There are no real werewolves ( just some REALLY hairy men ).
Also, there are no real ( ‘living’ ) mummiesor vampires.
We may be heading towards a ‘Frankenstein’ type but cloning seems easier.
We could also see technology for an ( electronic ) invisable man ( clothing with cameras and transmitters that show what is in your background on your clothes so you can’t be seen ).
Happy Halloween Eve to all.

No. Should I?
While we’re off the subject, what about the way some words are spelled differently in England and the US, like “humour” and “humor”? Why is that?
Also, why to the English sometimes add an “er” sound to the ends of words that don’t have an “r” at the end? You know, like “idea” becomes “ide-er”.
Thanks a lot and keep up your fine lessons.

The main problem with invisibility is that for the person (I’m assuming you’re not referring to an object) to be completely invisible, he/she would not be able to see. If there is something covering the entire person displaying the image behind him/her then no light could reach the eyes. If light were allowed to reach the eyes then the eyes would be visible. I guess there would have to be a trade-off, should such technology be pursued.

Lycanthropy and werewolves, yet another good Halloween theme.

The scariest fright this Halloween is probably your real life. The economic crisis hurts everyone — lost homes, lost jobs, lost retirement, lost faith.
Congress will reconvene in November to start crafting solutions to our biggest economic problems. Help us make sure those solutions work for you.

As small as cameras are getting today, there would be plenty of space to see through. Think about the ‘murals’ you can get for the rear window of a truck or some busses. You can see the image, and you ( on the outside ) might have trouble seeing inside, but the driver can still see through it to observe traffic.
http://www.youtube.com/user/dezdkado Dezdkado
Nope… no belief in werewolves, unless you mean that certain family of acrobats from Mexico.
orion_ss1
A lot of words had their spelling changed INTENTIONALLY to separate us from the Brits after the revolution. Theater from theatre.
The idea – ide-er is just an accent ( think of Boston where they leave out the r’s in car and garage and recycle them elsewhere.

Hello Marina,
Great show as always.
Thank you
Werewolves are my favorite type of versipellis.
Here’s a man that knows a bit more about Werewolves

Dear ÑÐ¾Ð²ÐµÑ€ÑˆÐµÐ½Ð½Ð°Ñ Marina, You wore nice underwear under your short-shorts! For your homework, I don’t think there are werewolves, either.
Marina, what is your weight? I think you weigh about 127 lbs. If you have a bathroom scale, please weigh yourself in the morning after you finish relieving yourself. If you weigh yourself before eating or drinking anything and weigh yourself undressed, you’ll get your lightest possible weight for the day. No, you don’t have to make a video of this! You’re so slender, you probably don’t need a bathroom scale! (But I imagined how you might use one!)
Your dear student, seesixcm6

Hello Dezdkado,
I clicked your name and I was wondering what you were holding in your hands.

Congress may TRY to craft solutions but I’m willing to bet they make the problems worse ( throwing money on the problem is a good example of a bad solution ).
The best first step to solving the problems of today is to put the responsible ( or irresponsible ) CEOs in jail. A CEO that can make money for his/her shareholders may well be worth a million dollar salary and/or bonus. A CEO that manipulates the company to generate millions for himself at shareholders expense has committed fraud, if nothing else. Just being a CEO does NOT ewntitle you to millions.
Banks that have loaned money to people who were bad risks and without adequate collateral deserve to go under and their shareholders should be clamoring for justice.
Having the government take over bad loans is just plain stupid.
Individuals who took out loans that they knew ( or should have known ) they couldn’t afford deserve bankruptcy.
I have had several mortgages, and never missed a payment. So because I planned well, I get to subsidize ( with my tax dollars ) the bailout of those who planned poorly? Call me a heartless SOB, but I have a problem with that.
I have carefully planned for my retirement, up to the events we are currently seeing. But NO ONE can plan for a total meltdown, which is what will happen unless the CEO’s who made millions by screwing up so badly go to jail so that other CEO’s may want to try working for their money.

