). Do nothing and more anarchy will follow. Imagine this site with four or five more “John”-types, and another dozen, like me; all going back and forth. I’m here for Marina’s class, not to continually deal with some fool’s noise. Look at all the noise this guy has bred and ask yourself; where does it stop? Peace! [I'll get off my soapbox, now]

But if you eat a sensible diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of rest you are going to die ( eventually ) anyway.

by the way MARINA HERE IS ANOTHER WORD REQUEST – KARMA!
When computers were first introduced to the engineering field, timelines sped up as the shift from handmade drawings to CAD was adopted. One old timer I worked for was having difficulty adjusting and would repeatedly say “I am surrounded by saboteurs and assassins”. He developed many paranoid quirks. Built a little shrine to his outdated slide rule; mumbled to himself A LOT. John is going through this quirky behaviour…
I guess being a well digger makes you crazy after awhile…
Too many dry wells?
I had to get away from the engineering, myself. It’s been taken over by lawyers and managers who know nothing of engineering, and little about law and management.
Fishes, zebras… All the same! The virtue of a prisoner is good behaviour in front of his guardians. But the most beautiful thing for him, the only thing that could make him run like hell is.. Freedom! Yes, ma’am. Liberty’s butt is sexier than Intelligence’s. And it is the only one that a prisonner will follow. Intelligence is not sexy. Beauty and Liberty are.
Virtue, Beauty and Liberty. The three Graces that you should definitely reel up in your lessons, señora.

The oil content is higher, the taste is more rich than an Atlantic salmon, my ‘rich’ I mean harder to digest.
The Pacific water is colder that the Atlantic in general, maybe you’re so far North it makes no difference.
Would it make sense that the colder the water the more fat in the fish, if fish really do have fat? Then if they do would not it be in the oil content?

Mahimahi…
Unfortunately, I’ve never tasted it due to my geographical location, but I have a strong feeling that I’ll like it.
Journey to the fish…
As a guy who grew up and loved fish, I like a huge variety of seafood and have a hard time pinpointing a single favorite. If there’s one thing we have in common, Marina, it’s our love for Salmon. I not too fussed about how exactly it’s cooked so long as it ends up tasting good, but I do prefer sashimi when available.
I gues that would make sence… pacific salmon only go back to their spawning place ones in the their lifetime and then they’ll die. So they use the fat as a food reserve and don’t eat anything when they’re in fresh water. atlantic salmons don’t do that, so maybe that’s why they’re(pacific) fatter……. But it’s almost impossible to get WILD atlantic salmon in the US, cus they’re considered an endangered species or you must be some native fisherman or something like that.
oil is fat…. I catch my salmon In lapland (north of Finland) near the polar circle, so it’s pretty cold there

I don’t see the relationship between the questions.
I would argue that a freedom fighter should fight in his/her homeland to repel invaders. Attacking/bombing your own people to prevent them from voting is NOT freedom fighting no matter were you are.
Using a hijacked commercial airliner with women and children on board as a fuel filled missile is NOT freedom fighting; it is terrorism pure and simple.
When ‘freedom fighters’ employ terror tactics they may seem to get closer to their goal, but they never seem to ask themselves what will happen if they seem to succeed, and the new ‘freedom fighters’ use the same tactics. I would argue that it is then the responsibility of the people to expose the known terrorists to break the cycle. The heroes of Flight 93 were true freedom fighters ( and though they might not have had ANY experience, they WERE the militia as described in the Constitution ).
My favorite fish would have to be Wahoo. No fishy taste, no fishy smell. Shark is pretty good too. Mahi was my favorite for a long time but then I tried Wahoo. Oh yummy. I’ve only seen it on the menu at Fish House Vera Cruz though. But thats cool, theres a Fish House one mile from my house. Lucky me.

Orion, shipmate, please do not get me wrong. I am not apologizing for terrorists, nor acts of terror. I do believe, though, that it is often to easy to confuse the two groups based solely upon which side they are on. We use different terminology depending upon which side we are discussing. We use terms such as “shock and awe,” or phrases such as “discouraging home front moral.” My goal, here, is simply to question our own tactics to make sure that I believe we are acting properly. “Question” is the key; I did not say condemn nor approve.

