Not everyone at Jonestown died. There are a handful of survivors living today. Not everyone who died was a cultist or perished from cyanide. Many died from gunshot wounds, including a US Congressman and several reporters. Not everyone who died from cyanide drank the “Kool-Aid.” Some were given forced injections. The “Kool-Aid” was used to make the children more willing to drink the bitter substance (Potassium Cyanide). Though they used Flavor-Aid, Jim Jones, in at least one documentary, refers to having an abundance of grape/purple Kool-Aid.

The music linked above is from “Mexican Moon” by Concrete Blonde, and includes a clip of one of Jim Jones’ last speeches. He had brainwashed his followers into believing that the US government was going to storm the complex and murder everyone.

Actually, I thought the expression went back to the 1960′s and Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters and their Acid Tests. These were more or less public parties during which vats of Kool-Aid laced with LSD were brought out: one was “electric” (dosed with LSD)and one was not. If you drank the “electric” Kool-Aid and got into the spirit of things, you “passed the Acid Test.” A lot of hippies “drank the Kool-Aid” way before anybody heard of Jim Jones.

YES YES YES!”drink the kool aid” is ambiguous…has more than one meaning so when used in conversation the listener should ask “how do you mean that”,in order to accurately understand the speaker of the phrase.The electic kool-aid acid test-Kesey book is what I associate first and then consider if the Jim Jones connotation applies and then consider if the speaker meant “flavor aid” or just the sugar water powder”kool aid”.