Yeah I do as ancient greeks that worshipped dyionisis were considered vampires and werewolves.
I will only relate to HotForWords, since this is hotforwords.com and not some political show.
I think that the economic crisis is mirrored in Marina’s show by the fact that she can’t afford full clothing anymore, and I also suspect she sold her furniture, thus doing her videos from the carpet!

Hi boss…
1 question.. if I may. Are you down with the whole Halloween holiday? :)
okay4now
But, late on a still night, alone, walking through mist covered woods looking at strange dark vague shadows and you feel (no, you know that you’re being watched &/or followed) then the answer would be ‘yes’. Of course, we can talk ourselves into anything…
In my country we don’t have Halloween, and I think it’s a pity because it’s a chance for kids to have some fun and for grown ups to have parties. :D So if this means believing in something as far fetched as werewolves, I’m all for it! :P
On the other hand, I could just go ahead and have a party anyway, but good luck convincing my boss I can’t come to work the next day.(since it’s not a regular holiday here)
So.. enjoy, and make the most of it ;)
misguidedsoul.com
Hey Marina Keeping In the spirit of Halloween.
When we die some of us will just lie and suponify.
What does that word mean and where does it come from?
Thanks you’re the best!

My favorite holiday! or actually it’s more of an event (real answer below). Hope I’m not too much of a buzz-kill for yah. Still too funny to see some thug in a rubber werewolf mask (that he just threw on) walking around growling and thinking he’s ‘got the H. spirit’. The greatest thing about Halloween is 1. seeing other people portray their fantasies 2. see the limited fantasies of others (limited imaginations).
okay4now
I live in Paris. The next day is All Saints day, which is a holiday…A good Halloween costum for you would be to go to work on the 31st dressed as your boss–now, that would be when the fun really starts :!:
Did you know that werewolves come out to feed only once a month? And even so, they still are faster, stronger and more stealthy then us humans. They hunt alone and hide their prey after ingesting the meet. In some books, these animals are shown as vicious stalking type hunters, in others they are shown as part human, part animal, shifting between the two shapes when a full moon is present.
Interesting myth if you ask me… I’d watch any modern movie based on this. ;)
I’m gobsmacked that you of all people (and not your site’s support team) helped me out with my password fiasco! Thank you very much for going out of your way in assisting me.
And on that note, I’d like to ask you for the origin of the word “gobsmacked”…definately a word not used much anymore these days.
Why is it that the words READ ( as in your reading a book ) and READ ( as in you have already finished it ) are spelled the same?, same with Wind ( blowing air ) and wind ( to wind up )
Marina since your new to Twitter, have a hint.
If you want to private message one of your followers without it showing up on your main page, use http://twitter.com/direct_messages/

I just thought you knew that, it’s a little bit of history that is dear to me. France presented Romania with a copy of the Arch of Triumph (of course, a slightly smaller version). Also awarding Bucharest with the honorary title of Little Paris.
I’m sorry if I came off like someone with an itch, I’m only tired that’s all :)
okay4now
Totally cool! I’ve heard Bucharest is truely beautiful. Someday I hope you really get to experience Halloween in full. I going to L.A for ten days but not until the 1st, and there is no Halloween here–so we’ll miss it together–cheers.

Dear Miss Orlova,
This is really coincidental that your class today is on Werewolf. On the way home from work I was thinking: What if there were Dog Men? Not even connecting the dots to werewolf. On some planet maybe there are Dog Men. Werewolves are very rare, even more rare then Vampires. I smell a Werewolf…shit…looks over his shoulders…That’s enough to scare you away, they need to shower obviously.

Dear Marina Orlova,
I don’t know if you are aware of this or not. When where Adam in the Bible is kicked out of Eden with his Wif, Eve, they then have to Wear clothes right? Adam had then to till the Soil until and even through himself being weary. Maybe out there under the moon, when he was wanting to be at home with his Wif, long after evening, he then became a werewolf. Like, “Where’s Wif”, right.? HOWWWWLLLLLLLLLL!!!
Another Interesting Fact: Male Wolves will not Howl at the Moon unless and only with the Shewolf.

