As has been noted tides have a direct correlation to the moon ( and sun to a lesser extent ) and someone also noted crime rates go up. Absenteeism ( awol if you are in the military ) goes up and ER staff will confirm they fear the full moon as well. Driving its a little harder to tell ( everyone on the cell phone and texting ) but it sure seems to me rationality is significantly less.

The moon pulls at the earth creating some sorta wobble in the orbit,I forget what it’s called, same thing they use to find moons on distant worlds,if the world wobbles there must be a moon or some sort of satelite body causing the wobble.
Back in the day some chickie friends of mine said the full moon would make them rag(menstruate),is that true?
When Shane(my Son’s 1/2 bro)was about 3yo he called a full moon “full balloon”,one night at about that same age he leans forward in the truck, points up,and says,”look”,when my friend and I leaned forward and looked up Shane leans back and says “hehehehehe”,the tricky little shi#!!
We used to get waaayyyy loaded out on the gravel roads back in the 70s,during a full moon I would discretely reach and shut the headlights off while driving, scaring the crap out of everybody,I could see well enough cause of the full moon and I never left the lights off for long. Was a good trick. After the scare everybody wanted to get more loaded!

well, whenever i moon someone, they tell me i’m crazy…
but we all know the tides are a direct effect of lunar pull…
i mean, when the moon exerts its mass, Earth loses her water…
the moon actually seems to have near-zero effect on human behaviour, but there is one interesting study:
Data on five aggressive and/or violent human behaviors were examined by computer to determine whether a relationship exists between the lunar syndoic cycle and human aggression. Homicides, suicides, fatal traffic accidents, aggravated assaults and psychiatric emergency room visits occurring in Dade County, Florida all show lunar periodicities. Homicides and aggravated assaults demonstrate statistically significant clustering of cases around full moon. Psychiatric emergency room visits cluster around first quarter and shows a significantly decreased frequency around new and full moon. The suicide curve shows correlations with both aggravated assaults and fatal traffic accidents, suggesting a self-destructive component for each of these behaviors. The existence of a biological rhythm of human aggression which resonates with the lunar synodic cycle is postulated.

Some scientists are rationalizing the lunatic behavior of certain people due to the effects of an increase in positive ions due a full moon. Excessive positive ions can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, allergies, heart disorders and many more.
Negative ions counter the effects of positive ions and provide alertness, better breathing, better sleep and many more.
Hey beyondimage that’s a great word request of galoshes. I have often wondered that myself.

Dear ÑÐ¾Ð²ÐµÑ€ÑˆÐµÐ½Ð½Ð°Ñ Marina, For your homework the gravity of the moon affects ocean tides here on earth. Because the moon rises in the East and sets in the West it’s used to tell basic directions.
The moon is used as a romantic object in many songs, “Moon River”, “Blue Moon”, “By the light of the Silvery Moon” and many others in which a boy and girl go out and discover being close to each other. This is a great purpose, and it would be nice to go watch the moon with you. Your dear student, seesixcm6

I once caught a loon fishing, I was using a slip bobber technic, 20 feet of water with a very large shinner minnow, I was trying to land a large northern pike, anyway, all the sudden I got a battle that was extremely vicious and frightening, I fought what I thought was a pike, so when I had wrenched the loon to the surface, the loon (I now call him Leroy), took off across the water and I was about to cut the line when the loon shook his head and spit the hook out. I was all alone so this story isonly verified by me and Leroy, but trust me I could not make this up.

Dear Marina,
How nice! What a dark and unromantic world this would be without the moon. Ask any poet or composer. I can hear Sinatra (“Fly me to the moon and let me swing among the stars”), Van Morrison (Moondance), Neil Young (Harvest Moon), Cat Stevens (Moonshadow), Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Dylan (Blue Moon and the cover by the Cowboy Junkies), and the classics, LVB’s Moonlight Sonata. HFW fans, I am sure, can add many more. So, I think without the moon we would be missing that soft light which let’s us get a little crazy in the otherwise bleak darkness and illuminates the path with a heart.
Q

I too am from Minnesota. And we have a small town up here called Vergas. Their town mascot is the Loon. They have a week long event/celebration called Looney Days that brings out all the crazy people.
As far as the lunar changes I know that the Likenthorpes are affected greatly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
i was thinking that, but on checking the precession refers to the tilt of the earth’s axis rather than the wobble on the orbit.
I’ve had a look and only seen the wobble on the orbit referred to as “wobble”. – didn’t look particularly hard though.

hello my lovely instructor. i was hoping you could define this word for me and help me find the correct word I am looking for. The word is (beleaguer) as used by Katie Curect in her interview with Gov. Sarah Palin. The word I am looking for is one that I see the left wing using on alot of republicans when they are discussing an issue. I don’t know if there is a word for this tactic but it goes something like this. Exp. I ask you if you have finished you homework and you reply have you noticed your shoe is not tied and we get off track from my question and now are focused on why my shoes are not tied. The discussion becomes one of me explaining why my shoes are not tied and my question about your homework goes unanswered or forgotten all together. It’s like a sneaky way to tranfer the thinking of the person who is asking the question away from the issue they wanted an answer to, to something that has nothing at all to do with what I wanted to know in the first place. Can you help me with this? Get back to me asap as I want to email O’reilly and use it. thank you. I love your beauty and brains keep up the good work and the best to you.