My favorite fish? Lake Erie Perch, not Ocean Pearch. Yumm! There is a small restaurant that serves “all you can eat” Lake Erie Perch. No offense taken. It is always appropriate for citizens to question tactics and motives; it isn’t so much a right as it should be a responsibility.
Landing troops on foreign soil should always give one pause. Its a crying shame Congress never got around to declaring the war. We were attacked, and the first Gulf War never really ended ( that would be hard since it too was never actually declared ) the argument could be made that we were defending American interests ( this sound callous, but look at the upheaval over the recent gas price increases; we DO have an interest in Iraq, and Afghanistan is were bin Laden had his base – yes I know he is a Saudi citizen – with friends like the Saudis we don’t need enemies ).
There are other ways of seeing to our interests; methods which do not put American armed forces in harm’s way; which was the basis for my original question: What is the difference between a pirate and a privateer. A pirate is serving his own interests. A privateer has a license ( a Letter of Marque and Reprisal; mentioned in the Constitution ) to conduct what may seem like piracy to some but with restrictions ad with oversight. The issue of such a letter to mercenaries could protect our interests without putting the lives and safety of our military ( whose members don’t have the ability to opt out – many are actually being involuntarily extended, which would be okay in time of war, but as I mentioned, we have NOT declared war ).
Hmm… It says Scotland and Virginia. I am in NC. I wonder if this has anything to do with us?

I find these kinds of responses such fascinating glimpses into the human psyche. I’m sure Tryant, you are no more a tyrant than you are a psychopath. It’s often difficult to bring our lives into congruence with our deepest values, when society has conditioned us to live in a manner that is inconsistent with our compassionate values. Comments of indiscriminate killing can be a reflection of such cognitive dissonance.

Yep,,or maybe simple hunger could do it all on it’s own!
There is a reason humans have a taste for flesh, namely,”evolution”. Somewhere down the line folks had to eat meat to survive and continue their genetic contribution, just like many other organisms. If Man wasn’t capable of “higher thinking then there would be few Vegans of the “by choice” variety.
I simply choose to ignore the fact that eating meat means death for todays entre’,someday, when I die,the meek will inherit My flesh and the natural cycle will continue,so be it.
Then it is understood by bsomebody that
failing to act is also unacceptable, especially
in our name. I don’t give a crap what those
who side with our enemies have got to say.

it ever work to prevent wars from happening?

I was still in the Navy for the first Gulf war. The trouble most had was seeing how Saddam thought he could win what was obviously an unwinnable war. The disconnect was that Saddam didn’t think he needed to win; just to make himself look strong by standing up to us, would make us look weaker. That wouldn’t seem to you or me to be a victory for him, but that’s what he wanted. He also was not handicapped by having to honor anything he himself promised. It is also interesting to note he hated many of his own citizens even more than he hated the US.
Wars will probably NEVER be be completely prevented by diplomacy. Diplomacy only works between rational people. When someone believes he ( or she ) is destined to be a leader, nothing short of a bullet ( or similar ordnance ) will dissuade him. No amount of lost lives will be important because he is not rational. No cost is too high because he won’t ( directly ) pay it. Those who die on his behalf will be promised anything ( 72 virgins is always popular ) but they will rarely get what they think they deserve ( do you believe the 9/11 terrorists are in heaven with any number of virgins ? ).
Diplomacy often works well with rational people and should be the first thing tried. When it doesn’t work, a war is almost always inevitable, and rational people will die fighting irrational people.

Someone asked me if I limited my amount of fish. I said no. I found out that this methyl mercury (the organic mercury compound found in fish) is not to the levels that could be harmful to humans. You have to eat a lot of fish to get harmful levels in your system. I have heard over the years it’s just a big scare tactic for many reasons. I always seem to find big business behind these fears. I guess its so they can get you to stop buying fish and buy cow or other meats. Its a war out there folks. Check out http://www.mercuryfacts.org for more information. So I will continue to eat fish for I believe the omega 3s are well worth it. I just wish people would stop the real source of pollution. Run off…
I always thought Ann was the hottest. Something about a chick jammin’ on a guitar really does it for me. I could party with Joan Jett, also.