Werewolf? No problemo. Nothing a T-888 (an infiltration model i.e. a Terminator designed to pass for human) programmed by yours truly can’t deal with.
Anyway, I think I might have heard of the origin of the word before, though I have almost forgotten it completely in the midst of time. Thanks for reminding me of this fascinating word.
By the way Marina, this might be of interest to a philologist like you:
In Chinese, sex maniacs (i.e. men so obsessed with sex that ethical concerns such as mutual consent mean nothing to them) are called “colour wolves” (pardon me, this is a direct translation of the 2 Chinese characters used). East
Asian languages such as Chinese and Japanese have no standardized alphabetical systems such as the A-Z in English, the Cyrillic characters in your native language (Russian, I hope I’ve not named it wrong), etc. They are based on pictorial symbols, which evolved from what were literally pictures to the much more simplified bit still relatively complicated and massive library of pictograms and their combination to create different words.
Interestingly, it seems that wolves are used as symbolism for sex crazed men in both the East and West.
I’ll like hear your expert thought and opinions on this, Marina.
CampKohler
Marina, the link to this site in the YouTube header for this lesson has an error. “http” is doubled up, killing the link. I’m surprised someone has not spotted it sooner, perhaps because they all come here to view the videos. I use YouTube first so that you get your count bumped up one and then click the link to frolic amongst these whackos… uh, I mean loyal fans. Moral: whenever you provide a link, always test it before you consider the work done. You never know when a typogoofical error will creep up and do you in.
PS*: If Kobe is wandering around in the background when you are shooting, your edits will make him seem to move at the speed of light.
—-
*Funny how “PS” still is an apt abbreviation, even though we have moved from snail-mail to E-mail.
CampKohler
I have never heard of the sex-crazed aspect in werewolves before. I can understand that with respect to Eastern culture, but I would think that if it was in Western culture, I would have run across it at least once in uh, (ahem) several decades.
Since you seem to know something of Chinese, I have some questions. I am very interested in how languages consisting of pictograms cope with new terminology. If someone hears of or invents, for example, fiber optics, they could put together the characters for light and tube and it would be apt. But what of others, e.g. the lay public? Will they be able to “get it” from those characters, especially if the characters have more than one meaning. In English, for example, light could mean a photon stream or not having much weight and a tube could be a vacuum tube* or a subway. How would the pictogram guy deal with the permutations? Do they have to be taught the color wolf = sex maniac? But we don’t always combine existing words to make new terms; we can just invent new words or make acronyms.
What happens when the new term hits the streets? Is it always accompanied by a brief explanation until the public is used to it? Is there some central authority that approves or disseminates them? How does the average Joe know what light tube means? At least in English, a new word will be unfamiliar and tell the reader “this is a new word” (unless the reader is unsure of himself and attributes it simply to his own ignorance). What does the pictogram reader think?
Take laser. It used to be LASER, an acronym that morphed from MASER when the frequency was upped from microwaves to light. When it was MASER, the techies read about it and knew what it stood for, but not Joe Sixpack. Slowly laser caught on, what with sci-fi, Star Wars, hand-held pointers, gunsights, etc., without Joe ever knowing what LASER actually stood for (and still doesn’t!). Is that how it works with pictograms? Enquiring minds want to know.

Then stop it until you do. You could substitute “Yadda, yadda, yadda” meanwhile. And if you have the same problem with that one, try “and so forth,” “for what it’s worth,” “in my humble opinion,” “if you will” or “but what do I know.” One of those should work for you. I mean, just until you find out.
CampKohler
And don’t forget my favorite, the octothorp, an etymologistical nightmare.

