Now retired for 17 years, I am proud to say I hadn’t worn a watch for 5 years before I retired.

There is at least one clock in every room in the house ( including 2 of 3 bathrooms ), in my car, in the computer on my bike, and they even had one or two where I worked. I expect this is true for most people reading this. At least now many clocks reset themselves when the power goes out.

Actually this was for over 20 years before I actually started carrying my phone with me every where I went.

I literally FEAR the day we start implanting them ( watches and phones ). At least now you can turn the silly thing off if you want ( and if you dare ).

I destroyed every windup watch crystal ever put on my wrist. I have scratched the crap out of my digitals, and even my Pulsar watch, all just because I am a knock around boy! When I am dashing around corners, etc. it just seems to happen – oops! I only set an alarm clock as a backup. As a rule, my internal alarm goes off before the alarm clock can sound (years of self imposed operant conditioning. I can usually tell the time of day within 5 minutes, or so, of the actual time by simply observing sun shadows. Ummm….I haven’t got a cel phone and haven’t worn a watch for about ten tears. Wierd, huh?

  • http://mentalgrammarhasbeensetup.blogspot.com aLx

is the vid flipped or are you wearing your watch on your right arm? that’d be soooo mac. :PP

  • tryant

I wear My watch(cheap Timex)alot, especially to work, often it is the only watch on the job site. People bring cellphones(Me too)but don’t carry them all the time so I am asked “what time Ya got?” often, saves a walk to the cellphones. Between the radio, phones, and My watch it’s easy to know the time.Even with so many ways to tell time I still feel naked without it on My wrist.

I don’t sell the damn things but do have plenty of respect for Timex dig watches,a $30 Timex will last well.

I used to wear a wrist watch everyday. My old $25 dollar watch was getting old and I wanted something a bit more geeky but not to look too geeky. I found the Quiksilver company and they had this Tide watch that tells you what the tides will be like at popular surf locations. I don’t surf the waves but I do need to know the tides. So I went out and bought the Moondak watch.
Im very rough with watches, and I have to say I’m impressed with this watch. I beat the heck out of it and it keeps on working. There is not even a scratch on it yet. Trust me its been whacked on the hulls of steel ships many times. I can wear still wear it out on a date. Interestingly enough this is the most expensive watch I think I have ever purchased that I no longer wear daily. It sits on the shelf now and I use my cellphone. I to think watches have become jeweler now and are no longer needed if you carry your cellphone everywhere. :???: I swear the damn phone has fused to my head. I hate that thing. Oh yea I still haven’t picked up a iPhone yet. I still have until Feb 22nd for my contract to die.

In 1978 I decided to quit my job as a clinical psychologist and become a full time freelance cartoonist. I took off my watch in the hospital parking lot, placed it under the rear wheel of my car, and backed my car over it while I was leaving my job for the last time. 70,000 cartoons later, and I still haven’t worn a watch…by the way, does anyone have the correct time?

Yes, I still wear a watch, despite being retired and having clocks all over the apartment, and need it mostly to know what day it is.
I have a cellphone, but never look at it to tell the time because it is usually switched off unless I need to use it.
I also wear the watch on my right wrist out of habit; I started to do that so I could see it without moving my hand from the joystick.

Dear Marina, For your homework, I always wear a watch to insure I’m on-time for meetings and to produce my work on schedule. It was nice to watch your beautiful, slender legs and see you in the strapless, small dress you wore. I also like how well you use music in your videos, and read that you composed music in two of your videos. Your use of music caused me to relearn my guitar skills and I might shop for a keyboard, next. Previously, you got me to study another foreign language.
So, you’ve inspired me to improve many personal skills. I say this because getting better is a good thing, and not because … I want us to have delicious fudge, together!

When i was just a boy growing up I never wore a watch, i didn’t need too, either my parents told when I needed to do something or there was freetime when I just had to find something to keep myself occupied (playtime as it was called) as I grew older it became more of a necessity as a person takes on more responsibiltys in their daily life in order to fufill usually someone elses exspectations (be at a certain place at a certain time) i don’t currently wear a watch i just recently stoped; then there is watch as an activity, i watched the game, I watched a show , I watched the cars driving along the road. Then there is watch used as a noun such as I stood watch as you described that also may take a watch to make detailed time records or observations.

Here is a transcript of the key points:
Watch comes from the Old English wæccan, which means to keep watch, to be awake… it is basically the same word as the Old English wacian which also means to be awake.. where the word wake comes from.

