i have to say, my style for checking out this kind of stuff is non-existent.

There are times when i’m totally in the right frame of mind and it pours in by the bucket load .. but most of the rest of the time if i attempt to follow any threads, it’s something of a dry drudge.

I have to sort of freak myself out a bit to get the most from it.

basically .. if someone sneaks up behind me and shouts BOO! .. i’ll rush off and analyze what i’m feeling referencing Alaister Crowley, Alchemy, (and now Gnosticism), etc. – whatever seems right.

I’m pretty sure it’s a trade mark name for a brand of cigarette rolling papers. Mostly use by pot heads to roll the weed, the ganja, you know marijuana. Not sure what came first the papers or the zig and zag. But one thing for certain a young mother in the late 60′s named her boy twins Zig and Zag.

    My Dear Teacher,

It has occurred to me that because the English language is finite, you will eventually run out of interesting words to teach us about. That would be a shame and a great sorrow for your students. Thus, I decided to make some suggestions:

First, I read your answer to the SOS question: SOS stands for nothing in particular, and the other acronyms are more correctly called “backronyms” as they were invented later, in order to help remember the code or, more likely, invented by bored sailors who lived long before you were born (such a sad story), etc. However, the more interesting question is this: why is it … —… and not .-.-.- or —…— or -..-..-.. or something like that. More generally, is there something special about the codes invented by Mr. Morse or did he assign them randomly? For a possible home work: where was the first transmission of Morse code over water transmitted/received from/at? Hint: I am literally above that location as I am writing this. Also, how did receivers of SOS signals know where the signal was coming from in the days before radio, GPS, and radar?

Second, it is possible you have already addressed this issue in your lessons, but as I am a lazy student, I have not checked in detail (I did check a little). At the risk of making my teacher angry, I will as my question anyway: Where do the names for groups of animals come from? For example, why is it a “school” of fish, a “pride” of lions, a “flock” of geese, a “gaggle” of ducks, and so forth? Were these names selected with the same care as Mr. Morse’s codes? Do they originate in Latin and Greek? Are they the result of well-educated, but idle rich folks amusing themselves in pre-radio days?

I have more suggestions, but I will save them for another time.

    Your dear (and admiring) student,

    Lucky

    Marina,

A word that I have heard used several times, but that I have never fully understood the meaning or origin of is “catawampus”. Usually, it’s used as a description of position, as in “that desk is sitting catawumpus”. Anyway, I had hoped that you would apply your considerable intellect into deducing the origin and correct meaning of this funny sounding word.

    Many thanks,

I was wondering how the phrase “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” came about. It means you can’t have everything or the best of both worlds. I don’t see a connection. Why would I get a cake if I can’t eat it? Please investigate. Thanks you very much. Keep up the good job!

quiz #3: [The Personality Defect Test]

    Starving Artist

You are 29% Rational, 43% Extroverted, 14% Brutal, and 57% Arrogant.

summary: your personality is defective because you are arrogant, introverted, introspective, gentle, and thoroughly irrational…posessing most of the traits needed to be a starving–and useless–artist. So get out there, write a few short stories that are allegories for the indestructible spirit of socks, and starve!

    To put it less negatively:

    1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

    2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

    3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

    4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

    Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Capitalist Pig.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Haughty Intellectual, the Televangelist, and the Emo Kid.

dkl78594 wrote under the SOS Game that:
Before the year 1912, ships at sea used the Morse code distress signals “CQD”, which means, “Call To Quarters – Danger!”
Since you said at the end of your video that CQD, like SOS, doesn’t stand for anything, I guess CQD is also what folks here are calling a “backronym.”
It’s all beginning to finally sink in….

MARINA – Had an idea. You say that you look for word requests in the Comments section. “That is where I will look for new word requests. You only need to make a word request once as I will search through ALL comments, no matter how far they go back in time!” I was wondering if you might consider adding an emoticon (you know, those  , , , etc.) that signals a word request and is not to be used for any other purpose. Maybe you do page searches on “word” or “Marina” or some other flag word. If a new emoticon is out of the question, perhaps we could select an existing one, e.g., the :?: . On the other hand, maybe you have some ingenious method that works better than my suggestion :!:

The homework Morse code stands for ‘ROFLCOPTER.’ But what’s that? A kind of helicopter? Another mystery after one mystery is solved, ha.
When I try to decode, I am curious about that is there any regularity of those dots and dashes of the alphebat? It seems no at first sight.

What I do is this… I scan through the requests.. and when I come upon one that is interesting… I then do a search and find everyone else who has requested that word. I thought about making a form to request the words.. but then we lose the community aspect of people responding to a request and seconding that request.

