Here is a word that is not on the list.
Do you know the origin of the word Shenanigans?
I will be watching on youtube.

Hey Marina,
Age restrictions force me to answer Soda as my beverage of choice. Coca-Cola especially.
Recently I was wondering, what is so “anal” about an “analysis?”
orion_ss1
I USED to drink a couple of two liter bottles of Coke a day. Then 7-up or Sprite to cut back on caffine. Between my doctor and dentist I gave it all up for water and a glass or two of juice in the evening. I do feel better but just a little cheated. Oh well.
The only thing worse than living to be my age is NOT living to be my age.

Once again asking about people’s drinking habits,
there is a pattern going on here.

Hi Marina; Understood this lesson, so no codswollop! Have always used the phrase ‘What utter twaddle’ in this content. I think it would have to be beer over soda. Sodas give me hic-cups, ice cool beers do something else  ….warm flat beer season approches with Autum calling..open fires after brisk walks, to the pub of course! Great to throw off the wellies, sink a few swift ales with other like minded individuals, talk utter twaddle for a few hours, call a cab  its all good  – Thanks again HFWs, perfect end to a lovely day, Have a great week, byeeeeeeeeeeee

Awesome show. ^_^ It’s great to see other intelligent and beautiful women out there. On your homework, I would say I like soda more, particularly Dr. Pepper. Wish they still had Red Fusion, but they don’t.
A word request.
I was wondering where the word Holiday came from?

ÑÐ¾Ð²ÐµÑ€ÑˆÐµÐ½Ð½Ð°Ñ Marina, For your homework, I didn’t drink much beer, although I did drink diet Coca-Cola very often. The most recent beer I drank was St. Pauli Girl non-alcoholic. Now, I mostly drink tea and plain water. That was a very nice T-Shirt you wore in your video; very modest with a nice print pattern. Your dear student, seesixcm6
http://www.youtube.com/annuddermale annuddermale
that was a long & detailed lesson…ty for the hard work put into it…
my drink of preference is water…with a twist of lemon…
beer i can take or leave, and i usually choose to leave it…
soda pop…well, i’m particular to Wink when i can get it; i’ll drink light colas (Sprite, Mt. Dew, 7-Up, Sierra Mist, etc) but i try to avoid ‘em…
Beer or soda?
For the most part, soda POP!
Heineken is my preference when it comes to beer.
You can nurse ‘em without getting plowed.
Kaiser Pilsner or Spaten, when I can get ‘em
Grolsch is another tasty brew..
(Budweiser, Busch, etc. IS soda pop! LOL)
Coca Cola or Dr. Pepper are usually my
first choice. Sprite works, too!
Marina’s pronounciation of Hiram’s name
was interesting. The way Americans say
it sounds more like HIGH-RUM, or HIGH-REM.
I would have guessed a codswallop was a nickname
for a codfish’s privates. Hence the need for a codpiece!
It will be sweet if Bill O’Reilly can get you back on the
show for another go. I bet he has a few more words
he’d like to explore, with the upcoming elections, etc.
Good lesson – 5 stars! XoxO

I usually have a Coke Zero during the day, but a beer on a hot day.
The German beers are best (my favorite brand is Spaten but they are all wonderful – The types of beer present a wider range than in the US – weisbeer, pilsner, dunkel, bok) but unavailable in the US. So depending on the day, give me a Sam Adams or a Corona with lime.
But Marina remember Dorothy Parker’s admonition on drinking:
I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table,
after four I’m under my host.
cmacfamsc
I prefer soda over beer, preferably a sprite or pepsi. Also, I would like to know the origin of the expression “good grief”.

Soda Pop or Beer. Soda with it’s fizzies, remind me of the picture, not quite a real drink, but OK. Beer seems a little more real… but still prefer Tea or coffee now.

Teacher SWEET, I’m a pepper ( Dr. Pepper) that is :!: As far as beer goes I prefer an amber ale if I’m goin to drink beer  If I’m reguiring a buzz I go for whisky , because I drink Crown Royal it’s from England you know. Thats where the Crown comes in  i’m starting to babble I should have a Codswallop :!:

Depends on the situation. But the next day I am usually happier when I have drank soda.
Homework: While at work it is Diet Coke.
When I drink beer it is Bud Light
When I drink beer in Mexico it is Corona (seems to taste better there than here)
Btw that looked like a Corona in your hand at 1:07. Do you have it with lime or straight?
you had a question mark after your sentence. i assumed you had not watched the vid and was taking a guess. i clarified with beer v.s. soda.