Now.. this word basically meant keeping watch at night as a form of protection…. it transferred around 1585 to a nautical term as the period of time in which a ship’s crew would remain on deck.. their watch. In 1440, they called a clock that would wake people a watch and the in 1588 it started referring to a small timepiece.

So… the word watch meant to keep watch at night.. where the verb comes from today and is related to the word wake as well.. and it eventually referred to a clock that would wake someone.. like an alarm clock today.. and eventually referred to a small time-piece that you wear on your wrist.

Maybe you can help me. I bought a pocket watch in Germany called a “Listen” watch. One of the wind stop gears broke in half, and no American watchmaker I have found has had talent enough to make this simple repair. I’ve had it apart and together 5 times in the past 20 years trying possible replacement gears, all to no avail. I just made sketches to keep track of disassembly / assembly process, and had no problems doing the work myself. All the American watchmakers did was complain that the watch was too cheaply made, etc. but I think they either didn’t have the skill or were just lazy. The watch certainly isn’t cheap. Can you fabricate a working replacement gear if I give you the specs?

ok … i have the essential background to Marina’s word. (and i didn’t cheat by looking)

Now .. i was wondering .. the original word “wacian” – how much of a twist would it be to move it from being awake to being perceptive? I’m assuming that the Wiccans are somehow related to this. … if it’s related i’m assuming “Wicca” might mean something like “enlightned” – a wild guess… probly completely half-assed. But fun guessing.

oh .. and M says “wacian” means keeping watch at night as a form of protection. Is that where “wake” comes from in the sense of a funeral “wake”?

well .. i dont know … the original book was about a bunch of messed up scruffy hasbeens. All messed up and pathetic and full of dark angst.

But .. Hollywood has hold of it .. so the producers will require lots of “awesome” .. and “cool” … and lots of (struggles for a synonym for “awesome”) “awesome” “kickass” special effects .. etc etc.
Which, of course, is counter to mood of the book.

    sigh

they have to do that to get the masses through the doors to pay for the production.

I think it would have been better as a lowish budget tv series on an obscure cable channel so they couldnt be tempted by special effects and had to be forced to consider the plot to be the primary force.

    My dear Teacher,

Is watch one word with two meanings,

or is it two words that are spelled the same?

  • fianchetto1

Homework: Yes, dear teacher, I do.

Now for another suggestion for a video (It’s ok….I got the list-of-collective-animals thing out of my system… for now  )

I suggest a discussion of the different ways we agree or disagree…not just in America, but the world over.

I think it interesting that even when we agree, different cultures do so in different ways. For example, most of us, on seeing someone nod their head, assume agreement, and shaking the head to be a non-verbal demurral…but I read somewhere that there exists a culture that does these the other way.

Then we have so many ways to agree/disagree verbally:
    Romanian: da / nu
    French: oui / non
Russian: да / нет <included especially for you, Dear Teacher
    German: ya / nein
    Greek: Ναι / δεν
    Italian: sì / no
    Hindi: हाँ / नहीं है
    Japanese: はい/ いいえ

…to name fewer than the collective nouns….

and just in English, we have many ways as well:
    “yes”, “yup”,”uh-huh”, “no”,”nope” “uh-uh”, etc.

I think it would make an interesting topic for you to discuss, and perhaps stretch out of Europe and the West, maybe even could mean a tax-deductible business trip to the orient for direct cultural research :-)

I used to wear a watch, but then I decided to stop as it became really annoying while playing the piano.
However, I’d heard that some women really find it attractive when men wear watches. So maybe, for a special occasion, it would be a good idea.

  • sniperskaya

Marina, If you are a watch watcher are you a voyeur?
I had a Rolex, model 6263, that I bought a long time ago. Sold it for lot more than i paid for it. Don’t usually wear a watch now. My cell phone is more accurate and will automatically reset when I cross time zones. The TV, radio and my car all tell the time too. If I need a watch when I’m outside the US where I can’t have a cell, I get a cheap Timex.

well .. i was having a look at some stuff where Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung were comparing notes in relation to Gnosticism etc.

Joseph Campbell – i remember the phrase “follow your bliss” in relation to that huge mish-mash of stuff i got immersed in about Gnosticism recently. – it’s a very similar … damn .. what’s the word .. “principle” will have to do. (i wish i wasnt illiterate).

In fact .. i remember reading that the treatment of Gnosticism of being revelation from within in combination with the use of myths to convey meaning (rather then statements of truth) rings well with Jungian analysis. … or something like that.

not familiar with Eliade tho. I shall have to check up.

