Why is the skin of an orange or lemon called zest.
I am a BIG cooker and I was wondering why it’s called zest.

Hi Marina, i am very curious about the origin of the word “orgasm” and when people have an orgasm they dont use the word orgasm they use the word cum or cumming. where did all of this come from. thank you for you page.

  14. valera says:

    Dear Marina.

My name is Valera and I would like to know the origin of the word “Whatchamacallit”. In the Internet I have found that this expression is shortened version of “what you may call it”. But where did we get “- chama-”, strange combination of the words, isn’t it.
    Thanks a lot.

    Best wishes, Valera.

    • pennsyltucky9 says:

In this case, the “chama” part is from rushing the words “you may” so the phrase in context might be, “Hand me that (what-you-may-call-it) over there.”

      • melikadothechacha says:

Ok – now explain thing-a-ma-jig! LOL

        Whatchamacallit is the brand name
of a candy bar, as its spelt.
It appears to be a portemaneau
        word; using bad grammar, to
        truncate a sentence down to
        a single un-hyphenated word.
It sounds like a word from the
        early industrial age when the
        slang was more polite?

  15. Bob says:

    Congratulations on your bicentennial, Marina.
Enjoy a well earned rest from teaching, but not for too long – we NEEEEED our daily fix.

  16. scribbledlove says:

I would looooooooooooooooooove  to know the word origin of the word etymology

  17. prospero811 says:

Marina, were you upset that Spain beat Russia yesterday in the Euro 2008 competition?

    • BillyB says:

Pity, I wanted to see a Hitman vs aLx finale… big bruhaha, right here at the website. Maybe they could still go at it… just for fun. Good luck to Spain taking on the big white machine.
According to my son , who is a big fan of soccer, (football) Germany was supposed to meet the Dutch in the final, so Russia surprised, getting to the semis.

      • prospero811 says:

There are probably enough Germans around here getting psyched for the game tomorrow. As I generally root for the underdogs, I say “go Spain!”

  18. superdanilchik says:

I really hope that such a cute video with such tender pictures could even have an awakening effect against those hideous crimes(abondonment, maltreatment…) against our best friends :!:

  19. prospero811 says:

Regarding why there is a cat at the end of the video, my guess is that you are trying to restart the evolution/natural selection debate.

Cats and dogs share a common ancestor that lived a hundred million years ago.. Most mammalian “orders” (not species) then differentiated during the Paleocene epoch (65 to 55 million years ago) and can be recognized from Eocene (55 – 33 million year old) fossils.

The Creodonts, primitive meat-eaters which originated in the northern hemisphere, evolved during the Paleocene, and most were extinct by the Pliocene Epoch (5.2 million years ago). The family Carnivora, which includes dogs and cats (and bears, weasels, etc.), descended from the Creodonts, which included forms similar to the cats, dogs, hyenas and weasels.

Roughly 55 million years ago, a mammal with carnassials (teeth used for tearing flesh) evolved from the creodonts. For the next ten million years, a number of these animals evolved and flourished. Most of these small animals resembled weasels or civets. It was during this time that the Miacis of the family Miacidae, from which the dogs, cats, and some other animals evolved.

Cat lovers may be pleased to know that cats existed for millions of years before the first dogs. Or, maybe dog lovers will claim that dogs are more “evolved” than cats.

But, these arch-nemeses do, in fact, share a common ancestor and are therefore, in a sense, long, lost cousins.

  20. annai says:

I would love the know the origin of the word “Swedish”, Since I live in Sweden I think it would be very interesting too know a little about the words background!

Please pick my word! I would be so happy if you did :D

    Thanks!
    /Anna

    • prospero811 says:

      That’s when you’re not a full Swede. You’re just “Swede-ish.” Hahahahahahahahahha!

    • superdanilchik says:

It derives from your ancestors’ Proto-Germanic language: SWIHONIZ therefore means ”ONE’S OWN”,certainly referring to one’s own Germanic tribe…but this is just a modest answer, watching Marina’s video will be another thing though….

  21. dale_jr_fan_88 says:

I saw this synbol in a story on the internet — PLEASE do a video on what it means :!: That was another GREAT video :!:

  22. cruizerstylin says:

Gary Vaynerchuk in his 200th show has 2 comments & at this time 221 views on youtube, (not the only place he’s viewed) with 233 responses on his website “winelibrary.com”. He is considered very succesfull & well respected, my shop foreman watches him daily on his lunch hour & hasn’t missed a show. Some 489 or so shows posted on youtube & all the views on all his videos added up, don’t equal the views paparazzi has in one week. I’ve got John watching your videos now too & when he misses one, he asks me what the word of the day was, & I tell him what you were wearing.(and the word too)
You’ve got a unique gift Marina & I’m impressed how you developed it and use it. Glad to have been a part of your class. Have felt like more than just a student though, more like an invited guest. Like others have expressed, feel this little thing you started such a short while ago has affected my life in a positive way & just want to say thanks to you & wish you continued success & God’s blessings as yoiu go forward from here. Cheering you on \o/

    • pedantickarl says:

      BillyB,
Thank you for your heartfelt gratitude and I relate to your story.

