    Marina,

I have noticed ever since John McCain said “the fundamentals of the economy are strong,” every politician and many news people have been using this word. Webster’s dictionary says it is from the 15th century but there was no entymology for it.

So what is the entymology of “Fundamental?”

  33. qtrtilldawn says:

This has nothing to do with anything on Marina’s site, nor does it even need to be re-posted by a normal person, but I am not normal…

I was looking up surveys and this is the crap that is online. LMAO.

    Penis Length Survey
Men are notorious liars about their penis length, so I have devised the following foolproof test.

Disrobe and stand by your keyboard. Rest your left testicle in the rounded hollow on top of the “1″ key. Rest your right testicle in the key immediately below that (the Q key on a standard keyboard, probably something different on the Dvorak keyboard. You lumberjacks may have to use the A or even the Z key).
Grasp your thing in your right hand and slap it firmly across the number key row on your keyboard. (For instance, my result is “1234567890-+” the backspace key removes the `.)
Place a copy of the June, 1981 Playboy open to the centerfold at a distance of 2.5 feet. Rest your thing on the keyboard and stare intently at the girl pictured for five minutes or until your feet leave the ground. Repeat the above test.
Please post your results to net.general and I’ll summarize to everyone on the net by personal mail.

    Cautions

Do not attempt this test after swimming. You will skew the results.
Black men may wish to use a special extended keyboard; or place two keyboards end to end.
If you try this test on a public keyboard, you may want to swab it down with alcohol first.
On some keyboards, severe sparking may result. Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy, and DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE IT.
Remember, Larry Bud Melman is not an attorney.

Incidentally, this test can also be used to diagnose some genital disorders:

    Test Results Diagnosis

1 You suffer from Short Penis Syndrome

12367 You have a strange gap in your penis

12efgbn Your penis has a right hand bend; sometimes called Jerker’s Lean.

    • Capman911 says:

Hey Animalntaz click on your monster Gravatar you have now. It will take you to http://WWW.Gravatar.com. There you will use the same email address as you used on Marina’s site to subscribe. Once you have registered at Gravatar they will guide you rest of the way through the process of uploading your picture to make a gravatar. It should show up after about fifteen minutes. If it doesn’t then you’ll need to clean out your cache. “ie” history, cookies, old files, etc. Refresh your page a few times and see if that will bring up your new picture. If you need more help let me know.

      • animalntaz says:

Does it matter if I’m using the public library computer? Because I’ve already selected an image for my e-mail address at that gravavtar site. :???:

No, it doesn’t matter if you us another computer. The two sites are listed under your email address your gravatar looks good.

    • Capman911 says:

Now if you want to attach you YouTube site to your name so it will turn blue like mine then go to the dash board at the top this page. Open it and go to your profile. Under your gravatar name will be a place for a web address. Just put in your web site or utube site in that box and it should work for you. Just copy and paste to that section of the dashboard.

    Thou Shalt Not Steel
    2008 Darwin Award Nominee
    Confirmed True by Darwin
(8 March 2008, Czech Republic) Steel is valuable, especially the high grade alloy used in steel cable. Scrap metal dealers do not ask questions. They pay in cash. And a good supply of cables can be found in elevator shafts.
This particular goldmine was a towering shaft inside an empty grainery near Zatec, 40 miles northwest of Prague. The cable was tightly fastened, and the far end of it disappeared into the shadowy distance above.

After substantial wear and tear on a hacksaw, our man finally cut through the strong steel cable. At that instant, the counterbalance, no longer held in check, started to move silently downwards, accelerating until it reached the bottom of the shaft.

Result: one proud winner of a “terminal velocity” Darwin Award.

In answer to your question – Exorcist – also Phycho was good.

But reactions to this vary a lot with the individual and also your age and changes in your perspective on life. Things that I would have scared me in the past don’t now.

My two oldest sons when they were younger had widely differing reactions to potentially scary films. One would be freaked out by ghost stories – but the other just though it was great to be allowed to stay up late and liked the story. However, the one that wasn’t scared about ghosts was freaked out by things like Alien while the other just thought of it as a good sci-fi movie.