However, now i’m not quite so crazy due to not being enraptured, it’s all flat, wordy information, rather than blistering revelations of spirit.

I stopped wearing a watch years ago, when I realized that I spent most of my time in rooms with all clocks or near computers with on-screen clocks.

  • http://zez.mygamesonline.org semalf

    yeah i wear a watch!
okay look at it this way…if you have pants with no pocket or you cannot afford a cell phone, then you can wear a watch
if you cannot take your phone out w/o getting in trouble (like in class) you can look at your watch
if oyu cell phone breaks or the battery dies, you can look at your watch
when you wear a suit and your cell phone is buried somewhere, or if you lose your phone, you can wear a watch
if you suddenly must leave and run from the mafia, you can look at your watch if you forget or cannot bring your cell phone
if you are working out and are very active, you will not want to bring a cell phone, but instead a watch, which can also have a stopwatch which may come in handy
or, say you are with you girlfriend having a night of passion, you are going to need a watch to tell time, rather than getting up and getting ur phone out ur pocket to tell time

so, a watch can be very handy, besides that you can look at it at any time, whereas with a cell phone, you cannot sometimes

I would like to request the word ‘Bargain’.

oh .. might as well spill it here .. my last little mini revelation was the skull and crossbones is a gnostic symbol in the same way as the upward and downward pointing pentagrams.

I.e. the crossbones represents the manifest world, and the skull represents the hidden spirit within .. i.e. .. the ghost within the machine.

Gnosticism seems generally to feel unbound by imposed set of laws and only those morals that are revealed from within are counted as valid. Hence, the continued desire by organized religion to crush gnosticism. … And the association of Gnosticism with anarchy .. and piracy.

Lol, these are the same reasons (along with my cell phone) I stopped wearing a watch as well.

  • yomero

It seems like certain words can be categorize under various headings:
    The intentional combining of words,
The root of words coming from Latin, Greek, Old English or any other foreign languages,
    Misinterpretations,
Changing to suit one owns language which changes the spelling,
    Mistakes,
    Phonetic spelling,
A combination of any of the above. (The above are examples and not a complete list)
Then again every generation comes up with its own new words that define the influences of its time.
Just in the 20th century many good examples of the parturition came about to represent the history of the events of the day.
The roaring twenties had it share, the war years too help shape the language, the fifties made its contribution in words, slang and expressions. It would be easy to remember the popular lexicon of the early part of the 20th century if one lived at the time. Maybe some of your astute students can research generational representative of each era.
Then Marina you can put your creative spin on these with minimal production cost, certain lessons with a theme. Let’s say in the 1960′s many words appeared in use at this historical time. Words like hippy, groovy, reefer, pot, bummer, balling, Melvin, bogart, Frisbee, ginchy, press ham, skank and blitzed. In your presentation of one of these words you could dress the part, Marina as a little hippy chick with tie dye shirt, head ban and bell bottoms. You could wear a thong but in those days thongs were sandals worn on the feet. The psychedelic music is playing in the background, (Ultimate Spinach), Blacklight with Day Glow posters, beaded curtains and a water pipe, for prop purposes only.
“Hello my groovy students what’s the haps, today lesson is really far out, grab a bean bag chair and sit in a circle.”
This concept is just a variation of a theme. The same can be done with sports, like surfing slang and expression. Picture us picturing you on a surfboard in a bikini.
You seem to be already heading in this direction so hopefully my comment will stir up some creative juices.
No doubt you are surrounded with smart and creative people, it’s for certain you’re aware of the concept of knowing your audience, this is where the seed of inspiration lies.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj

    where do words come from?

    are they created or discovered?

there must be a massive, but finite number of possible vocalisable (?) sounds which will at some point be associated with meaning and turned from random sounds into words.

for instance: “squeeplizongibble” has yet to be assigned meaning.
So i claim it. And i define it’s meaning to be “that sensation you feel when you think you’ve lost your wallet, but discover you actually put it in a different pocket”. – i.e. a mixture of relief and disappointment at your lack of self discipline.

  • tokah the great

    These are good reasons. lol

ah ..well .. you gotta understand i’m not a language oriented person .. so i tend not to bother too much with being exact in my use of it. (more image oriented – which i would then have to laboriously translate into words – with all the problems that entails)

So .. my use of the word “rapture” is more a passionate indication of strength of feeling and spirit and … damn .. what’s the word .. the ability to drive through the veil and experience the underlying meaning rather examine via an intellectual struggle with words.

