Since they need to be partially conscious to breathe it's suggested that one half of their brains (hence "hemispheric") shuts down, or sleeps, while the other half is active so the animal can take in breaths. The behavior called 'logging' in whales is when this happens. Off the top of my head I don't know how long this lasts but I think it's interesting nonetheless.
