New Projects

Friendly Greetings Fellow Students,

I wanted to keep you posted on some projects I have been working on for HTW. Many of you have given me some new ideas for HFW site. Alx, had an idea for a glossary of words that some of us know about but not others. For example the word morpheme. Sure anyone could look it up, but how would you add it to your vocabulary without knowing how to use it in a conversation? Alx sees that a glossary would invoke conversations about these words and help others learn how they are used in our language. I’m presently looking into the possibility of having Marina adding this to HFW.

Some of you suggested word games. I have found a few that I will look into implementing into HFW. There are many things to consider when adding something like this to an over worked server. Alx found one website called Free Rice. Try it out and tell me what you think. I’m looking into some flash based games that should not interfere with the server and are fun to play. I’ll keep you posed on these developments.

That’s all I have for today. Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. You can always just leave a comment below if you so wish.

Far out… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austronesian_languages Good post! I think Marina should do one with {BREAD}—It is generally agreed that the word was coined 2500 years ago in ancient Greece by the playwright Aeschylus, or whoever else wrote Prometheus Bound (line 11). There the author told as a myth how the primitive creatures that were created to be human, at first had no knowledge, skills, or culture of any kind—so they lived in caves, in the dark, in constant fear for their lives. Zeus, the tyrannical king of the gods, decided to destroy them, but Prometheus, a Titan whose name meant “forethought,” out of his “philanthropos tropos” or “humanity-loving character” gave them two empowering, life-enhancing, gifts: fire, symbolizing all knowledge, skills, technology, arts, and science; and “blind hope” or optimism. The two went together—with fire, humans could be optimistic; with optimism, they could use fire constructively, to improve the human condition.

The new word, φιλάνθρωπος philanthropos, combined two words: φίλος philos, “loving” in the sense of benefitting, caring for, nourishing; and ἄνθρωπος anthropos, “human being” in the sense of “humankind”, “humanity”, or “human-ness”. Prometheus did not “love” the proto-humans individually, because at that mythical point in time individuality did not yet exist—that requires culture.[dubious - discuss] What he evidently “loved”, therefore, was their human potential—what they could accomplish and become with “fire” and “blind hope”. The two gifts in effect completed the creation of humankind as a distinctly civilized animal. ‘Philanthropia’—loving what it is to be human—was thought to be the key to civilization.

    AND … while i’m here, before i forget ..

.. i feel anxious seeing M do one vid per day and working so hard .. mainly cos it makes me guilty about freeloading at her expense …

… so i suggest .. to lighten the burden ..

… free M for at least one day / week by having a guest vid made by one of her .. what’s the word .. registered members of the site.

.. e.g. .. i know cupcake has done a spoof vid, and i asked for a link, but she ignored me (boohoo), so .. that kind of thing could be a good one day / week thing.

I’m completely new to the YouTube culture .. but i think plenty of other members here probably do vids, too – simultaneously do them a favor AND lighten M’s burden.

    :)

oh .. AND … see if there’s an alternate post thing for the thread that allows retrospective editing of the post for at least a short period of time …

.. i guess the practicalities of this are way to complicated .. but i had to dump it outa my brain.

(brought to mind cos i noticed below i said “list ordered by time” when i meant “list ordered by date“, but it’s too late to alter it.

    … oh .. plus …

have this thread as a clear public “site suggestions” thread with a link in that row of navigation links up the top.

    v. good idea to have a place like this for suggestions.

I tend to have loads of rubbish ideas cluttering up my head, but they wont go till i dump them into a place like this (and let someone else see if there’s anything worth considering).

… and it keeps them out of the main word-vid threads.

    :)

That page with the : “All the Words and Phrases” list to the vids …

it might be useful/interesting to have a list ordered by time of publication as well as an alphabetic list.

.. mild suggestion .. mainly comes to mind because i’d find it interesting to see how the style of the vids evolved.

  7. aLx makes a good point with the glossary idea.
A new button for the pulldown menu – joy!
Free Rice has a nice audio pronounciation
feature that came in handy. Good job
