I know that the cetaceans (all whales, dolphins and porpoises) are capable of hemispheric sleep. Since they need to be partially conscious to breathe it's suggested that one half of their brains (hence "hemispheric") shuts down, or sleeps, while the other half is active so the animal can take in breaths. The behavior called 'logging' in whales is when this happens. Off the top of my head I don't know how long this lasts but I think it's interesting nonetheless.

I read recently that dolphins (porpoises, that is) sleep with only half their brain at a time, so technically they don't sleep at all.

In South Africa, the word is pronounced with a hard g, and the vowels are shorter. It sounds like gear-off. The accent is on the second syllable, too.

Marina, you missed a point here. The word "giraffe" is not coming from the arab language. "girafe" is the form used in french, but the arabic word is "zarafa".

I've heard of a few inventors and creators who can't sleep for more than a few hours at a time. That's as close as you can get I think Marina. Though it seems like you and HFP barely get any sleep anyways.

I just heard a joke which I have to share:-
Q. What do you get if you cross a camel with a leopard?
A. A fire-side rug that you can have a good hump on.