Well in the world of the supernatural, the lunar cycle plays a part in various different lore. The most popularly used in media, is the werewolf. In a few of the lore for them, a full moon transforms a person into a half man/woman half wolf.

The tiides are affected by the moon and earths gravitational pull on each other
tryant
This is close;
“While the gravity of a star tugs on a planet and holds the planet in orbit, the planet’s gravity also tugs on the star. That tug makes the star wobble slightly back and forth. If the wobble is along our line of sight, then sensitive instruments called spectrographs may be able to detect it.
The size of the wobble depends on the planet’s heft (mass) and its distance from the star. The larger the mass of the planet, the bigger the star’s wobble will be, making larger planets easier to detect. At the same time, a planet in a tight, short-period orbit is easier to find than one in a wide, long-period orbit.”
I’m think the show I saw some time ago was about a similar effect of a moon on a planet,same principal anyhow. The quote came from here,hope the link works;;

alright, this is kinda confusing.
merriam webster suggests middle english loun as as origin of “loon” in the sense of “a crazy person”.
for the bird, they suggest a “Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse lÅmr loon.”
oxford says, “loon” as a “silly or foolish person” originated from the bird “loon” which is “probably from Shetland dialect loom.”
uh, yeah, could anyone elaborate on that?

..animal attacks, do tell more James, most interested about this.
Always have wished to dive coral reef under full moon in spring as thats when coral spawns. I know sounds a bit weird wanting to scuba swimming through loads of eggs and sperm however, some how, like clock work, for only one night of the year the coral let it rip. So my understanding would be that the moon has such an effect with all life, plants, animals…everything, would be doomed with out it. …..also thinking as we are made up 80%+ water we must also feel the effects of the moon. My teeth do get a tad sharper nearer the full moon with urge to eat red meat rare, quite energised too, restless, a little bit of a loon you might say  no joke thinking about it, everytime ive injured myself that I can recall (recently fell off my bike busting a rib or two, not the harvest moon but the one before that) is when there is a full moon….. // Dictionaricdotcom and Marina have commented below on another observation regarding, womans things….but is also very true, like clock work at times, but thats all I know about that!

Subjects
1621 consecutive patients, irrespective of age and sex.
Main outcome measures
Number of patients who attended an accident and emergency department during 1997 to 1999 after being bitten by an animal. The number of bites in each day was compared with the lunar phase in each month.
Results
The incidence of animal bites rose significantly at the time of a full moon. With the period of the full moon as the reference period, the incidence rate ratio of the bites for all other periods of the lunar cycle was significantly lower (P <0.001).
Conclusions
The full moon is associated with a significant increase in animal bites to humans.

Great lesson, Marina – but I have to wonder at the pronunciation. I don’t know how different the pronunication of old dutch is compared to modern dutch, but taking the modern dutch as an example, “loen” would be pronounced as the english “loon”.
“oe” in dutch is pronounced as the “oo” in loon.
“oo” in dutch is pronounced as the “o” in home.
“o” in dutch is usually pronounced as the “o” in mockingbird, but sometimes also as the “o” in home (to confuse foreigners, no doubt   )
Can you remember that for the next time you use a dutch word as reference? It would be really cool if you pronounced all those words in all those different languages correctly. :)

CUT TO THE QUICK means the living flesh is touched, deeply so you nerves can feel the offense. The cut is not superficial like on a nail or an unsensitive part of the body, mainly the hair and the horny part of the skin. (I feell this HORNY is going to give birth to a dispute)

And bus. And to add a more British one, Lorry.

P.S. Then maybe there are all sorts of words for parts of cars that are different in American and British English – bumper/fender and hood/bonnet and trunk/boot and probably a bunch of others in that category.

Gravity ? But why only for the human body ? Sometimes I get the feeling that all that stuff is not in vain. It was made by something clever I will name God. You know, not the beardy one, the very mysterious one. The moon is also a shield for the earth attracting the asteroids of minor size. Very often Faith in “God” is sustained by the mysteries of Science : Ï€ has no sequence and 1/3 = 0,33333333333 but 0,3333333 * 3 = 0,9999999. What about the center of a center or the end of the end. That stuff is also pulling heads and not every 28 days but every second of our existence…

You never watch the tele, a guy just flew over the English Channel with a Jet Pack and wings.
This is easy to explain – navis is Latin for a ship and the Navy is the organisation which operates ships. Navy blue comes from the former colour of the Royal Navy uniforms which are now black.
What is more intriguing is (Word request) why are labourers who dig holes in the ground called Navvy/Navvies?