I always wondered where the word “Pawn” came from. I have heard the word many times and even used it a few times on occasion, but have no idea where it comes from.
CampKohler
jt, I wonder if Marina does it all, even if everything is signed with her name. (I got such a message when I first started.) However, there are little glitches by those whose second language is English, e.g. she says “1900s” instead of “the 1900s.” (These are the kinds of things that get spies killed. I don’t see how, even with the most intensive training, one could eliminate them entirely from one’s speech, such that one would have perfect confidence in a foreign land.) Now take a look at the Privacy Policy page. Things like “…track user’s movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.” would not seem to dance trippingly* on the Ukranean tongue. I smell at least one lawyer “behind the curtain,” and where a lawyer lurks, can techs and administrators be far behind?
Personally, I don’t see why such a charade would be needed. We all understand that running an operation like HFW is not a one-man band. I suspect sitting around the kitchen floor tickling Kobe is a luxury that can be afforded only if the nuts and bolts of fixing broken stuff can be delegated to Webmasters and the like. You know, her people. You think she has people, don’t you? Of course she does. Their names and pictures should be on her people page. Yes, they should.
CampKohler
Forgot closure on the asterisk (a pet peeve of mine, too).
*There’s one of those words that almost seem to be an opposite of itself. It’s from some English guy.
CampKohler
Yeah, she fixed that in between belly-scratches for Kobe.

Heh, I can see how the time delay might make you wonder, but the notion of accusing me of having something naughty in my hands just made me laugh. That you corrected yourself made it all the more funny. I wish I had caught your question before I went back to my books.
Yes, that red juice just seeps into my fingers and lips when I eat pomegranates… it’s kinda creepy as it makes me look like I have blood on my hands and my mouth… I guess that fits with the werewolf motif.
The Immortals… the Persian elite infantry… Herodotus also mentions that their spear counterweights were gold apples, but I think this is a confusion of the name of the pomegranate (which means seeded apple). It’s too bad that Herodotus never mentioned why the Persians used that particular symbol for their counterweights. I was always biased against the Persians in my early studies. I imagined being a Spartan warrior facing certain death, or one of Themistocles’ Athenian naval officers. Persian culture was exciting and different, but the marriage practices of the nobility gave me chills… I believe Cambyses married his own sister to secure his claim to the throne… yuck… just like the Pharaohs of Egypt.
The symbolism I think is most interesting is in the Judaic belief that the pomegranate was the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden. In this, it’s heart-like interior and blood-red fruit makes a lot of sense. It has more meaning than this in Judaism, but I find that to be most intriguing.
I was also amazed to discover today that the word grenade originates with the pomegranate.
Thanks for the video share… made me glad that I’m not as old as Hef. Made me remember my early teens when I was in love with a girl named Missy Cleveland.

Marina, while I was in the armed services we sometimes referred to grenades as pineapples. However, I have learned that grenades have a link to pomegranates. I understand the grenade’s appearance as a pineapple, but how and why is the grenade like a pomegranate?

“Jesus H Christ”
Hi Marina, In Australia we get a lot of US T.V. and movies, quit often someone in these shows will use the phrase, “Jesus H Christ”. Please can you find the meaning of this “H” in the middle of this phrase, I have asked several yanks that I have met over here but none could tell me what this “H” means.
It’s just a made up middle initial for humorous effect as an expletive as though the name was that of an ordinary person, i.e. one of no historical importance. I once new a guy who regularly combined this with the crutch expletive, “Jesus H. Christ on a crutch!” That was in the 70s and he could be dead by now. (St. Peter: “WHO ON A WHAT?”)
Perhaps if he comes back, he will be required to use “NMI” for his identity card or driver’s license.
http://www.youtube.com/user/dezdkado Dezdkado
This is one theory… some of it is true, some of it is plausible.
It recalls the H in the IHS logo emblazoned on much early church paraphernalia. IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator [Latin for "Jesus savior of men"]) dates from the earliest years of Christianity, being an abbreviation of “Jesus” in classical Latin characters. The earlier Greek Christogram is “IHC”, derived from the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, iota-eta-sigma or ΙΗΣ. The Greek pronunciation is “Iesous,” with the E sound being represented by the character eta, which looks like an H. When the symbol passed to Christian Romans, for whom an H was an H, the unaccountable character eventually became accepted as “Jesus’ middle initial.”
http://www.youtube.com/user/dezdkado Dezdkado
Personally I prefer “Jumping Jesus on a Pogo-stick!”