http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
dude. i wrote a response to this comment of yours and just before clicking “submit comment” i realized that you wrote “beasts”, not “breasts”.
wtf.
yeah, the entire distribution is kinda weird. like, soda. it’s not one big area like coke or pop, there are three areas, two of them on either side of the us and the third one in between them. (and i’ve never heard anyone say “pop”.)
bgm026
So can you tell me were the word chicano came from?
buzzword
yeah, with soda there is a east coast, west coast thing going on. the two distinct soda areas in the middle are milwaukee/chicago and st. louis. cities with an influx of populations from the east and west coast perhaps. midwest seems to be pop country. we say pop here in ohio. alaska is odd because of the distinct regions with concentrated percentages. probably due to small isolated populations, wonder what manner they were introduced to soft drinks or if the soft drinks arrived with a population.
buzzword
BEER VS SODA!!!! there is that better.

not really.

Homework? Me talking about beer? Naaa,it’s just the norm!
I like Heineken and most dark beers and drink them often enough, some flavored beers like Honey Weiss too.I also drink Budweiser and/or Bud Light. As a teen I drank PBR. Recently I tried Negra Modello(lager I think)and drank it up heartily when travelling for work, only *after* work tho. During work or if I’m just thirsty and not “thirsty” I’ll drink Mt Dew in the morning after My pot of Mississippi Mud,after Noon I generally avoid caffeine so 7UP,Sprite,Squirt,Water or whatever brand.I despise most diet sodas and would call it “true codswallop” or “modern codswallop”.
An old Foreman of mine from years ago, when I had offered him a light beer said these exact words “If I want a glass of water I’ll go to the sink”, ,and he meant it,never did see that guy drink a light beer, worked and partied with him for over 4 years.
TY very much Marina, this thread is interesting for old partiers and dinner-drinkers alike.

Marina,
We just got a new puppy, and we named him “Jake”. This reminded me of a phrase that was popular with the older generation — “Everythings’ Jake”. I think it was popular around the WWII era, and I know it meant that everything was fine or good, but not sure of how it evolved. Thought you might like to investigate!!

I think Crown Royal is 80proof Canadian whisky,Seagrams used to make it but that company dissolved,it is made in Canada but owned by an overseas company.

I have never heard of codswallop, so I prefer balderdash.
The video on YouTube proper starts with a black screen, but the one here starts with the pix of the beer-swilling young lady holding a dog. I think the former autostarts, skipping past the pix, whereas the latter has autostart turned off, so it shows the pix until the user starts the video. Therefore those viewing from youtube.com don’t ever see the first pix. (That’s not the famous sister, is it?)
In this video, the word being discussed is the title. That is the way it should be.

I like to drink soda more than beer (and alcohol in general). I especially like the soda drink that came from the Codd-neck bottles as shown in the video, which are called Ramune (or Lamune, which is the spelling used as the title of a Japanese anime).
Let’s made this a word request, where did the word “Ramune” came from?

Definitely beer (at the moment, Cerveza Pacifico). Soda is bad for you (contains carbonic acid, the same stuff that desolves limestone to create caves).

Hello sweety,Ever hear a doctor use the word PHAGOCYTE yup pronounced just like it looks.love to know what it is.Thanks ahead of time.I went ballooning today ever been?
Definitely beer. When I’m in California I prefer Gordon Beirsch’s Marzen, which is a summer lager made by a micro brewery in San Jose, CA. Where I live in SoCal now, it’s sometimes hard to find so I drink Fat Tire. Here in the Czech Republic I found one called Red Drak that is pretty good. When ever I am overseas I try to taste the local brews.

ah .. beer .. don’t you remember those halcyon days of youthful binging?
One had to develop an almost psychic ability to clear a spark of clarity into a fully addled brain once a forthcoming bout of vomiting was detected. An essential skill required for us longhaired types. This enabled a timely and calm grab of one’s hair into a pony at the back so’s it didn’t get covered in spew when the show started.
Oh, how i envied those skin’eds.