However, the animal with the largest size penis, in relation to its body is a barnacle whose penis can be up to seven times its body size, which must be why a racing yacht skipper is fucked if he gets barnacles on his bottom.

In Scottish a Loon, Loun or Lown is a worthless person or is used as a slang term for a boy.
The adjective Loun or Lowen means serene (referring to the state of the air or water i.e. calm.
As a verb it means to tranquilise or to become calm.

Hi Marina!
Just found out about your sight a few days ago from The O’Reilly (misspelled?) Factor. I love it, sooooooo good to know how many other people are interested in words! I was wondering if you could look up the etymologies of some of these words I’ve worked with for a while, but never found the origins of:
I can think of more, but these are a few prominent ones. Thanks. Again, love your site! (And your motto!)

Well hello Marina!
First time commenting, glad to be here, actually.
Well, my dear teacher, I was reading an article about the Titanic and I was thinking about words that I would love to know the origin of.
I have a vague idea of where it comes from, but why, I have no clue.
Marina, I would like to request that you find the origin of the word “Titan”. I know about the Titans of Greek mythology, and I know why they were called that. I just have no clue as to why the word Titan was picked.
Anyways, if you could help clear this up… Well, it’d make my day!
Thanks.

I’ve also found a reference to a study in Padova, Italy which suggests a correlation between spontaneous abortions and the 206-day periodicity in extreme lunar distances.
So maybe it’s not just too much moon but also too little that causes problems.
(I hasten to add that such studies are not my normal choice of reading. It just goes to prove that Google is a wonderful tool for reminding oneself how ignorant one is.)

You got me thinking of that show ‘American Gladiators’, which I think is a bit over-rated with a lot of the contenders letting that show got to their heads.
All that smack talk they do on that show is pretty cheesy. I can picture a contender saying something of a lame trash-talk line for Titan on the Joust event, right before getting his own head knocked off:
“If Titan is short for ‘Titanic’, then he is about to face the tip of the iceberg!”
Gravity has a profound effect in our world but it appears to be the weaker of the the known forces. Surprisingly we know very little about gravity and yet it was one of first forces we came to know. String theory shows that gravity might pass from one dimension to another which maybe why we can’t see it. Hopefully we can see some evidence of it with experiments done on the LHC. From what we learn from there we can test to see if gravity has effects on how our bodies function.

Predicting the tides is something I teach in my captain’s class. If anyone cares, here is a bit of info about the types of Tides. On of the question on my exam is “What is a Neap tide?”
Spring Tides
When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known as a spring high tide. Spring tides are especially strong tides (they do not have anything to do with the season Spring). They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.
Neap Tides
During the moon’s quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide. Neap tides are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another (with respect to the Earth). Neap tides occur during quarter moons.
The Proxigean Spring Tide is a rare, unusually high tide. This very high tide occurs when the moon is both unusually close to the Earth (at its closest perigee, called the proxigee) and in the New Moon phase (when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth). The proxigean spring tide occurs at most once every 1.5 years.
Now you know just a bit more about they types of tides we have. Question: Why would we need to know what the tide is going to be? What use is it to us?
pig-in-a-poke
I didn’t see anyone mention it, but don’t you know werewolves come out during a full moon? Jeepers creepers, gives piggies a frieght!

Werewolves, also known as lycanthropes, are mythological or folkloric humans with the ability to shapeshift into wolves or wolf-like creatures, either purposely, being bitten by another werewolf or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon, as popularly noted by the medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury, although it may have been recognized in earlier times among the ancient Greeks through the writings of Petronius.

Greg (or roadrunr..)
I was going to indulge in creating a piece of work involving some effort. … i needed a couple of little points of token communication to get a handle on who she was … but even after … something like 40 days now .. zero .. no communication at all other than fly-by comments that don’t count as communication. ..I’ve made attempts and they’re noticed and ignored and maybe even made a game of – so my effort stalled and faded and abandoned.
I always gave M the benefit of the doubt and assumed i was imagining a negative character … but the clincher was B O’Reilly … you would say, given your background, that M’s performance with BO was good, i bet .. but for me it was the opposite .. proof that she’s entirely the kind of person i’d dislike, and all the rest backs it up.
So, basically, i was an asshole for assuming she was one kind of person when all the while she was utterly different. – of course this is a problem with me, but it doesn’t mean i have to like her.