Nice to see that you are interested in cultures and languages other than your own too.
Anyway, I figured there is a little misunderstanding about the “colour wolf” terminology. It has to do with wolves, yes, but not werewolves specifically. “Colour” in Chinese has multiple meanings that are actually very unrelated to each other. Of course, colour means colour in Chinese too, but in my specified context, colour refers to:
Carnal, sexual, etc.
You get the picture.
As for terms for new things say, new technology, it depends on the exact device. For instance, fiber optics are called “guang xian” (approximation of actual pronunciation, since I have no Chinese keyboard to type them out properly), which translated literally means “guang” = light and “xian” = line, string, rope, etc. basically, “line of light”. Technically in English, we call them optical waveguides (yes, I am very much involved in Engineering), which in its bare essence no different from the Chinese term. Photons are called “Guang Zi” in Chinese, which is just Chinese for a “light particles”.
Other terms, such as LASER, aren’t so well translated in Chinese, however. In such a case, the Chinese term is simply created by grouping Chinese characters that sound similar to the individual syllables of the English word(s). LASER in Chinese, believe it or not, sounds VERY similar to the original word itself.
I am very pleased at your curiosity, though it’s obviously impossible to tell you everything I know in this limited space. Besides, I’m only participating out of my free time and I’m usually quite busy. Chinese Mandarin (THE Chinese Language that all Chinese speak) is a very complex language, full of nuances, expressions, etc. that date from very recent times to as far back in Chinese history that we know to that (about 5000 years).
tok-715
Another thing:
If a Chinese character were to be used for the meaning of its original intention, it is in fact rich in symbolism which in itself tells you its meaning. I’ll like to go into detail, but lack of a Chinese Keyboard isn’t helping.
To get an idea of how numerous the basic pictograms and possible combination of them, it was actually the Chinese that invented the printing press many years before the west, though unfortunately, unlike the west, they did not have a habit of recording and championing their inventions as the west usually does (until very recent history, e.g. Beijing Olympics, where they showed off Chinese inventions such as the South pointing compass, etc.). The real reason they dropped its use was that unlike Alphabetical languages such as English, Russian, Arabian, etc., which has a definite character set of reasonable number and where every possible word is just a combo of them, Chinese is based on many pictograms combined to form a character or sometimes, just a single pictogram, depending on the exact character. In short, there were too many fundamental printing blocks needed to be practical using purely mechanical presses. It wasn’t completely thrown away, but never achieved the widespread use of printing in the west, e.g., news printing, until quite recently.

Marina,
You’ve done a lesson on golf but what about the word FORE?
apollo
Of course I do. Since I was a boy, I believed they were the only being that the devil could create and send into the world. I guess it jus seems so much more real than a blood-sucking freak. Interestingly, i found that I would lay awake at night thinking about things and bears would come to mind since they were around the house a s a child. Than i would link my next thoughts to werewolves. i even had a dream a s a boy thta invooved being bitten by a wolf. i guess the encounter with wild dogs as a boy later on would have an effect on me. Strong enough for me to base a book on it written while in prison. It involves shapeshifting which I got cued in on when i watched a movie by a former playboy bunny named Julia Cialinni. Its almost finisherd. it has shamans and wolves and shapeshifting. Its alot more credible than anything else and I’ve even tried it. Its the idea that one can enter the being of an animal in the reak world when one begins to fall asleep. its a cool thought and idea. Like i said, its something Ive tried and found it to work really well. It definately is a trip. Peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marina, great series of videos for Halloween. What wil be your costume?
On a substantive point, isn’t “virilis” derived from the more simple word in latin “vir” meaning “man”? Are adjectives always derived from nouns? Or put another way, do nouns always come first? That would be a cool lesson by the way, something meta-philogical.
I don’t believe in werewolfs. But I am beginning to believe in magical dogs as I watch Gorby (your communist dog) or is it Kobe disappear and reappear in your videos.

Chemikal, I should have restructured my original comment, as it was copied from an e-mail to me. I am not associated with Consumers’ Union except by receiving updates about what is going on in Congress. This organization is part of Consumer Reports, a good resource for unbiased information on products.
Consumers Union lets you know what issues are before congress and what their implications are to the consumer. They provided links to your appropriate representatives and form letters to send regarding such issues.
As far as Marina is concerned, I miss her kitchen table productions, too. I hope the repo-man hasn’t visited. It may be time to leave the high rent district, if so.