I used to prefer ale in my early teens .. my preferred pubs (in Skipton N.Yorkshire) were .. the New Ship Inn, the Castle (which was right next to the New Ship and owned by the same brewer! crazy!) .. and that other one down that street who’s name i can’t remember.
… wait .. it’s … no .. can’t remember.
I didn’t like that one so much .. probably because it wasn’t so much fun drinking when it’s legal.
oh .. lol .. just rememberd …
we were sat around in a group drinking away with pints of beer in front of us, except for a couple of girls who had cokes.
all the boys were underage, the girls were old enough to be drinking but were on cokes.
.. and some dim cop came in .. and marched up to the girls and wanted to know how old they were. And one said “I’m drinking a coke, you idiot!” .. and his ears burned red and he slunk away.
(i remember that was in the .. one down the high street .. which had Anderton’s Grill in the back – not a pub but some kind of bar kinda thing.)

As I brace for the jeers…. I prefer Soda over beer, and currently drink Diet Dr. Pepper. I prefer regular DP, but am avoiding HFCS for health reasons. Now, were I still in Texas, I could get cane sugar DP, which is absolutely devine. What do you know, a word I’ve never heard.

It’s a trick people use to get free traffic to their web site; choose a really popular site and then register a web site name that is nearly the same but with one letter changed for an adjacent one on the keyboard.
They are relying on people mistyping a url and landing up on their site.
I don’t believe it’s a very effective way to get traffic as it’s totally un-targeted.
If I drink beer I usually prefer to drink “Heineken” or our local beer called “Fohrenburger” (but the burger doesn’t have anything to do with “a burger”. It’s german and means castle ;)

Tragedy
I just recived this email very interesting:
Subject: Tragedy
Presidential candidate, Barack Obama was visiting a primary school and he visited one of the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked the presidential candidate if he would like to lead the discussion on the word ‘tragedy’.*
So our illustrious democrat presidential candidate asked the class for an example of a ‘tragedy’.*
One little boy stood up and offered: ‘If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy.’*
‘No,’ said Obama, ‘that would be an accident.’
A little girl raised her hand: ‘If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.’
‘I’m afraid not,’ explained Obama. ‘That’s what we would ca ll great loss.’
The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Obama searched the room. ‘Isn’t there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?’
Finally at the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand. In a quiet voice he said: ‘If the plane carrying you and Mrs. Obama was struck by a ‘friendly fire’ missile and blown to smithereens that would be a tragedy.’
‘Fantastic!’ exclaimed Obama. ‘That’s right. And can you tell me why that would be tragedy?’
*’Well,’ says the boy, ‘It has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn’t be a great loss… and it probably wouldn’t be an accident either.’
I hope this doesn’t upset anybody. I just thought you all might find this interesting. : I’m from the south and I hear and read this kind of stuff all the time!
By the way I’m voting for Obama!

i was very careful to avoid anything that suggested i cared about my appearance (lol) – i wanted the genuine shabbiness to shine through .. nothing artificial. .. no sweatbands neither. – how could you imagine i’d be so posey!! – well … posy in that particular way.
badges .. yeh .. well .. i was a kid :) .. i liked badges .. shiny shiny colourful things – and rips n worn bits sewn up and patched (in a ragged way, of course) with horribly brightly coloured and textured bits of cloth n stuff.
Strangely, my girlfriends’ mothers always seemed to have a bit of a thing for me (‘cept for one, no matter how hard i tried), despite being so scruffy and a scumbag .. but .. i guess all middle aged women go a bit frothy for young lads.
I got into the habit of periodically getting fed up of the hair and shaving it all off then letting it grow to silly lengths again .. til the lengths got shorter, and about 5 years or so ago i eventually i just kept it shaved.

Dear Marina,
I´ve got one (actually two) word request(s): “WALTZING MATHILDA”
Of course I know that these are two words, but they are used mainly together and I would like to get deeper knowledge about their meaning in this context.
“Waltzing” here for me as a German is easy to translate by the German word “Walz” meaning the travelling of craftsmen in search for work and learning from different masters.
“Mathilda” I learned is the bag that was used by Australian guys “waltzing” through Australia. But where are the deeper ethymological roots of these two words.
Thanks for your investigation and teaching us

… plus, given the low number of questions, too much weight would be on the questions where we fall back on guesswork – which means the confidence limits would be pretty broad. i.e. better than 90% looks good .. but it’s really probably something like: better than 55%..95%

Hi Marina,
The best beer by far is a Root Beer made by a hamburger chain named A&W.
They pull out a frosty, big, fat, heavy glass mug out of a bath of crushed ice then fill it with Root Beer from a draft dispenser. Usually, there is about an inch of foamy “head” on top of the pop/soda. They also have floats that are very good too.
That’s funny Mike, imagine this;
“Hello my dear students, today we have
a video request, from HotForWords.”
and then Marina requests the word.
That would be too funny.