Marina, You might want to get rid of the video response to your “slap her behind with a shaggy thong day” video.
My cellphone (Sprint Sanyo SCP 8400) got injured yesterday. I dropped it in the alley when I was helping my sister move some stuff into storage. When I discover it was missing I had just looked over to the alley and watch a garbage truck run over it. Surprisingly it survived, well sort of. Other than a few scratches it looked ok. But the screens have cracks like a spiderweb. I can see anything but black and white. Interestingly enough I can still make calls from the speed dial or with my voice dialing. The ringer doesn’t work because it used the external speaker that is not functioning. But it still vibrates. Now I have to figure out what I want to do with it. 1# I can buy a new one and figure out if there is a way to move all the data from the old phone to the new one. 2# Send it in to Sprint to be repaired. #3 Wait until February to dump Sprint and get an iPhone. What should I do?

My friend Jacob had something happen to that, yet, his phone didn’t go through quite as much as your poor phone did. His story is that he got a penny stuck in between the two screens and it messed his phone up, but it still works just fine.
In my opinion, if it’s still of any use, just keep using it. February isn’t too far away, so you might as well keep it until you can get an iPhone.

“Cyber” is from the Greek word for navigator. Norbert Wiener coined “cybernetics” around 1948 to denote the study of “teleological mechanisms” [systems that embody goals].

Dear Marina,
What is the origin of the term bailout? In aviation it seems to mean jumping out with a chute as the plane crashes. At sea it means tossing water out of a ship to keep it afloat. In Washington it seems to mean throwing huge amounts of taxpayer money into businesses ruined by greed. So, how about it? What is a bailout?

The word “bail” is from the Middle English “baille,” from the Anglo-French, “bucket,” from Medieval Latin “bajula” a water vessel, and from the feminine of the Latin bajulus meaning porter or carrier. Thus, a bail is a container used to remove water from a boat to keep it from sinking.

The vanished gods to me appear;
And one to me are shame and fame.
They reckon ill who leave me out;
When me they fly, I am the wings;

Sorry I misinterpreted your comment, but don’t you see that you are making light of a serious question? BTW when I was growing up, my family had two chihuahuas; one was a skinhound who prowled the neighborhood on a constant booty call, and the other was one of the dearest little critters I’ve ever known. In any case, not only are you gay bashing, but you are also making a judgment about a breed simply because it isn’t typically the choice of adult males, and because one is treasured by Paris Hilton who, though she’s a bit simple-minded, is really a very sweet person who treats everyone as equals and has no prejudices — unlike yourself.

I just checked one of my books and I didn’t find anything that mentions spring tides. I think it will require further investigation. I don’t think there is a connection with spring lines for the fact the lines to act as a spring for the ships movement fore and aft. I still have one other book to check but I suspect it won’t be in there either. We might have to ask Marina about that one. She has found things that even I was unable to find.

Marina, where does the phrase “Can of Corn” used in baseball to for an easy flyball to the outfield?
Not necessary, if the spring lines are position properly. Spring lines really work best with large tide changes. Breast lines should not be used because they would part at low tide. Extended Bow line and Stern lines if long enough will work in place of Breast lines keeping the vessel close to the dock. The elasticity of all your dock lines will stretch quite a bit if they are long and made of nylon.
I just checked my other books and didn’t find any connection with Spring tides & Spring lines. I think someone else can answer this question better than I can.
I have a question for Marina. Can Oxford Companion books be trusted? Im beginning do doubt mine.

Sounds like you are having another bad week. New bank, bad phone I hope it starts getting better for you.
Thanks! I still wonder why Uncle Sam thinks a bailout is putting something in (e.g. taxpayer money) even though it typically means taking something out (e.g. water from a boat).

What do you want an Einstein? You have set the bar to high.
She is a clever and smart Business Woman.
She is not big on talking to people that are very opinionated or …….old XD.
Yes, you can see your feet in her pool….but she is trying