The funny part is that the couple inside was having sex and felt the world move. The man in the home flung opened the door naked and said WTF is going on. Alright… idea failure #1… Nemesis: Marina’s evil twin sister, who, with her criminal genius has built a time machine and gone back in time to destroy the English language… word by word. But to taunt her good and virtuous sister Marina, aka Hot For Words, the Protagonist accompanied by her faithful word-sleuthing clue-hound Kobe, she leaves clues to the word she is attempting to destroy. Finding the final clue and correctly choosing the right word will recall said evil twin to the present.

      • Dezdkado says:

Idea Failure #2: Eddie Izzard plays the part of Marina’s evil sister.

      • Dezdkado says:

Idea failure #3: Scratch the time machine…

In her rage and jealousy of the fame and affection she feels was hers by right, Marina’s evil sister (yes, played by Eddie Izzard) has kidnapped Marina. Her purpose is to dispatch her sister and take over as the “real” Hot For Words. But to add insult to injury she taunts Marina by doubting the efficacy of her role as teacher. She will release Marina… IF… a team of her best students, an elite cadre, can use their logical, etymological, and other skills to discover a series of clues and solve a word origin that will reveal Marina’s location… but there’s a time limit. If the origin is solved, but late, Marina perishes in anguish. Also, notifying the authorities will also spell doom for the fair Russian lass. They will have to do this alone. This evil sister doubts such a team can match her criminal genius, but does keep tabs on them, just in case. Unknown to the students, the evil sister has no intention of releasing Marina… I mean, come on… she’s evil.

The team’s core consists of five students:
Captain Jack: Leader of the team — move aside Captain Morgan
Capman911: Fellow TA, with fire suppression and life saving skills, and Captain Jack’s right hand man
Miss Cupcake: Espionage and Infiltration — Wigs, false teeth, doggie socks, and acting and voice skills make her a woman of many disguises (besides, every team needs a token babe)
James: The junior member, armed with a digital camera, an MP3 player with a crappy headphone cord, sarcasm, and a rapier wit
and Pedantic Karl: no one’s been brave enough to ask what he does, but he’s been around forever

Assisting the team is a Special Guest Student — to be determined later (Teacher’s Pet, First Post, Bribery, whatever) and that loyal companion, the before mentioned word-sniffing clue-hound, Kobe — armed with whimsy, playfulness, and a catastrophic “cuteness overload”

    It’s also a Halloween-type word and since it’s close….

Hope you have a great week!

  79. raven62 says:

I don’t know for sure which movie is the scariest. I had dreams about two of them, one was when I was little. It is an old movie called “The Island of Terror” today it probably isn’t scary but when I was little it kept me up most of the night. The other one was “Jaws”. I guess the idea of being eaten got to me. “Nightmare on Elm Street” was scary but I didn’t have dreams about.

  80. reveckzeff says:

I wouldn’t say I’m scared by any horror/slasher movies, but the sound effect for the chick ghost from The Grudge haunted me for weeks!

American horror doesn’t phase me anymore. Is not being afraid of the ghost stories from ones culture a bad thing?

Japanese ghost stories scare the living bejebus out of me though. These Ju-On are not like American Ghosts. American ghosts are merely disturbed resonances from the past. Japanese ghosts, on the other hand, are vindictive spirits with a vendetta to unleash. Not only do they murder those who come into contact with them, they will follow you wherever you go. Unlike American ghosts who are ‘stuck’ in the structure they are trapped in, the Ju-On have no such boundary.

It’s quite something when you need seek from another country and culture to find that which strikes fear.

Word Request: the word Vendetta, it’s such an interesting word!

  85. CampKohler says:

I guess the scariest movie is a scary one seen at the most impressionable time of life, i.e. childhood. As kids, my sister and I buried our heads in the back seat of the car in a drive-in showing of 1951′s “The Man from Planet X.” One of the actors in the trailer will be widely recognized for his long career in TV.

  86. pagedoll says:

I saw a movie once after school called Trilogy of Terror. Three short stories, one of which was about a real scary looking “voodoo doll” that a lady brought home. It came alive and started chasing her around the house and it moved extra fast. The doll even got a small knife from the kichen and tried stabbing her through the space underneath the bathroom door. I can’t recall how it ends but I’m sure it wasn’t good. What I do know is, I’m not looking under the bed before I go to sleep tonight.