Привет Марина! I was wondering if you knew the origin of the saying: “You cannot have your cake and eat it too” ? Is it a Russian joke? I know the word for “have – еÑть” and “eat – еÑть” are spelled the same in Russian, is that where it comes from?
Thanks,

Marina, Never has anyone made philology so interesting.
A word came up that has three meanings at dictionary.com , the word is “Wrangler“. In the USA people think of a cowboy, it can also be someone who argues, and in the UK it is someone who got the highest marks, of their year, in the exam for their maths degree at Cambridge University. All very different, but is there a connection? Which came first?
Thanks and kisses.

Dear Marina,
I’m sorry to say that your German spelling can be improved. The German word is “Werwolf”.
This word has a bad taste as Hitler used this name for an organisation whose members murdered the mayor of Aachen.

Making an observation, it looks like that Marina may have had an editing oversight as the Dutch word was also incorrect also using the same letters; i.e. “wulf” instead of “wolf”. I’m embarrassed to say, I do that all of the time. It’s too easy to copy and paste, but then I keep forgetting to make the letter changes. The agony of technology.
Dear Teach – Your new YT page is FANTASTIC! I love the profile pic from your calendar. Beautiful! Have a blast in Hawaii. Keep us updated – lots of pics!!! If I ever get Twitter to LET ME LOG IN TO THE DAMN THING I’ll try to follow your exploits there, too. Love you! Happy bikini Halloween!
Additional ancillary tidbits about “wulf” and “wolf”.
Generally, versions of the word Wolf with an “o” indicates the German origins and with a “u” indicates English roots.
However, the word “Wulf or Wulff” does appear in German as a variant of wolf. It may be patronymic in origin being derived from the first name of a father. In this case, Wulf is associated with the very popular German first name Wolfgang and simply means “son of Wolfgang”. No doubt the initial bearer of the name was noted for his qualities of strength and power.

Marina, when pronouncing the word “gnostic” the “g” is silent. Why is the “g” not silent in the words “agnostic”, “diagnosis”, “prognosis”, etc.? All that is occurring is the addition of a prefix to the base, modifying the base meaning… right?
Gnostic, from the Greek gnosis (knowledge) < from gnostikos (knowing, able to discern) < from gnostos (knowable) < from gignoskein (to learn, to come to know)

Thanks for the info. Now how do new terms get recognized by the public? Set aside technology and just talk about new general speech. In English a new word like blog gets pronounced and the listener could figure out how to write it without too much difficulty. How does the listener know which pictograms to use for a new word without the aid of spelling? Going the other way, how does the reader know how to pronounce a new combination? It seems like the entire population would spend half their time keep up with new stuff, unless of course, pictograms, by their nature, inhibit new stuff so that the language changes very slowly.
I can’t imagine what it would be like without spelling.

Where I’m from we’d say, from your usual comments, that you “have a burr under your saddle.” Sometimes you can be marginally amusing, though.

As I said, some English terms are translated by simply mimicking the sound of their syllables, which severely lessens the need for new pictograms. Changes are still made to this date, though they are usually changes in pronunciation and very occasionally, a slight change of pictogram form.
If it wasn’t for a fairly recent invention known as “pinyin”, which depicted pronunciation of individual Chinese characters in the form of alphabets (e.g. fish in Chinese is pronounced very closely to “yu” and that’s also very close to how it is described in pinyin). Some characters can have their sounds guessed out from their form provided you have fundamental knowledge of the constituent pictograms used to form them, but most of the time, a sound is just arbitrarily assigned and you simply can’t know unless you are told.
And yes, one can waste most of their lifetime trying to memorize numerous characters. Lacks of simple alphabet and words that are just combos of these alphabets does make the creation of completely new characters extremely unlikely, but 5000 years of history is more than enough time to create almost every character that will ever be necessary in practice.