She is fun to watch ………right??
CaptainJack, when I was young, I was advised to “diversify.” I have small savings at Wamu, and also in a credit union, Wells Fargo and elsewhere. Too bad I bailed out of the stock market and gold many years ago. If I held on to them, I could be typing this from my Beverly Hills mansion, with movie starlets for household staff. seesixcm6
no … i don’t think you get my drift .. she’s smart and witty and nice looking .. but – i have to stress … i’m not talking about a relationship .. i’m talking about a token contact because i was going to put this effort in, it’d help if i got some kind of handle on her character.
She can have any kind of contact with anyone she wants – my criticism is really about what i expected. I thought she’d be more professional about it (i say that because the quality of her vids shows a grasp of professionalism) – I mean .. in any organisation, management are careful to deal respectfully even with complete nonentities. I thought i could count on at least that.
(M vids have had 115 million views .. if i hadn’t been watching them, M would have had over 115 million views.)
1. I do not watch Bill O’Reilly, in fact the only segments I’ve seen of his were those with ODT (Our Dear Teacher), aside from your [this] link, just now – not because I have anything against him or his show, but because that sort of sensationalised confrontationalism simply has no appeal to me.
2. Mr. O’Reilly DOES seem to have a following – enough to keep him on the air so long.
3. The segments ODT does on his show are exactly NON-confrontational, and ODT has demonstrated (to me) incredible tact in the face of his directly drawing her into saying how “bad” her native Russia is, or it’s former socialist system was, and how “good” democracy and capitalism are supposed to be, by just being honest when having her opinions drawn out, and by keeping her primary focus on Her thing – philology.
4. While I do see her segments with him as a fine ‘launch pad’ for herself, simply because of his pre-established popularity, I must heartily support ODT in her efforts to establish herself, even via Mr. O’Reilly, and predict that she will do well as long as she doesn’t allow herself to be drawn into a debate with the man.
5. I gotta admit that [this] was pretty darn low, and certainly does not enhance either my opinion of or respect for Mr. O’Reilly, but still must conlude that ODT is doing Her thing, not his, and doing it quite well.
FWIW, That’s my horse, and I’m riding it. Rock on, Marina. Just keep him on YOUR topic. Only thing I (not that it ws the right thing for HER to do, but simply what *I* would have done) would have done different were I in her shoes, was when asked to compare the two systems, my reply would have been more along the lines of: “Do you wish to discuss etymologies or politics? After all, you invited me here to discuss the former, on which I am expert, on the latter, well, perhaps I’m not the one to ask.” But I can find no fault in her for stating her opinions, regardless of his manipulations of them, even if for the simple fact that the response I suggested carries a certain risk of not getting that next invitation.
Well, bailout also applies to paying money to bail someone out of jail. In this case, I guess we’re bailing bad paper out of the floundering companies to keep them afloat, and also pouring in big bucks to … oh, hell .. why bother trying to make sense out of such a monumental screwup?

Hi, Jack. Thanks for the headsup re off-topic time fillers; but, in the case in question it’s quite possible that the questioner is a female who has a chihuahua of her own, which would mean that James’ comment would be quite hurtful and insulting to her.

Yep — the moon is the sole cause of the tides. As it circles the earth its gravity pulls the earth’s waters toward it; and, as it moves away from an area, its waters return to normal. The moon circles earth twice a day, so we have two high-and-low tide cycles each day.
I suspect it has to do with some ancient ritual that involved actually binding two people together with a rope as part of the wedding ceremony; however, my dark side suggests something a bit more cynical, such as marriage being akin to having a noose tied around one’s neck.
I used to bank at Well Fargo when I lived in Long Beach, Ca. I dumped them when I move because they where charging me to have an account with them. I went to a credit union for about 12 years. Then I started with WaMu. Im thinking about trying Well Fargo because they treated me better than US Bank. USB charged me $5 bucks to cash one of their own checks. They even tried to make me open an account. She even knew that I was banking with WaMu because I showed her my wamu card for ID. Then I received a check from WF and they didn’t charge me a dime and never begged me to open an account. That really impressed me. If I go to another branch and experience the same thing they I might move to them.
Isn’t THX a type of sound quality standard :?: :?: :?:

Yikes! Have pity on poor Marina, please. It would take a book to answer this one.

I saw a documentary about this on TV recently. Seems that, when the earth was just forming and was in a total liquid state, it was hit on an angle by a huge asteroid causing a portion of the earth to be knocked away into myriad molten pieces. Those that were too far away to be pulled back by the earth’s gravity circled the earth and eventually their own gravity pulled them all together and they coalesced into our moon. Scientists created a computer program that tested this theory and it produced exact replicas of the earth and moon. Way kewel, huh? Ps foxbow is correct: all stars and planets are round because they were initially in a liquid (molten) state and, like a drop of water, are made round by uniform surface tension.
drshi
To chomp means to chew vigorously. A “bit” in this idiom is the metal portion of a horse’s bridle (headgear) that fits in its mouth. When a horse is excited, it chomps at its bit; thus a person who’s “chomping at the bit” can’t wait to get going.
The moon doesn’t have an effect on gravity. Gravity has an effect on the moon. The moon is close enough so that it doesn’t “wander off” and continues to orbit around us in an oblong shape, but not close enough to be caught by the Earth’s atmosphere (thank goodness). The moon does influence a woman’s period though. The reason why is bc when principles of time were being understood and developed (i.e. realizing that there were 12 months instead of 10) the sun and moons rotation were the basis for measurement. (Hence the Native Americans saying “many moons ago”…since the cycle of how full the moon became was the equivilant of roughly one month). More or less a coincidence, a woman’s menstrual cycle is 28 days which is about the same as a full moon to cycle. That could make someone feel as though the full moon is causing them to feel irregular. But again, it’s merely coincidence. A woman has to have her period any time it is not fertilized (kind of like throwing out eggs from the fridge bc no one used them after a month, and replacing them with fresh ones). The moon would still continue to cycle regardless of if the woman was having her peiods or became pregnant. Trimesters of a woman’s pregnancy, though making a woman seem “loony” with odd appetites, are not affected by the moon’s cycls either.
To put it another way, the moon is always within plain sight (unless cloudy or SOLAR eclipse…where sun blocks the moon). How visible is determined by the presence, or lack there of, of the sun. So really feeling of pulling heads every 28 days is a selective perception. If the moon actually had an effect, one would feel like pulling heads 24/7 and not 8/28.