How about the word Manhandle. It is somewhat obvious, but I would like to know when it came into modern usage. Being such a gender laden word, I wonder what the future holds for the word in our increasingly politically correct society.

Hi Marina,I have a special request for you.It is a conumdrum that has plagued mankind for forty years. There are endless blogs on this subject. What,in your opinion,is the meaning of the phrase “A whiter shade of pale” as heard in Procol Harum’s 1967 hit of the same name. This could really use a new set of eyes and I can think of no better set than yours!C’mon everyone help me out here. The lyrics, minus the last two versus(only performed live)are as follows:
“We skipped the light fandango turned cartwheels ‘cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick but the crowd called out for more
the room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away
when we called out for another drink the waiter brought a tray
And so it was later as the miller told his tale
that her face,at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale
She said “There is no reason and the truth is plain to see”
but I wandered though my playing cards and would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open they might have just as well’ve been closed.”
Please note the “miller” verse has been perfomed as “the mirror told it’s tale”.I have read everything from it’s about cocaine to death to the Titantic or getting a girl drunk and having your way with her.I would love to see you investigate this and give your opinion. This may require a long lesson and I for one will be more than willing to sit through it,anyboby else?Help….please!!!

http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody
I do not know if this applies to Procol Harum or not. (Did he actually write the song, or just perform it?) I used to spend alot of time and energy trying to interpret many U2 songs. I found out years later, that Bono put most of his emphasis on the sound of the words, the metre, the poetic quality. He admitted that many of the songs began with an idea, but his writing soon left that and headed towards an accidentally nonsensical track. Bono claims he did not truly understand how to write lyrics until he spent some time with Bob Dylan in the late 1990s. I also know that the Beatles, especially John, would often intentionally write nonsensical lyrics, just to rebel in their own way. Maybe “Whiter Shade” does have some deep meaning, maybe not. Perhaps it is something so personal to the writer that you will never know. I have resolved myself to let my own interpretation stand; it is art, after all. The beauty of true art is that it touches each one of us in its own unique way.

Never had Mahi Mahi. I’m sure I’d like it; eaten seafood all my life. My favorite “fish” of all time is fresh, as in freshly caught, blue or yellow catfish. The fresh water variety. I mean you catch it, skin and clean it right then and there, and get busy over an open fire. Yeah, baby. That’s eatin’!
thetigtig
Hi bsomebody,I totally agree and being someone who has nearly every Beatles album,I don’t want to go there.LOL
As for AWSOP,I have read many blogs from “palers” and thought it would be interesting to hear her opinion.I have read that a bandmember or friend of the band was at a party and saw a girl near comatose and said “that girl has turned a whiter shade of pale.”
I hope you and everyone else has a wonderful Thanksgivig!!!!!!!!

Hi Marina
Would you please tell us the origin of the term “Fortnight”?
It’s uses more frequently in Great Britain, but I still hear it from time to time in the States. I can’t see the connection between the word and its meaning.
To add further “beyond the pale” is
another form often found in literature.
As near as I am able to infer from this
usage, this phrase means to go past
the point of the reasonable into madness.
Out of the realm of human cognitive reality,
as a god gone insane. eg: throwing people
into volcanoes to appease a god goes
beyond the pale of humanity.
Gobble gobble! Happy Thanksgiving

There is an interview with the author/composer where he answers your question. The meaning to the lyrics is nonsense, no hidden meaning, no symbolism just a bunch of word strung together. Look for it in Rolling Stone Magazine or some other rock publication.
Funny! That last cow did a

And why should you find any more meaning to it than the ceiling flying away? You can’t find sense ineverything/I>, even if there’s a Wikipedia article on it.

Jonesing for a cheeseburger! That was fairly well made, but I have to say ijustine’s other vids are rather thin in the content department. I don’t think she’s going to walk the red carpet. Or a pink one. Maybe a white one that was once washed with a pink one. An old pink one.

Back in the 60s-70s(and beyond)Lysergic Acid Diathelamide,LSD,was widely used and could explain the conumdrum, the audience was trippin hard so everything made perfect sense.
I also agree with bsomebody and contend that,in many cases,if not *all* cases,music/poetry is interpretive. I realize(difficult to do after sooo much acid  )You want Marina’s take on it,as do We all, but,Ya got what Ya got for now Man. Happy to help.