So I think it’s pretty good right now.. but yes you are correct.. it makes it harder for me to FIND those requests when I don’t separate them from regular conversation.

Your result for The Personality Defect Test …
    Robot
You are 71% Rational, 14% Extroverted, 43% Brutal, and 29% Arrogant.

You are the Robot! You are characterized by your rationality. In fact, this is really ALL you are characterized by. Like a cold, heartless machine, you are so logical and unemotional that you scarcely seem human. For instance, you are very humble and don’t bother thinking of your own interests, you are very gentle and lack emotion, and you are also very introverted and introspective. [...] You are one of those annoying, super-logical people that never gets upset or flustered. Unless, of course, you short circuit. Or if someone throws a pie at you. Pies sure are delicious.

    To put it less negatively:
    1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.
    2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.
    3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.
    4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

    Word Request: model
How can such a small word mean or refer to so many things? Do a Google search and of course the prettiest meaning of the word is listed first. We need to tell Google to use pictures of HotForWords instead. I guess we all think of gorgeous models first.

Then, there is the word modality and mode. Are they related to the word model?

    P.S.
Hopefully my bolded “word request” can assist in the visual scanning.
Maybe there is a widget where where a user can click a button that automatically inserts the bolded flag “Word Request” to facilitate visual searching as well as using the search box.

  • pedantickarl

Hi lividemerald, I have been trying to use the technique shown in my reply to Marina’s comment above. (then again, it might be below)

Hopefully the bolded key word will help Marina with the visual scanning.

Of course not everyone will do this, so Marina can’t depend on it for using the search box, unless there was a button to automatically insert the keyword.

    Here’s one for teacher

    _ _ ._ ._. .. _. ._ .. … …. _ _ _ _ !!!!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/captainjack63 CaptainJack

Your result for The Personality Defect Test …

    Hand-Raiser
You are 86% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 14% Brutal, and 43% Arrogant.
You are the Hand-Raiser, that annoying kid in class who always had an answer for everything. No doubt, as a child you probably sat in the front of the class, anxiously waving your hand back and forth in the air while your teacher desperately tried to avoid calling on you because you were the ONLY fucking kid that answered her questions. Clearly, the key traits of your personality are your rationality and your extroversion. You are like a little talkative calculator, in other words. You also tend to be rather gentle and less arrogant than most people. Your presence is a bane to everyone’s existence, because you are too nice for your own good and you absolutely will not shut up. So what is your defect, then? Well, you’re boring, and when you’re not boring, you are just plain annoying with your ultra-logical responses and constant need to talk to others. So keep waving that hand in the air, son. I’m still not calling on you. You are too logical, you talk too much, and your humility and gentleness only makes me hate you more, because they make me feel like I almost SHOULDN’T hate you. But I do. Big time. And by the way, the more you wave your hand in class–your extended hand becoming nothing more than a blur as you insanely wave it, thinking we can’t see it–the more smug satisfaction the teacher takes in watching the look of excrutiating pain cross your face as you agonize over not being called on, and the longer we’ll wait to call on you, just because we absolutely love torturing you so.

    To put it less negatively:

    1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.
    2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.
    3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.
    4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

    Compatibility:
Your exact opposite is the Brute.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Braggart, the Haughty Intellectual, and the Robot.

    Compared to other takers

    * 71/100 You scored 86% on Rationality, higher than 71% of your peers.
    * 48/100 You scored 57% on Extroversion, higher than 48% of your peers.
    * 23/100 You scored 14% on Brutality, higher than 23% of your peers.
    * 24/100 You scored 43% on Arrogance, higher than 24% of your peers.

Hand-Raiser?? WTF!!?? I don’t ever remember raising my hand more than twice in class. I thought I would just let someone else raise their hand wasting their energy while I try to burn down the school by putting staples in the electrical outlet.

But I do. Big time. And by the way, the more you wave your hand in class–your extended hand becoming nothing more than a blur as you insanely wave it, thinking we can’t see it–the more smug satisfaction the teacher takes in watching the look of excrutiating pain cross your face as you agonize over not being called on, and the longer we’ll wait to call on you, just because we absolutely love torturing you so.

hand raiser? nah, I just waited till everyone else said something to see if they knew, and if no one had it right I’d just yell the right answer

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/foxbow15 foxbow

    o put it less negatively:

Many eons ago a cave man was chowing down on a dead, rancid critter he found while walking through a temperate woods. After a few pounds of the suspect meat he had to take an emergency dump. As the excrement exited at high speed it made a “shhhi” sound, followed be a chunk that made a “t” sound when it hit the dry leaf litter of the forest floor. Now to survive back then a body had to note every sound and commit it to memory,so,the caveman, after he recovered from the rancid meat, walked around saying “ssshhhi”-”T” for many days.Whenever a tribe member happened to take a dump nearby he said “shhi-t”,soon the entire tribe was saying it,natural progression of speech chananged the verb to a noun and there you have it-shit.