For your information, O’Reilly’s show has more than twice the viewers than all the other cable news shows COMBINED. Moreover, according to a recent Rasmussin pole, the viewership of both his program as well as Fox News overall breaks down as follows: Democrats 33%, Republicans 39%, and Independents 18%. That sounds pretty Fair And Balanced to me. Virtually all the other networks are liberal, yet Fox still pulls 33% of the Dems. Believe it or not, I just happened to see this discussed during a TV game. Seems that in the old general stores the canned corn was usually stored on a high shelf so more appealing goods could be more easily accessed. To get a can for a customer, the storekeeper would use a long-handled grabber to snag it. Thus, in baseball a can of corn is a fly ball that can be caught as easily as snagging it with a grabber. I also heard “Sunday hop” discussed, and it refers to a ground ball that, as it approaches the fielder, it bounces in such a way as to make it effortless to catch. Since Sunday is A Day of Rest, and in the past no one worked on that day, fielding a Sunday hop requires no work.

In psychology, we call this “misdirection.” It’s the same ploy that’s used by slight-of-hand artists who do something to draw your attention away from the trick at the crucial moment the old switcheroo occurs. You’ve described this brilliantly as it applies to a psychological disorder, as well. For example, if someone’s pathology causes them to do something destructive or hurtful that is not at all what “the real person” would do, and you then try to rub their nose in it, they often simply deny having done it. Even if they did this wrong to you personally, they will still deny having done it, thereby misdirecting the discussion away from what they did, and redirecting it to whether or not they actually did it. In this way they avoid having to face the unconscious guilt over their uncharacteristic behavior.

In the past few months I sent a message to YT to request the unflagging of a video and they would unflag Marina’s videos within four hours of my request. That message text box is now no longer there and it seems to me that YT is trying to distance themselves from those and other requests.
I’ve read somewhere that flagged videos are now pretty much in granite after they are reviewed by YT as the YT policies seem to be getting more strict or getting more enforced as time goes on.
If anybody else knows anything about the YT flagging let me know.

Wrong about Thailand, which used to be called Siam.
At some point during WWII (I think) the name was changed to Thailand.
There is a story that the name was changed to indicate that the country had never been occupied by a colonial power (from the west – presumably wartime occupation by Japan doesn’t count!), because “tai”, in the Thai language, means freedom.
However, “tai” is also the name of the majority ethnic group and, in some parts of Thailand, is used to simply mean “people”.
So the name “Thailand” simply means “The Land of the People” and is analogous the name-meaning of other countries, for instance “Kalaallit Nunaat” is the new name for Greenland (since partial autonomy was granted by Denmark) which means Land of Men (generic not sexist). Etymology of Thailand 1 Etymology of Thailand 2 This site has an interesting forum thread on the origin of etymology of countries.

A few comments below, Bob made a great comment about the etymology of Thailand, which got me to think about Deutschland having a similar meaning. The video request would be something like this:
1. Pick about 5 or 10 countries where the etymology of those counties means “The Land of the People”. (Deutschland, Thailand, … ?)
– or –
2. Pick 5 or 10 countries identifying interesting related etymologies.

I couldn’t resist poking fun at the two possible ways of reading that sentence. If I didn’t see the related context of the above paragraph, I might think that proper should have been an adverb (properly), but in the context of your paragraph above, it is an adjective.
Things like that always fascinate me.

Hey!
This may seem like a dumb request and I will not be offended if you do not use it. It’s not a question of “why” is more of a “why not.” The word is “fish.” Why is it so wrong in the English language to use “fishes” as a plural? Why does “fish” not have a plural term? That has always bugged me and I was hoping you would know what to say about it. :-)
Thanks, have a good one!!

Hi Marina! I want to know the origin of the word “villain”. I have read in the “Da Vinci Code” book that the Christian church were afraid of people living in “villes” (ville meaning city or town in French). It’s said in the book a ville was back the referring to the countryside. Many people on the countryside had, as opposed to the people in the cities, their own religions based on nature.
The church then spread propaganda in order to supress the older religions. Ville became Villain because the church accused them for being criminals(?), since they had another religion. There are more examples in the book of words they “turned around”.
On Wikipedia, it says something entirely different.. I thought it was interesting to know what is true, maybe both? I hope you can investigate this!

Thanks for the link Mijj; highly amusing but, of course, in this country that sort of creativity would be stomped on by the squares at Town Planning.
Also, I loved that quote from Albert Einstein – “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.” Kind of like W.Somerset Maugham’s “The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit.”