      That was a good movie.

I’ll add to that list with:
      The Exorcist
      Nosferatu
I saw both of those fairly young.

When I was a little kid the theme music for the Twilight Zone gave me the creeps.

  88. Dezdkado says:

Anyone ever been to the London Dungeon? I visited this attraction when I was 16 and it gave me the creeps.

Hey Marina, where do we get “dungeon” from? As a historian I usually see this word in reference to a tower. How did it become associated with an underground prison and torture chamber?

  89. Homework: I first saw ‘The Wizard of OZ’ when I was 2 or 3. Gave me a phobia of winds, cyclonic storms and vortices. I learned to step out of the bath before draining the water, and to close the lid before flushing the toilet. Then I saw ‘The Omen’ series of movies…

I came to enjoy experiencing the irony and horriffic twists of sci-fi and fantasy shorts like ‘The Twighlight Zone’, ‘The Outer Limits’ and ‘Night Gallery’, but never the gory ones or ghost stories like ‘Poltergeist’ or ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and the like.

  93. r1wolf says:

When I was like 9 years old, American Werewolf in London scared the crap out of me. But now I love Werewolves, soo much so, that I’m designing a back peace tattoo of a Werewolf…

    • Dezdkado says:

Yeah, those “dream” sequences and morphing scenes were intense. The lead man talking to the corpse of his dead friend is morbidly funny to me now, but was sure scary when I was young.

      • r1wolf says:

Agreed, now as an adult it’s more of a comedy. But the crackling of the bones and the detail of the morphing, at least for the times technology, was too much for me at that age. Now I love films like Van Helsing and Underworld.

      • Dezdkado says:

I like them for a certain actress… va va va voom! Amazingly, the first film I ever saw her in was a Shakespearean play (Much Ado About Nothing). That aside, I appreciate it when a playwright or screen-writer has a story to tell, not just a series of special effects and splatter scenes. In this Underworld does well for me.

There is no violence shown. The mood and atmosphere are structured in actors’ raw ability to convey terror and in the bleak color scheme of the visuals. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

…..anyone here seen a real ghost in their lifetime? Do tell.

    • matalexwolf says:

….oh, now you are just going to think I’m being a little crazy if I did tell…….which is fine, so last year up in town (London), I lived in Hackney renting a mates basement flat by Victoria Park…..when one night…..I awoke……with the bedroom ice cold, could even see my own breath but for the life of me Che, I couldn’t move, frozen I was, stuck to that bed with a sensation of someone, or something laying next to me. Now think what you will or what you like, I know what I saw when this ghost appeared right beside me. Well Che, I was so frightend mate, I could hardly breathe. Horrible looking thing too, hovered just above me with its tounge licking down the side of my cheek. Well, I could have hit it but I couldn’t see, ‘coz I couldn’t move being all frozen and scared. So I yelled out ‘F OFF’!! and give the spirit its dues, it did do just that, was gone in a second. The room went warm again as with me being able to move. So the next day, I went to the neighbouring church and did some research. It just so happens that my mates flats were built on an old grave area and being in the basement, six foot down or so, fell in line with all the graves that would still have been there if it wasn’t for the flats being built. –

This year, I had been renting in a Pent House, top notch spot too just up the road from here, when one night I again awoke only to see, who I thought at the time, was a mate of mine called Olly (renting another room) with a catapolt stood at the end of the bed playing tricks on me. I ignored him at first but he wouldn’t leave. Even through my pillow at him shouting at him to leave (bit crumpy see when I have just been awoken), this went on for a few minutes, with this kid like figure pinging things at me running about the end of the room. Only when suddenly in walks Olsy, all confused asking why I was telling him to get lost at four in the morning! – The Ghost vanished the moment Olsy appeared turning on the light, calling me a nutter!