… so i think rapture is the wrong word. .. peace wasn’t in there, for instance.

they are cultural constructs. they can be both created and shared, same with all other cultural constructs. but as far as claiming it? there may be a finite number of possible human vocalizations but there are an infinite number of possible meanings that can be applied to any given sound. you can’t claim ownership of something that exists subjectively. by saying a word, one is, in a way sacrificing ownership. this may relate, if language weren’t a commons

I would like to request a word. Could you tell us about the word meaning? By this I mean I would not like to know not just its etymology but in fact the many meanings of meaning. I was thinking you could find all the meanings of meaning and perhaps find a meaningful average meaning, in fact, a mean average of meanings in a meaningful way. Others might find this a meaningless exercise and demean it but it would mean a lot to me.

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

I wore a watch until I graduated from high school, then stopped wearing one because of how uncomfortable it was on my wrist. Fast forward 25 years. In 1997, I began a 9-year career swing as a casino dealer. Shift bosses absolutely require that dealers wear a watch in the pit. To be honest, a watch is indispensable due to the 20-minute increments of the work schedule. Also, casinos don’t have clocks on the wall, and cell phones must be turned off at all times while dealing. I haven’t dealt in over two years now, but I continue to wear a watch, despite the discomfort, because I need it in the classroom. The wall clock is just not reliable. In a more general sense, my cell phone does accompany me everywhere, and when I do take it along, it isn’t always on. I leave the cell phone in the truck when I hike or rock scramble (no signal available anyway). Maybe someday there will be a timepiece wrist implant, a timeplace eye implant, or perhaps just a timepiece “tatoo” that can be applied or peeled off. I’m game.

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

I meant my cell phone does NOT accompany me everywhere. Neither does my brain.

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

In my opinion, using existing town names and granting them new meanings is not exactly inventing new words. I’ve been known to adapt foreign words or place names, so I’m somewhat guilty as well. But most of the words I invent are truly new ones. Sometimes I google to verify. In fact, I’ve “invented” a few words that, when googled, were found to already exist. When that happens, I usualy discard the word and heave a great sigh of disappointment.

  • sean68

I haven’t worn a watch in years, and when I did I always found it to be uncomfortable and often irritating. Since I always carry my cell phone, it does extra duty as a timepiece and an alarm clock. The funny thing is, I hardly use it as a phone.

I agree. There are a number of words that are spelled identically but which have such different meanings (and may differ in pronunciation, too) that you have to assume they have different etymologies. One example that immediately comes to mind is “lead.” It can be a verb that means to guide others. Or it can be a heavy element (Pb). It would be interesting to see a list of such words.

The title of the lesson made me remember this funny advertisement for a French bank:

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobs_your_uncle Bob

It’s a little known fact that the world’s first wrist timepiece was invented by none other than Alexander the Great, using photochromic dyes. Photochromic materials are ones which change colour according to the amount of ultra-violet radiation falling on them, and the most common application of these nowadays are probably Reactions® lenses for spectacles.
Alexander the Great used these photochromic dyes by soaking rags in them until they were saturated. He would then allow them to dry in a dark cupboard and tear them into narrow strips which he would tie around his wrist when he awoke every morning.
During the day these strips of material would gradually change colour as they were exposed to more and more light, and Alexander, with experience, was able to tell the time by the degree of colour change.
However he didn’t call his invention a watch – he called it Alexander’s Rag Time-band.

I have an 1880′s pocket watch I ware for historical reenactments, but don’t ware one on my wrist. There is always a time piece around as well as my phone nowadays.

  • hutchiee

I stopped wearing a watch years ago when I realized I had my phone on me 24/7 and wearing a watch was more or less useless. Most of the time I don’t have to look at my phone for time anyway, there’s always a computer or phone or PDA or oven or thermostat or car or microwave or wall clock or TV or stereo or VCR around if I care enough what time it is.

PS I just love having to change all of this stuff with Daylight Savings Time. Not.

A locally popular etymology is that the name “Hollywood” traces to the ample stands of native Toyon or “California Holly”, that cover the hillsides with clusters of bright red berries each winter. But this and accounts of the name coming from imported holly then growing in the area, are not confirmed. The name Hollywood was coined by H. J. Whitley, the Father of Hollywood. He and his wife, Gigi, came up with the name while on their honeymoon, according to Margaret Virginia Whitley’s memoir. Another story refers the name to Harvey Wilcox, who bought land in the area for development of homes. His wife, Daeida, met a woman on a train who mentioned that she had named her Ohio summer home Hollywood. Daeida, who liked the name, gave it to their new development.

  • geronimo

Either that or it comes from the fact that Holly was really a dude.

I still wear a watch when I am going out to dinner or dressing up for an occasion, as I find it easier and more polite to glance at my watch to tell the correct time, rather than grabbing my cell phone. there’;s a problem, isn’t there, in the study of meaning .. essentially, it chases its own tail. There’s no ultimate foundational meaning from which to build. The meanings are all relative to other meanings.

    hi there, dear teacher,

i am from belgium, and older people in our region who speak dialect use a word for a thick wintercoat : PALTO.
strange, because this word is not related to the official dutch language we speak, neither to french, from where we adopted many words in our dialect.
even more strange is the fact that , when we travel some 1000 miles to the east or south, we find this word PALTO in Greece, Slavian languages and , no doubt, you use this word also in Russian !

can you find out where the word PALTO comes from, and how it is possible only older people use it here in Flemish dialect here in Belgium, a few 1000 miles away from the (as i presume) original language area ?

looking forward to get an answer to this linguistic phenomenon.

take care and hear you soon, i hope

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj

    well ..

meaning is actually derived from experience and presence in the world.

Definitions and explanations of meaning tend to fall back on reason and references to related meanings. You can’t create an experience of meaning (and thus an understanding) via a rational explanation.

That’s my bare-faced statement of my position.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n2NXuQ5ako mijj

    … oops .. missed a bit …

that’s why reading an explanation from a book will in no way be the equivalent of an explanation from one who has a revelationary (?) understanding of the meaning and is meaningfully expressive in the explanation.

There’s more than reason going on there.

It’s like the difference between experiencing music and reading the score.

In my youth, I regarded wearing a watch as a sign of servitude to mechanical time making a person unhappy. When I entered the workforce, I learned that if i was late to work, or late to lunch, or worked past my eight hours, I was sad. Wearing a watch brought me happiness. I’m a beast and I break watches frequently. It was a constant source of unhappiness. So, I decided to buy a bunch of “work” watches to have on hand, so I wouldn’t mourn a broken watch. It got out of hand and I bought a couple nice watches, too, including a used Rolex. Soon after I bought all these watches, I retired from work. I’ve learned to wear watches for other occasions now. I wear them when I’m out in the field to make certain I get back to the car by sundown. I also wear them on game day (I watch NFL and NBA) as a reminder not to miss the games. I sometimes wear the Rolex to show the world I’m not a deadbeat, even thought my clothes suggest otherwise. I’ve ruminated and pondered on these silly emotions and am now of the opinion that it means nothing at all. Happy ending. Anyone want to buy a watch?

a word that is an arrangement of letters for their sound….it’s onomatapoeia.

when associated with meaning, that meaning must also be conveyed by an agreement on a common definition (considering context for words with multiple meanings)

That common definition is comprised of…..more words, each with their own agreed-upon definition, each of which has meaning proscribed by common agreement of THEIR definitions, whic are, in turn made of more words…..ad infinitum. Or, ad infinitessilum?

What is it you don’t understand? Bursary? It’s an agreement between a sponsor (for example RNAF) and an individual (for example you) whereby the sponsor agrees to pay your tuition fees, expenses, and maybe even pocket money, whilst the individual is in training or full-time education. In return, the individual commits to serving an agreed period of employment with the sponsor after completion of their training or education.

The Night’s Watch is an organization dedicated to defending the realms of Westeros in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.
The Night’s Watch guard the Wall, a huge fortification built primarily of ice located in the far north of Westeros. The Wall is 300 miles (480 km) long (100 leagues) and over 700 feet (210 m) high. It extends from the Frostfangs mountain range in the west to the Bay of Seals in the east. According to Westerosi legend, it was built after the period known as The Long Night by the nearly mythical Brandon the Builder over 8,000 years prior to the present setting, in an attempt to forever shut out the inhabitants of the far north (particularly the Others), who had overrun Westeros during that period, before being turned back by unknown forces. Several mentions in the text suggest that the Wall was much smaller at the time, having been built upon by the Night’s Watch over the centuries to its present size. However, the severely reduced Night’s Watch at the time of the books is limited to irregular maintenance duty. The greatest antagonist to the Watch has been the Others, a race of mystical creatures not seen for thousands of years.
