I agree. I also believe that we (USA) are suffering from long-term abuse, greed, and irresponsibility. If this continues, market confidence will continue to drop, and so will the market. In the long term, this can be good for investing, but what affects us, affects the rest of the world… it’s a global economy.

You’d be a fool NOT to be worried, but if you study the stock market, you should be prepared to weather out the storm.

Yale Hirsch’s book ‘Don’t Sell Stocks on Monday’ shows that most years have an up market. Obviously there are exceptions. If you look at 5-year windows, there are few where the market was lower at the end than at the beginning, even fewer 10 year down windows. I don’t think there has yet been a down 20 year window.

This is a tremendous buying opportunity. History shows that when most people are selling is when you should be buying. Yes, the market may go a little lower, but when it starts to go up you’ll want to be invested. If you are afraid to pick stocks, look at mutual funds. If you want to beat the market, you’ll probably miss more years than you’ll hit, so I like index funds. Fund expenses are usually lower ( less thinking since the fund buys the stocks that are in the indexes – indices for the purist ), and you can expect to be with the market.

Buy low, sell high. ( Its been tried the other way and it doesn’t work well )

For your homework, no, I’m not worried about bad economic times because we will recover faster here than in any other area. Silicon Valley had already shrunk from many layoffs over the years. The remaining firms are very active and innovative. Intel and AMD provide more new and better computer chips. Apple continues to invent new categories of products like the iPod and the iPhone, with more to come. The movie and TV industry keep producing regardless of the economy. In fact movies did well in the depression years of the 30′s. So, the US will recover first and also will carry up smaller, weaker economies along with us. :grin:

Dez we hunt bear here with pistols. Now we do carry a shot gun, but most of the black bears can be put down with just a hand gun. In NC it is legal to hunt with a 22 rifle even deer, but I think it’s very cruel to the animal as it doesn’t put him down on the first shot and you have to track him until he bleeds out or eventually dies days later where you can’t find him.

I have..with a brown bear, all alone over 5 kilometers deep in to a woods picking mushrooms and locating beaver dens… it’s scary, especially when you’re 16 years old :mrgreen: man… I’m getting shivers all over when I think back..

Let me tell you Fox bear meat is good. Better than deer plus you can have a very nice bear skin rug on the floor. The minim I carry is a 40 caliber pistol or a nine which ever is the lightest. My heaviest is a Beretta 92 F and my lightest is a Taurus 40 caliber with the polymer base and stainless steel upper. Never go hunting without a back up of some kind.

Actually, I play the bear with equal facility as I play the bull. Only I can only mentally do one at the time or the other. If I enter multiple positions, thay have to be all the same – all short or all long – for ease of escape should things go other than I anticipate. For example in a short position, if I sell to get out, I will double my position instead, so I enter only one type of position in multiple instances.

Never knew the origin of the terms, but always got them confused till I learned to distinguish them by remembering that bulls strike up with their horns, and bears strike down with their claws :grin:

I took an accounting 101 course at a junior college with my girl friend and the instructor bragged how he ‘invested’ conservatively with CD’s and money markets, and wouldn’t even consider bonds or bond funds, much less the stock market. I asked him what the current interest rate was and then what the current inflation rate was. When he answered, I said ‘Oh, so you’re only losing about 1% per year.’ He frowned and had no answer. I then asked him what he thought the banks did with his deposits. Another ‘deer in the headlights’ look.

The current theory is to have about your age in years invested as a percent, in bonds. So, if you are 25, 25% of your investments should be in bonds or bond funds. Some people have a set percent in ‘cash’, which is a good idea for emergencies or for investing in times like this. 10% for emergencies is a good rule of thumb, but each person’s situation WILL vary. But the rest should be in stocks ( NOT options or futures unless you REALLY know what you are doing, and then only with money you can afford to lose ).

I have been investing on my own for 30 years, including options but never with futures. I have no other qualifications to give advice other than experience ( most happy, some sad ). I have no children but I am advising my nephews and nieces to invest NOW.

DO NOT BUY ON MARGIN. If you know someone who has invested on margin, ask them how this year has been for them.

In a 365 day year there are about 250 days when the market is open. Most of the year’s gains will occur in less than 10 days, but you will never know which 10. Bottom line you should probably be in the market for the entire year to get the best gains for the year. Even in times like this I’m still a full time bull.