I tell you Che, I could get the funny farm for all this but I sware on my life, and my Grandads if he were still alive, these are true sightings

Have others to tell but, That Mr Che, shall be for another time. Was just about to go to bed but, think I might just grab a quick cuppa green tea…..read a book, with the light on……

      • Che Volay says:

mat, we’ve go the rest of the month to tell more real life ghost stories,
….so i do believe every word you said, many a ghost have I encountered in my life, I use to get scared now it just a matter of fact occurrence. Does a feeling of being in a dream like state or half awake come over you body and mind at the time of an encounter? I know at times my state of being was altered somewhat. (not by drugs)
The logical scientific explanation I tell to people is that spirits give of a certain vibration of light, like rocks vibrate but at a real slow rate so rocks are really solid, ghost on the other vibrate at let say like a microwave beam or a radio signal….some folks can see this wave (vibration) of light some it’s not so easily seen.
… .. …have been in places where everyone as seen the say spirit.
do do do do do do do do
oh by the way sleep well tonight, sweet dreams muwahaha (evil laugh)

    • David says:

A friend said he saw a ghost. He went out the second story window in the middle of the night and landed on the pavement outside. He broke his hip and wrist. Later, he said he found out that two other people who had previously lived in the apartment said they saw a ghost. The friend was going to sue the landlord for failing to disclose this info to him.

Later, it was revealed that he had a run in with some unsavory dudes that “came by for visit” and threw him out.

When an insatiable great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, a police chief (Roy Scheider), a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) and an oceanographer (Richard Dreyfuss) seek to destroy it. Director Steven Spielberg created the summer blockbuster boom with this white-knuckle adaptation of the Peter Benchley novel. John Williams’s ominous musical score has become legendary

Clowns and dolls are just wrong in every way too (how do they manage to look at you like they do? Wish they would just stop doing that)….blaah, need to go watch The Jungle Book where everything is happy, playful, safe and fun once again…….

  113. louie says:

    Dobry vecher Marina,

As an adult I would have to say the scariest film I’ve seen was “Signs” with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. It wasn’t demon or horror scary but, how can I say it, cinematographically, scary. There is an incredible scene where we as the audience are watching Gibson and Phoenix watch a TV news report which in turn is playing a videotape of a birthday party in Mexico. I suppose what makes the scene so jumpy is part the comfortable feeling “how scary can a pinata party be” and part third or fourth person removed from the action. But the director and cinematographer were so skilled that when the alien came walking by everyone in the theater jumped! There are other excellent scary scenes in that film too.

As a child, like all children in the 70s, it was hands down — JAWS.

All my best to you and yours,

    Louie

Dear совершенная Marina, I thought you were scared of clowns, instead of scary movies! Oh, well.
For your homework, I don’t watch horror movies. They’re just too grisly. The most scary movies I actually have seen are the “Indiana Jones” series. From the booby traps in the caves of “Raiders of The Lost Ark” to the awful demons released from the Ark, itself. In “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, they had to go through caves of horrible bugs and insects, dine on the most horrible meal imaginable, and fight against the mind control of an evil thuggee sect. In “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” they must survive deadly booby traps to reach the Golden Chalice. By reaching for the Golden Chalice, Elsa, the German girl falls into a horrible abyss! In “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” there are hostile natives, deadly traps, and extraterrestrial beings, and a vicious foe, Colonel Irina Spalko, who wants to take the ET knowledge to further that evil empire. They were scary movies, indeed! (But if you were Colonel Marina, I’ try to make peace with you, right away!)

    • .. and cube .. i think it was

      .. i think Saw was a rip(sic) of Cube. :)

    • Dezdkado says:

I really like Saw… not for the gore, but for the thrill of figuring out what the hell is going on. To me, the Saw series is mystery and drama that is also very graphic.

I think I’m a horror snob. I perceive a difference between horror and a startling moment. I don’t consider the sight of something jumping out on the screen and giving me a momentary fright to be horror… it is startling, even thrilling, but not horror to me. Also gratuitous gore (a la Sam Peckinpah) is not horror to me. Villains like Freddie Kruger and Jason made me laugh as a child. However, the Amityville Horror, HP Lovecraft, and the Giger inspired Alien kept me up at night. Coming to grips with something seemingly supernatural and indomitable in its evil or devastation is horror to me… Though I credit many foe their story-telling skills, history (and I am biased here of course) holds more gruesome tales of horror and woe than any film-maker can capture. Not just sagas of ego-maniacal conquerors, but serial killers and others. That’s horror imo.