Hi,because every poem or piece of art is interpreted differently without knowing what the artist was thinking or if they were even thinking anything.

Yepper,Orlova means Eagle,My Ex GF had an Uncle named Orlova back in the old country, said He was an important military man. Of course She may have thought that story would help Her get married/citizenship,didn’t work. The test of time was the only thing that would have garnered Her a marriage to Me,My Mom didn’t raise any dummies Ya know.:)

She used to post/reply,the fact that it has become nearly non-existant here at HFW is sad to say the least. She needs to stand at the mirror and kick Herself in the ass for this great travesty. She got thousands of folks hooked, then, clammed up. TAs are great but just don’t compare to the attention of One so beautiful,I bet even the TAs agree,,,or lie.

It is “divorce”,,,drags on forever and a day.
Personally (paraphrasing an email I wrote to Che Volay) when I don’t understand him, I just try to be understanding of him (or, precisely, his condition). If it really bothers ppl that much, I would reccommend an ultimatum – a direct request to cease and desist abherrent behaviour (include examples), or be removed.
But, again, speaking for myself, though I have noticed a recent spike in frequency and my weird-o-meter is pegged off-scale-high, as long as he doesn’t change his gravatar, it’s all I need to see to scroll my mouse wheel a bit further. He has done me no harm, and I have no ill will toward him, but do take pity on him for his condition. Reminds me of the quote: “I cried because I had no shoes. Until I met a man who had no feet.” I think of the times I stood ambulance duty at the Special Olympics. This is not ancient Rome where children born with any deficiency are subject to summary execution. Certainly, whatever his condition is not of his own choosing. Has every avenue been exhausted to attempt to kindly and directly modify his behaviour at least enough to make him tolerable?

Fins and Jimmy Buffet in the same sentence makes me think of his lovely old Grumman Albatross seaplane, one of the prettiest aircraft ever built, named “The Hemisphere Dancer”.
She was mistaken for a drug-runner’s plane and shot at by the Jamaican authorities on one occasion, which inspired Jimmy to write the song Jamaica Mistaica.

Have you ever wondered why foreigners have trouble with the English Language?
Let’s face it
English is a stupid language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France.
We sometimes take English for granted
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly
Boxing rings are square
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
If writers write, how come fingers don’t fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth
Shouldn’t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth
If the teacher taught,
Why didn’t the preacher praught.
If a vegetarian eats vegetables
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes!
English was invented by people, not computers
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn’t a race at all)
That is why
When the stars are out they are visible
But when the lights are out they are invisible
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts
But when I wind up this observation,
It ends.

A Polish man moved to the USA and married an American girl.
Although his English was far from perfect, they got along very well
until one day he rushed into a lawyer’s office and asked him if he could
arrange a divorce for him. The lawyer said that getting a divorce would
depend on the circumstances, and asked him the following questions:
L: Have you any grounds?
P: Yes, an acre and half and nice little home.
L: No, I mean what is the foundation of this case?
P: It made of concrete.
L: I don’t think you understand. Does either of you have a real grudge?
P: No, we have carport, and not need one.
L: I mean. What are your relations like?
P: All my relations still in Poland.
L: Is there any infidelity in your marriage?
P: We have hi-fideli ty stereo and good DVD player.
L: Does your wife beat you up?
P: No, I always up before her.
L: Is your wife a nagger?
P: No, she white.
L: Why do you want this divorce?
P: She going to kill me.
L: What makes you think that?
P: I got proof.
L: What kind of proof?
P: She going to poison me. She buy a bottle at drugstore and put on
shelf in bathroom.
I can read, and it says: Polish Remover.

Yes, my family likes Walleye, too. Had good times on South Bass, but better on Middle Bass at Lonz Winery when I was a Tween. The young adults would loosen the restraint on the champagne bottles and the corks would pop bouncing off a high ceiling. Great cheers would follow. (Lonz closed to the public when too many people celebrated on a balcony which collapsed and killed some people.) My dad took me along as the designated driver. He and his friend would swish around the 16′ boat with wine bottles in hand as I navigated the choppy waters and bailed the boat with a tin can at the same time. Cheers!