Relay the above to your history teachers and see if they think it is plausible,if not, maybe they *dunno shit*.

Marinas little dog Kobe probably thinks the word for shit is “shi-p”,cause it makes a different sound when it hits the carpet!

  • fianchetto1

I wonder what effect my request for “collective nouns” had on her ability to seperate it from the regular conversation…heheh

and I wonder if she may be hinting at an upcoming lesson…

Though I must say that on the surface, I like the idea of seperating the requests, but have reservations about not having them in the thread, as it seems most ppl are posting here, and as the video spurs the natural conversation, word requests here have better context…

If we only put word requests in one place, Our Dear Teacher would only have a dry list of words to pick from, whereas here, she gets a bit of context and others are more likely to reply with their opinions, perhaps educing them to come up with requests of their own.

So, I would say to Marina, “You do that voo-doo that you do so well!”

And do it any way you like it, love!

more frequently used letters seem to be associated with shorter signals, like e = . and t = _ , but I don’t know the algorithm they used when defining the code, Just that’s what it APPEARS to be the only rule that I can easily surmise.

Nifty fact: The code for “V” is “…_”, read aloud is “dih-dih-dih-dah”. V = Roman numeral 5. During WWII as England popularized Churchill’s “V for Victory, to boost morale during the blitzes, the BBC would frequently play Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (the rhythm of the theme is the same). It seemed to have the intended effect on morale, despite the fact that Beethoven was German-born.

I read it in one of my courses in webdesign and i was thinking what the hell this word could come from.

I like and use your idea Karl, but I put the word I want to be used in bold letters. So I may change what I am doing to what you are saying. Marina could put up a box at the top saying for word requests put Word Request . in bold letters followed by the requested word. Maybe if enough of us started doing it that way the rest would catch on. One other idea. You know like in a word processor you have a B for bold a U for underline maybe a emoticon to click on to turn just that word bold. Then unclick the emoticon to resume in regular print. Just some more ideas.

Ok with all this talk about ROFLCOPTERS. I have to show you guys a video of Justin Chi. This little boy at the age of 4 started to fly R/C Helicopters. Anyone here who flies R/C helis knows this is the most difficult aircraft to fly of all R/C. Justin now 6 years old, started flying simulators when he was 18 months old. His first solo fixed winged flight at 2 3/4 years old. His first helicopter solo flight was 4 years old, flying a large gas powered heli that costs around $2,000. Justin has a fleet of helis costing around $12,000. Remember if you crash R/C there is no reset button. Repairs are costly.
Now this video is Justin is flying a very high preforming heli that is fully aerobatic and capable of flying inverted. Justin does some difficult maneuvers that you only see the experts do. One of those stunts is called the “Chaos”. Its where the heli stays in one place as the tail rotates wildly around that spot. It looks like the heli is out of control. Very difficult maneuver to do because it requires good timing on moving the sticks on the radio transmitter. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this. Justin does some common and advanced maneuvers with the precision of world champions.

…and each member listed would have a link (if they so desire)

woah!! .. did you call me “dude”?

(i guess this is academic in any case, but… what the hell …)

maybe some or even most are .. it’s not certainty.

the problem splits into 3 parts:
    1. Is it a good idea to have a consistent way to get info about a member
    2. the provision of a user info page
    3. the accessability of a member’s name

    1. – is it a good idea? .. well . the benefit’s got to be considered in balance with the effort and resources needed to provide the info.

    2. the provision of a user info page
is there any reason why anyone here should be a member of youtube? Maybe (assuming it’s considered important to have a consistant index of members) an easy solution would be to require HFW members to be YouTube members.
On the other hand, a HFW user info page would be tailored to this site. (but that requires effort)

    3. the accessibilty of a member’s name:
we should consider the use cases – the different circumstances where someone might want info on a member.
Obviously, if the person you’re interested in has just posted on the current thread, then you could click his/her name and you’d be straight there (assuming this links to the same place as the index links).
Other cases might be where somone’s been gone for a while and the simplest solution is to go to the index and find the name there.
Anotehr case may be that you cant quite remember the name and you need to search through similar names.

Of course, this all requires effort, so it’s not likely to happen .. it’s just a thought about making a coherent reference for HFW members info.