I agree that Thai food is the finest cuisine in the world, at least out of the many that I have tried, closely followed by Indonesian and Malay. I used to try my hand at it myself before I got married but now … well, you don’t keep a dog and bark yourself, do you?
So my best cooking tip is to marry a Thai girl and teach her to say what my wife said to me when I got her home, “Here’s a beer, now get out of my kitchen.”
BTW, have you noticed the new quote of the day? I’m not sure if I did my usual telepathic trick or if Marina is messing with my head.
But I ain’t complaining.

no…maybe it earlier meant I don’t know (didn’t study philology like Marina ;)
but the thing is that there’s a letter you can’t spell the “ü” or “ue”.
And when you write it like that it’s “Buergermeister” so it means “Master of the townspeople”.
I drink beer because the health risks of soda are greater than beer. Wow! now your going have to think about that one for a bit. Try googling heath risks of soda. Then take a look at beer. See if you come up with the some conclusion as I did.
I have only one or two cans of Pepsi a month max. I usually go months without soda. I drink beer only when I need to, which sometimes is twice a month to one per night.

It’s also bad on the heart too. As to much stimulation or caffeine can cause heart attack. It’s to much stress on the heart. Matalelwolf I bet if you took you Blood Pressure after you drank a high caffeinated drink with the head aches that you said you get your BP would be very high. Head aches are a good sign that the BP is to high. When we would get rescue calls of people complaining of a headache we would how stupid. But after we took there BP it was extremely high. We had one lady that her’s was so high that she was hearing noises in her ears. It was actually the blood pounding in her head and causing a swishing noise at her ears. So please be careful with those high energy drinks.

Dear Marina
A few weeks ago I started taking Greek lessons because I’m very interested in other languages (like you) and since tons of words have Greek parts in them, I just decided I was willing to give it a try. Anyway I bumped onto a word that I use in my language (Dutch) but it has a totally diffirent meaning in Greek… I am confused… Can you fix this dilemma for me?
The word is KOSMOS, meaning ‘people’
In Dutch ‘de KOSMOS’ is just everything in space…
Thank you so much!
Post Scriptum: If you’re willing to help me, wear a Greek costume in the movie, I will laugh out loud! (hihi)

I think (gets ideas above his station) maybe M should get the notion this site (and it’s people) is part of her organization … and learn how to close the loop.
http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
what? close the loop? how?
dude, sometimes i really do have difficulties understanding you, lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
well .. like .. the human structure of the organisation.
The instinct is that the organisation is heirarchical. And there’s a notion of status according to superiority and inferiority. Communication in these systems tend to be from the top to the bottom.
In more organic structures there’s more a sense of functions communicating within a system. I.e. people relate to each other in particular ways according to a sense of purpose (and not according to status). And as in organic systems, info flows back and forth because it isn’t obstructed by status.
this is all abstracted because i dont want to start picking on particular details – that’d be embarrassing. … and of course, M can deal with this site in any way she chooses .. just sayin, is all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
oops .. that looks a little squished!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
oh .. “close the loop” .. as in feedback control systems.
http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
umm. to be honest … i still don’t get it. :/
http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
huh? feedback? like, you want her to say whether or not she approves of certain things? that’s the loop?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
i really feel uncomfortable now picking at M .. .. erm .. i guess .. more like …
… oh .. lets pick an example …
putting up a new video.
… so at the moment .. it appears .. we have no idea when it will appear … probably because M is busy preparing it .. and then upoads it to whereever.
so .. she’s the top of the heirarchy as the provider … we’re at the bottom as the recipients.
alternatively,
those of us waiting for the vid don’t really have an idea of timescales.
perhaps there could be refined periodic messages .. such as.
The next video will probably be available in two days.
.. and then modified if what’s expected changes.
i.e. … this is taking longer than expect .. you’ll have to wait an extra day … you know … stuff like that.
.. so she’s managing our expectations by issuing periodic messages rather than us being in the dark. – though i’m not sure where these messages would go in youtube.
.. stuff like that
http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx
ah, i see. well, i think she mentioned somewhere that she uploads a new vid when her current video is ranked #20 or #24 or better in the “most viewed today” thingie. something like that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj
yes .. very vague and indirect and not in the spirit of being involved in feedback – wanting to keep a distance.