I have a friend with whom I have been exchanging word origins for years. We always talk about funny words, origins and such. I told her about Marina last year and she signed up way before I did. (I’m an unassuming introvert)

Now, when I go up to my friend and say, “Guess what I learned today?”, she comes back with, “OK, don’t tell me, I bet this has something to do with Marina?”, then, we both crack up because we know that Marina has made an impact. Then, I fill her in on what I learned and the things that Marina has inspired in me.

Like you BillyB, I also feel like an invited guest.
Thank you Marina for sharing your passion with us.

    • Warren says:

      BillyB,
I believe that you’ve expressed, very clearly, all of our feelings.
Thank you BillyB and Marina, thank you for all of your efforts.
This site has affected so many people in a positive way that any more of an explanation is not enough.
Marina thank you for opening the door and letting us come in.

    • okay4now says:

Screw that. Do the word soccer :!:

    • melikadothechacha says:

I’m keeping Marina’s secret to myself.
Initially, I told a bunch of my associates
but they’re all “odd ducks”. At some
point they will “discover” Marina and
by then I will be old skool, Until then,
these guys will have to be happy
      with video’s like 2 girls 1 cup – yuck!
When the deluge hits, I’ll be at the
crest in the wave. I like to bodysurf
so that puts me exactly where I
like it! Besides, It’ll be fun to watch
more newbs ask for all the dirty words
they can think of – there is a limit
to that, y’know. Once that the hook
has set we’ll just keep reeling them
in and edjakating them. I’ll catch ‘em,
you guys can skin ‘em and inviscerate
‘em and Marina can clean ‘em & fry ‘em.
She seems to have a knack for being
able to deal with all us personality
types – from WWF and NASCAR types
to horn rimmed studious types, and
      us “regular” guys, too.

From the pics, I see Marina attracts
a few good looking girls to her site.
I dated a girl who attracted a bevy
      of beauties around her everytime
we would go out. I was a little
      jealous, I guess and remarked
to her that “she gets all the pu$$y”
      She just smiled and said:
      “Aren’t you glad I share?”
      Love that girl…

  26. toma_calin86 says:

 since you already have done “mutt” and talked about dogs, can you please tell me about the phrase “dog gone”? thank you.

You are the best and a sweetheart!!!
    A thousand hugs and kisses… ♥♥♥

Thank you for the recognition of my dog Spot.

    P.S.
For those of you not from Calif, there are automobile commercials on TV where the owner of the business is seen in the commercial with his dog Spot. In the commercial, his dog Spot is always different and could be a monkey, a camel, a cat, a snake or some other animal which is always named as his dog Spot.

    • pennsyltucky9 says:

Cal Worthington, I think. Yeah, some of those were purt redickless. It worked as an ad gimmick, though. In all likelihood, neither you nor I have bought a car from that guy, but we both recognize and recall the gimmick years later. Go see Cal, Go see Cal, Go see Cal!

  37. labbatt78 says:

the 2nd dog picture is exactly what my dog looks like whoever sent it. A golden lab. The only difference is that my dog is a she.

  38. errin says:

This website is going to the dogs! Literally!

Congrats on your 200th video, Marina. I’ve probably caught only half of the videos so far, but I must admit I have learned a lot about philology and other philophile-related info. Keep up the good work! Peace, Errin

p.s. Kobe is still the cutest dog of all. Me, I want a dog like Columbo, and it can wear a doggy-sized raincoat. I’d name it Columbo Dog, and it would solve crimes.

  39. vasdrugleonard says:

I love your videos, you attitude, your style…I only wish you were crazy about middle aged Italian men who rescue stray dogs and find them homes.
200 hundred videos?, I’ll watch when you’ve done 2000!~ We should all be very smart by then with Vocabularys out the wazzoo…hmm Wazoo, I wonder the origin of that strange word?

  40. lividemerald says:

Next time it rains cats and dogs, I’ll check to see if any of these critters are dropping in for a visit.

      • CaptainJack says:

I have a few pictures of my sister’s pussy. I even have videos! He’s a very large Maine Coon. He’s not to smart! But fun to watch him chase the laser beam. My sister calls him budda boy. Or just a freak in his weird mood days.
        .
        .
What!?! I heard that back there! Yea, you in the back! Your sick!

      • Warren says:

On an episode of Johnny Carson one of the Gabor (Zsa Zsa or Ava) sisters was a guest and she had brought her cat with her. She sat there petting it while she talked and Johnny kept looking up at the camera like “can you believe this”. At one point she looked up at Johnny and asked him if he’d like to pet her pussy? Johnny smiled and said, “Sure, if you get that damn cat off of your lap”.

      • lividemerald says:

Johnny Carson was a comic genius.

The one thing that pisses me off more than anything is a blockhead that rips on someone much smarter than they are. Two, and any blockhead that tries to insult any of my friends will get one hell of a tongue lashing. I even had a friend on YT (Nightflyer – Dave) asked me to make some comments about this one blockhead that thought it was stupid to fly a RC helicopter without a tail rotor. I think it was a great way to practice flying just in case your tail rotor failed. Some people just need to keep their traps shut!…. :???:

    • CaptainJack says:
