i use eau de toilette, Opium is my favourite.

Spray it on almost in the same way Asathecomic does, with the exception that i don't spray it on my hands and rub my head, i spray it behind the earlobe's and than use the inner wrist to spread it there.
You don't want it on your hands!

You're somehow right. We Germans do create monster words by compounding them. For example, in 1999 the state legislative of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern created the word "Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz", see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinderkennzeichnungs-_und_Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz for details. But compounding mostly affects nouns, not adjectives. Local adjectives and nouns usually remain separated.

You're also right that local adjectives for a city are usually formed with the suffix "-er", for example Hamburger for something coming from Hamburg, Berliner for something coming from Berlin etc. Following this rule, "water from Cologne" would be "Kölner Wasser" in German.

But eau de cologne is an exception. In this case, the suffix for the local adjective is "-isch" (which is usually used for countries, like the English suffix "-ish" in "English", "Spanish" etc). So, eau de cologne is "Kölnisch Wasser" in German. It is sold as "Kölnisch Wasser" in the German speaking countries for several centuries anyway.

I just use a deodorant, rather than a cologne. I it where to be a cologne, then it would be toilet water (eau de toilette). I think it means that water you put on in the bathroom, which is similar to the start of the word for Cologne. It sounds so much more sophisticated when you say it in French.

I'm sure you shortened it for ease of presentation, however (just in case), the full name of Cologne in the year 50 A.D. was Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (CCAA). I have to be honest, had I not been studying in Germany I wouldn't have known that. It is a relatively little know fact about the town. Kudos for the history lesson though!