Soda is full of high sucrose corn syrup, not good for you. I don’t like American beer, but I occasionally will drink Corona (without the lime). I really like a Polish Beer I get in London that has a plain white label that looks like the name was written by the brewer’s little girl in felt-tip marker. I forget the name. My very favorite beer is Bosbier, brewed with elderberries. It’s only sold near the Grand Prix track at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. I once commented to a barmaid there that they could make millions if they would export it to America. She just smiled and said, “We know.”

A friend emailed this to me today, he is a pastor at a nearby community church.
A Sunday school teacher said to her children, “We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a higher power.
Can anybody tell me what it is?”
One child blurted out, “Aces!”

Isn’t repeating another word for flatulence? If I interpret this correctly the site is being taken down by O’Reilly’s farts :)

oh .. thanks for replying … damn .. i assumed you’d already seen the question and just ignored it (hence the sarcastic tone) … Can you answer me one question more ..?
it puzzles me how you deal with questions you’re asked in this site.
Do you have a definite routine for dealing with questions … or is it a case of you may/or may not feel like answering a question. – or you may not even see a question.
I ask this because i’d noticed you mentioned in the popthing video you’d like a research assistant
- (i know it’s likely that that was the mood of the moment, but i thought i’d check anyway)
- so i thought i’d ask about it in a post … there was no answer .. so i’m not sure if you didn’t reply because you weren’t interested in replying, or because you didn’t see the question.
… erm .. does this make sense?
(ps. i may be bitchy about Bill O’Reilly and how you like him .. i hope you dont mind too much)

I’m going to have to DISAGREE, Doroguya … I hate to do it, and I’m not even going to do it with confidence, but I’m living in London now, and The Tower of London do tours with the famous Beefeater Guards, properly named Yeoman Warders. (Their picture is on Beefeater Gin bottles).
Anyway, they are not allowed to tell any story on the tour that isn’t historically and factually accurate. If something cannot be categorically verified through royal historical records, their comments start, “It is believed…”.
Their story behind the word Codswallop is far more interesting, pre-dates 1876, and would have to be true or it wouldn’t be told.
See if you can find out what the story is … or if you want to know without the effort of investigating, let me know, and I’ll relate it to you.
It’s all about the love…

I try to cut back on soda. I’m drinking Caffiene Free Pepsi right now. I get my caffiene from usually tea or sometimes coffee.
I’ve never been much of a beer person. I tried my first beer back in kindergarten, when my dad left one of his open bottles, and I didn’t like the taste of it. He drinks Budweiser.

Both! Molson Canadian for the beer, and Coca-Cola Classic for the soda.

Homework: I prefer soda, in fact I’m a tea totler (hope I spelled that right) no alcohol at all.
now my request would be the term TEA TOTLER as in someone who doesn’t drink alcohol

I understand that in your city one can get a higher education, a novel approach to post secondary education, educating the discerning connoisseur.
Have you heard anything about the beer academy… has it made the news or bring a lot of folks to town? I know the Canadian beer companies really want to get a grip on the American market.

Mr Capman911, firstly want to wish you a happy birthday for the other day. Sorry I missed it, been snowed under for a while, just come up for some air! Thanks also for your comments before. Coffee is my let down, currently require, several, cups to kick off the day. Already taken note from your advice as this week halved sugar intake, lessening caffine over load too. The ringing in my ears I thought due to my heady days gone playing live music, loudly upto six days a week so did this test on line for low – high pitch sounds; will be seeing the nurse next week for a more professional check. Guess thats why I always have something on the radio or audio book in the back ground through out the day as I work! Silence can be the loudest sound of all. 15 years ago I came a cropa raceing a powerful jet ski, like hitting concrete, subsiquently I lost some mid range hearing in the left ear so now you got me thinking about it. Blood pressure is chilled to the bone, no wooshing noises here or, ear! Appreciate the kindness with foresight and concern. This planet could do with a few more people like you….did I ‘ear right that you will be new TA?

Looks like you spilled something on your shirt Marina =P I love those factor appearances btw hotforprofits may be diggen on your style but she’ll never get to chat with Oreilly.

Diet Dr. Pepper is tasty…Beer also, but I’m bloated at two…mostly water for me – but I’m gonna order a couple of cases of Neuro now and check it out…A good Single Malt Scotch is best in the evening…
Cool on doing the O’Reilly words – but I’d get them done sooner after the show to keep the interest of people tuning in after an appearance – maybe 1 or 2 before if you have enough warning – he could embed you on his website maybe after the show? Or maybe he could be persuaded to do a Marina section on his site linking to all the ‘O’Reilly words’ he introduces on the show?…You’ve been on there enough and he just might go for it…