Thanks Orion, I’ll have to ask my brother if he buys on margin as he does some stocks. His 401K lost it’s but off this time around. He was just to gaining from the last down fall and now another. It’s good he has a pension when he retires, if that is still there :lol:

Actually, I invest as well as trade. I would never invest as bear. But when I trade, (much more fun and lucrative for me so far…) I play either way according to my REAL trading rules and do quite well. Investing is always a ‘long’ position.

No. I’m not worried about the worlds financial situation. Bull and Bear markets follow and precede each other. What made the 1929 crash become a depression was caused by people trading stock on margins (borrowed money from banks, i.e. credit) and when the market corrected (lost value), they didn’t have the cash or more credit to pay for the stock. The US Treasury created 850 Billion dollars (700 Billion for banks to have money to lend)

Wow! Some of you make me fear for your safety – carrying a 9mm or .40 S/W as backup or even primary for BEAR? I shot a small wild hog(approximately 140 to150 lbs.) at FIFTEEN YARDS with a 45-70 Gov. rifle – 300 grain slug – and it got up and CHARGED ME!!! Some of the “sidestream” relative to “mainstream” media outlets are showing that the massive U.S. debt to be so incredibly large that other countries are/will be unwilling to lend more money. The state of California may have to ask the U.S. Treasury for money to finance their ongoing operations as nobody else wants to buy more of their bonds. This is a troubling first for what may be also other states only way of continuing to operate – and pay the bills.(Sort of like what’s happened in the the auto industry)

A lot of the expansion of the economy over the past decade was made by substantially increasing debt (marketers offering all kinds of 0% financing). During the same time, many good paying jobs (that pay taxes) were sent out of the U.S. to countries where wages/costs are lower… as a result of free trade and “globalization”.

How to reverse this problem is a serious problem.

I used to hunt javelina, a type of wild pig native to the SW USA. I found that using large caliber and high velocity rounds made clean thru-and-thru wounds that did little to stop the prey. I think more controls needs to be put on day traders. If they sell stocks when the market start to go up, then the market sees all of the sales and goes down. So control is lost.

rosiecheeks, the problem with “nigger” is that it may not make for a very interesting video as the word comes from the French nègre, the Spanish negro and that comes from the Latin nigrum which means black.
So the word has always referenced a “black” or black-skinned person, not an “ignorant” person. The word may not have started out necessarily as a derogatory word, but it quickly became an insult shortly thereafter.
When the word became an insult, people were trying to imply that dark-skinned people were inferior to white-skinned people, which is what the insult basically was, and I’m sure that being “ignorant” was thrown in as part of that insult.. but the word itself does not mean “ignorant”.
I understand where you are coming from, as, if the word originally meant “ignorant” then perhaps it’s not really a racist word.. but since it always meant black, even from the very beginning, then that theory is not correct. The word has always described “black-skinned” people as the word itself comes from “black”.

I acidently treed a bear cub when I was deer hunting. And the sow (mother ) ran up the hill thinking that the cub was right behind her. I think what we need to do is place Marina’s comment so that if another person requests that word we can refer them back to her etymology of that word that she just gave to calm down this flame war or misunderstanding. If Marina doesn’t mind. We are always going to have someone bring up words that as some of us see them as not appropriate for this site, as there are some younger people that visit here like JRN’s son and we really just don’t care to see words like that on Marina’s site. Now when she chooses to open up the site that would be different, but I still feel Marina has a strong disliking to hate speech and so do the rest of us. I would like to see a moderator in a sense other than Marina cause she can’t be around all the time to monitor the site for occurrences like this. Marina, how’s it going, here is my word for today, “retreat”. the reason I am asking about this is that I am curious when this word was first used and who came up with it. Sort of like in some movie’s I have seen them say “fall back”, or more comically “run away” as they used in the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, Also the proper use of the word. Retreat could also mean something to the fact of a place to go to relax and get away.

The bike gallery is using flash technology and it is called tiltviewer. You can google “tiltviewer” to get more info. It takes quite a bit of work to get everything in place and tweaked right. There are more options to it… like each picture could have spun around to the other side to show detailed descriptions of each work etc. I really just wanted the interactiveness… it something different and people like it.