You are 29% rational, 71% extroverted, 43% Brutal, 29% Arogant.
    You are the Hippie!

Characterized by a strong sense of extroversion, irrationality, gentleness, humility, and a faint scent of marijuana, you no doubt frolic through fields preaching peace and free love! Immediately following that, you then frolic to the hospital with herpes! You are probably either very spiritual or needlessly paranoid about “the man”, like most hippies, as a result of your focus on intuition and feelings over cold, brutal logic. You probably enjoy poetry, especially beatnik ultra-liberal crap about how horrible fascism is, even though your suburbanized, sheltered idea of “fascism” is having to pay two dollars per gallon at the gas pump. You are also very, very social. And like any hippie who would have no qualms about hitch hiking across the country just to meet some interesting people, you also love to interact with others, even complete strangers. Though I highly doubt they love to interact with you! Because we know most any hippie is peace-loving and humble, it stands to reason that you, as well, are terribly gentle and humble, almost to the point of revulsion. Your carefree attitude of peace and harmony is probably very, very sickening to realists or cynics or anyone who isn’t a hippie, to tell the truth. In short, your personality is defective because you are overly emotional, extroverted, gentle, and humble–thus making you an annoying hippie. Now go do your drugs and have sex with filthy bearded men in tye dye shirts.

    To put it less negatively:

    1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

    2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.

    3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

    4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

    Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Sociopath.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Televangelist, and the Robot.

where does “hotforwords” come from or mean?

  • myhai11111

Hey, Marina. How is it going? I am new here, i just checked your list and I would like to know the origin of the word “fuck”. I mean not to be rude or anything, it’s just a word at the end of the day, right? Right? .
    Thanks! Oh, and kisseeeeeeeeeeeeeees
    We all love you !

  • duke veritas

Things to make you go “Hmmm”:

“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” is Freud’s quote about HIS OWN HABITS when people applied psychoanalytic methodology to it.

Yet, cylindrical objects and conflicts in OTHER PEOPLE’S lives all revealed significant problems integrating sexually-related information and drives.

    Hmmm

  • http://www.google.com/ Capman911

Marina I believe you have a little competition as far as word origins. She even mentions you in her video. I thought it rather funny the way she portrayed your style of teaching.

I don’t think she’ll take your family away from you. She doesn’t have the fun and friendliness that you give to us.

  • bechamboy12

i am requesting a word, cyber, i know what it means but have not took the time to look up the origin and such things, i was hoping that you would do a video on the word cyber. since it is about technology i was wondering when the word was created/invented, and also, of course, where it comes from

  • http://www.google.com/ Capman911

Hi Myhai11111. Welcome to the site. Marina has had such a over whelming request for the etymology of the F word that she was going to do a special video just on that word. She didn’t say when she would make the video, but maybe it will be very soon. Until she makes the video here is one that James one of our members here has done on his own. So maybe this will hold you over until Marina’s video comes out. Thanks for understanding.

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

Capman911, my original idea was to continue with requesting words within the conversation threads, but to flag word requests with a special emoticon. Your idea of an emoticon to click on for bold or underline would be along those lines. PedanticKarl also proposed the use of bold. However, I think sometimes people want to use use bold and underline for other purposes. I am still of the opinion that a special emoticon of some kind that has no other logical purpose would work best. Maybe an emoticon that is not yellow (right now, only Mr. Green stands out from the crowd). On the other hand, an emoticon, however visible to the eye, may not be searchable. My thought is that as the library of words/phrases/games grows, it will become more and more difficult for Marina to scan all the posts for word requests. Maybe someone more technically skilled and more creative than myself will come up with an idea to facilitate Marina’s arduous task of word request tracking.

  • http://www.google.com/ Capman911

Hey Mrsean22795, welcome to the site. Marina has had a lot of request for that word “word” so give here some time as she goes back through all of the posts and picks out the most requested words. She then does an etymology of the word and it’s meanings. Here is something that might help in the future. Type in Word Request in bold letters and then the word that you want her to look up. That is so it will make it easier for her to see the request. IE WORD REQUEST Word. Thanks for joining the site and have fun.
    Mike

  • http://www.google.com/ Capman911

How about a red emoticon that says word request when your mouse hovers over it like the rest of the emoticons. That way a red would stick out very easily. and be spotted.

Hi frewju, Marina has answered that question a few times in her past comments.

Since Marina is an etymologist / philologist, she has a passion for words. To be ‘hot’ for something means that one is passionate about that thing. So, HotForWords means being Passionate For Words.