Good request. I’d second that. In medieval times (900 to 1200a.d.), there was a land called Rus which had a capital in Kiev. But the city of Kiev is in the Ukraine, which is now a different country than Russia. Maybe they called themselves Russians from that ancient country called Rus, but the borders are much different now! seesixcm6

I appreciate news shows that explore various viewpoints. If someone (such as you) has something to say, I want to listen, so I can gather more information. I will not tell you “shutup!” because your ideas are different from mine. I am very happy that M’s audience is growing, and I wish her great success. I just hope that her growth will continue and we will see her with a host who is more positive in his or her exploration of the truth. Thank you for your thought-out and provoking response.
drshi
Thanks for the list; still, most liberal sites freely draw information from the likes of the daily and huffington Posts, and moveon.org, which routinely take O’Reilly’s comments out of context and downright lie about him so that he became a pariah among liberals until Hillary broke ranks and more people got to see his show for themselves. I can tell you’re a thoughtful person, so I challenge you to watch The Factor a while and see for yourself. His guests are always balanced among liberals, conservatives, and independents. It’s an opinion show — not just reportage — and Bill is admittedly a culture warrior and an Irishman who often states his feelings with passion. It’s also called The No-Spin Zone, so he interrupts guests when they dance around questions. In all honesty you seem like just the sort of person upon whom he’d grow quite quickly.
drshi
Thanks, in return, for your thoughtful response. I take it, then, by “more positive in his or her exploration of the truth” that you can’t abide anyone becoming overtly angry, indignant, and outraged by corruption and heinous crime? It is Bill O’Reilly who’s been responsible for the passage of Jessica’s Law in most states now, mandating a minimum 25-year prison term for anyone who rapes a child. Has he hounded and berated lawmakers who’ve blocked this legislation? Your darn right he has. Does he vigorously go after corrupt politicians and CEOs like Jeffrey Immelt of G.E., who’s still doing business with Iran and has ruined NBC by making it become blatantly biased in its reporting? Yes, indeed. He ALWAYS presents both sides of every position, and when he states an opinion he always follows it with other pundits and asks, “Where am I going wrong?” In short, the exploration of the real truth is his passion, so I feel you are doing yourself a disservice by not trying him on for a week and letting me know if I’m right. You won’t be sorry, I assure you.

You’ve restored my faith in humanity (thought its always been shaky at best). Yesterday was my first day on this site and it really was a shock to see so much derision and bad language. However, I disagree with your assumption that Marina merely skips over posts that are critical of her. No woman would ever do this; and, having myself been married to a Russian woman, I assure you that their hearts and far more vulnerable than our mostly masculinized gals. Anyway, now that I know you’re a reasonable guy, I promise I won’t come down on you like the plague any more; but I hope you won’t mind if I gently kick you under the table if I feel your discourse is becoming a bit too harsh. Hello Marina, I just sent YT a message to unflag three of your videos. There are many more of your videos flagged. I want to see when they unflag these.
Guess what? The Antidisestablishmentarianism video which is 3rd in the Google search is also flagged. I didn’t request to unflag it yet, but I will.
The YT flagging system is broken. Just like gun control where the criminals own guns, on YT the hardcore pervs don’t get flagged.
I’ve been trying to figure out the TubeMogul graphs and I’m puzzled.
Would have expected a huge spike with O’Reilley. Could be that the video flagging is having an affect?

Right! Give that kid a cigar! … chocolate, of course. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot, but just think about what your comment meant to the questioner if she owns a chihuahua. Truce?
You’ll be happy to know that it’s not wrong to use “fishes” as the plural, it’s just fallen out of vogue and has been replaced by a more playful idiom, “fishies.” An adult may say to a child, “Look at all the little fishies!” The Bible refers to “all the fishes of the sea,” possibly meaning all the different kinds of fish. Generally, when a shorter word is as acceptable as a longer one, the longer one atrophies from disuse.
drshi
What I’m most curious about in this regard is how our English names for many countries vary so much from what those countries call themselves. How did Deutschland become “Germany” to us, f’cryin’ out loud?
It would be great if you would tone down your language, please. This IS a linguistic site, after all, and there are ladies present. Thanks.

no.
if that was the case, you’d have a null suffix to form a plural on all nouns.
sg: child — pl: *child, *childs, children.
you may also take a look at how imperfect tenses are formed in german. people mostly use present perfect tense (not simple past) to express something that happened in the past.
http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
it would be great if you could just look into a book to see what linguistics is about.
thanks.
who the hell are you to tell me what the fuck to do, anyway?
drshi
I was referring to instances in which two words are both proper, in which case the shorter tends to prevail. “childs” is not a proper plural for child, but “fishes” is an acceptable plural for fish.