If you look at the Lessons list in the upper left hand corner of the page, you’ll also see videos about the word “Hot” and “Hot (Synonyms)”

  • pedantickarl

Hi leewillijr, lots of people have asked for that word. I’m not sure if Marina will dive into that one or not. However, she did make reference to that word in her Floccinaucinihilipilification video. The reference to the lung disease word starts at 2:10

    G-sibs??? Whats that?

Yea I need more simulator time before I put my bird though stunts like that. I know how to do them but I like to get a bit more proficient before I have to spend time on repairs. If you haven’t already you can see my video of me doing my 5th flight on my heli.

I have never seen the Redbull heli yet in person. I seen some video documentary about the guy that flies it and how he wants to kick it up a notch.

CJ- G-sibs (God Children  ) – an early lesson from HFWs, ‘Gossip’ – God Parent, that would be me, so use G-sib(lins) since lesson. Benny Boy is 3yrs, Wilsa lad is 4yrs, Joe Joe now 7yrs. Against parental wishes  I include them in most home work assignments, they love HFWs; Unlike friends and family, they agree with my heart felt sincerity as they see the fun, not the obsession  They ask after Marina too, which raises eyebrows from parents; They all love Marina loads, even one of their teachers stopped me to find out what HFWs was all about  – so have to keep them focussed on lessons virtual or otherwise  – I love them dearly CJ; Automatically slip into their ‘here and now’ oceanic phase, child like state when visiting them. Everything else goes on hold for the few hours each week I see them (such is the inner child in me  ) – first its football to release the the endless energies, refreshments and snacks, followed by guitar lessons(rock star ambitions), universe books, DVDs, pod casts. We conclude uni-lesson with drama, flying light speed to various planets, stars and so on (always bumping into Darth Vader :???: ) – drinks, then 20 mins of one word in Thai (Their choice of langauge, must be that Thai shirt I sometimes wear  ) End with book of their choice. Joe Joe has an extra 20 mins with reading and spelling….one day I hope to have my own children, just so hard finding that all important, Miss almost perfect partner, for this, Mr. not quite but good enough, me   – The RCH lessons on hold as Huey is in for repairs…my fault  .

The Red Bull air show was in London. Fast zippy planes wizzing back and forth but before they began, some helicopters showed off. Utterly awesome and blown away, didnt seem natural seeing a huey fly upside down, caused nervousness so more beer was required to aid a settle  – Didn’t see much of the planes thinking about it as caught up with old friend hadnt seen in ages, so had alot to catch up on…over a few ales, tut, oh the excuses

CJ, you mentioned you get ESP with your sister? Know what your are thinking  – I just believe so it regulary happens, ever since a kid. Gut instincs of someone before the phone rings, dreams the night before you bump into them next day plus other more obvious ‘events’ that came true. It all leads to how closely connected we ALL are. That string thing the scientists are looking for hhhmmmmm, well, the Chinese call it Chi, an endless force, when practiced, works! Westerners are a little bit ignorant to think otherwise, or not to believe. In any case, it works often enough for me. I am guessing for you CJ, being all at sea much, you are most open to these ESP moments. I understand there are some who just are unable to relate, more sensatives souls can and do. I find it fun, a little madness helps too  On occassions, for weeks at a time I get nothing. When all at once it can be three or four hours wizzing through me of thoughts and feelings, just got to right them down, make apologies to leave any meeting, find a place to right. Reflect next day or two. Recently, my cousen Louise in New Zealand gave birth, I called mum before to tell her that I had a feeling we should get news today. No suprises when mum confirmed she had a call from NZ with a newbie into the family. I guessed the name Joseph ( clouded by my G-sib Joseph, maybe?)- instead Joel was given, followed by, er hum, Mathew  – great to hear more from you about this CJ, what your experiences may be  Keep up the excellent TA work you do, enjoy very much your input. No less, hear from you again and soooOOOooooon

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/captainjack63 CaptainJack

What an insightful comments you posted. Nice to learn a bit about the people here.

One time I picked up my phone to call my sis and she was already on the line as I was dialing her number. She said why did you do that. I told her that I was calling her. I didn’t even hear the phone ring. I guess the phone company is a bit slow on making the phone ring. It really freaked us out when all this happened. We are getting use to it now. Now its more like “Didn’t you get my ESP message?” She would say yes, but I sent it to Mind Mail.

I know about Chi. I studied Karate for about 3 years and learned about it from one of my other instructors. One can spend many years perfecting it.

Westerners are overwhelmed with advertising campaigns that has clouded their thinking. I know this well because Im partly to blame on developing it. Now if you made commercials of using my set of lessons on DVDs on how to use Chi then people would be open to it more. Or do a prime time TV show that encourages people to buy the DVD lessons.

    Thanks for your comments.