In my professional opinion as a psychologist, your compulsion to inject profanity into your discourse is a clear indication of pent-up unconscious rage. Another red flag is your misinterpreting other’s words to suit your own agenda. I did not “tell” you what to do; I merely made a request, which you automatically took as an excuse to express more rage. Finally, though my use of the word “linguistics” was perfectly proper — it involves the nature, structure, and modification of language — you needed to find something to criticize in return, which is a clear sign of emotional immaturity. I trust that all will henceforth know the appropriate attitude to take toward your future posts. Have an angry day!
drshi
RE your link to O’Reilly’s anger twenty years ago: Apparently you don’t see the difference between conscious rage taken completely out of context, and purely gratuitous profanity when no conscious rage exists or has cause to be expressed.

what role does it play what kind of site we’re on? exactly: none. your mentioning of this site as a linguistic site (which it isn’t) indicated that “profanity” and linguistics don’t go together. or something to that effect. care to elaborate on that?

not astrology, astronomy – similarly to the way modern chemistry had it’s roots in alchemy, astronomy had its ancestor of astrology, and both kept many of their original symbols. on the periodic table find Silver is Ag (argentum), Mercury is Hg (hydrargyrum = liquid silver), Sodium is Na (natrium) etc. They just kept their old names / symbols as science evolved from its pseudoscience roots.

so that quote needs updating ..
“the ability to post a link is a serviceable substitute for creativity”
Exactly…the moon doesn’t quite orbit the earth…they both actually orbit a common center of rotation, being one focus of the very nearly circular ellipse that would be described were the earth stationary – more like ice skaters, but one being a fraction the mass of the other. Two similar adults on ice would naturally “orbit” a point halfway between them. An adult skating with a child would “orbit” a point much closer to the adult.

The TA’s here monitor the tone of the site. I think they prefer a more familiar and robust style conducive to creativity rather than a clinical formal analytic style.
The people you’re criticizing have been around a fair while and are more close to Marina than anyone else here so really, in their case, you’re not really defending her from vandals, you’re getting in the way of her friends.

gasp! .. i don’t believe what i heard!! .. “pseudoscience roots”
.. alchemy wasn’t a science at all (in the usually accepted sense of the word “science” – i.e. objective and analytic) – it was entirely 100% subjective – it was the study of the world from within via allegory, fable, parable, mythology, etc etc!
.. any stumbling upon practical results useful in the real world were entirely accidental.

Like you, I have a tendency to speak my mind and let the cards fall where they may; but I’m also open to criticism, so — if many of those closest to her are the very ones I’ve thought to be antithetical to the ambiance she deems appropriate for her site, then I’m the one who doesn’t fit. Hello drshi,
re: How did Deutschland become “Germany”
The “How” is the easy part. The word Germany comes to us from the Roman word Germani (Germanen) which may be a loan from a Celtic exonym applied to the Germanic tribes, based on a word for “neighbour”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_peoples
The “Why” I have not found an answer for and can only speculate that since German is not a romance language, it is more difficult for English speakers and other countries to pronounce the “Deu” sound, so the roman word Germany is used.
The other reason is political as the Roman Empire occupied that region for some time and the roman (Latinized) names can be seen everywhere. Cologne instead of Köln, Austria instead of Österreich and so on.
pedantickarl
P.S.
The many widely-varying names of Germany in different languages, is believed to be perhaps more than for any other European nation. There are many different countries surrounding Germany.
Hi, Pedantickari–
Gee, thanks so much for your time and effort! Seems there is still a lot here for Marina to help clarify. Meanwhile, I finally figured out why we say “Spain” when the country’s name is Espania. In English, we pronounce the letter “S” as “sssss,” while in Spansh, “S” is pronounced “ess” — the same way we say the letter. The rest became truncated and twisted by dialects. Another example of unfamiliar word twisting: I was just watching an old Laurel and Hardy movie and in it, “Hawaii” is pronounced “Ha-woy-ya” (the woy rhymes with “boy”).

poorly chosen phrasing/ improper analagy on my part… what I was trying to get at was that the things observed kept their names irrespective of who was doing the looking, that astrologers and alchemists just happened to be first, the astronomers and chemists who came along later just kept the names.

Only GSM phones have sim cards. In the US many companies used TMDA and CDMA which don’t use sim cards. The phone companies wanted more control over their products so you can only buy their phones. That why the industry was so pissed off when Apple released the iPhone. Sprint almost had to file bankruptcy. :???:

Hello Hotforwords,
Just a simple question, where did you find the reference to the dutch word loen?
Since I’m dutch this comment interested me, and I tried to find it in my dutch dictionary, and I couldn’t find it.
An other interesting thing is how is it that the English refer to people from the Netherlands (Nederland or Lage Landen (low lands)) as the Dutch?
wordreet
Sorry to be reviving an old word, but I’m having fun so there!
I often wondered about the ‘Loon’ as a name for a bird, but now realize that it’s merely an American name for what we in the UK call a ‘diver’. Which is a type of waterfowl rather than a single species.
Anyway jcnick mentioned folks believing that cats and dogs might be affected by the moon. And this reminded me of a super poem.
The Cat and the Moon
The cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.
– William Butler Yeats
