  • http://captainjack.ws captainjack

I wish I could answer that but I don’t want to take way from Marina’s thunder.

    Interesting quote on Marina’s site.

“All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher.” – Ambrose Bierce 1842-1914 – Quote from HFW website.

  • sxcat

I was starting to look up April Fools day on Wikipedia when I heard on the radio that Obama was selecting Bill O’Reilly as his running mate and I totally lost my concentration.

Anybody want to pick a bone with the French, who say “Poisson d’avril” (April fish)?
By the way, Avril Lavigne was born in Seprtember. Go figure!

  • http://www.kunstscheiss.de alx

and her last name is an anagram to “evil nag”. or “live nag”. whatever.

    duh.

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

Of course, the translation of her French name is: April the Vine. I suppose you could find Vine Gal in a word scramble of Lavigne.

  • berriedalive

I read that the construction crane in NYC collapsed on a bar called “foo bar”. Of course we’ve all heard of the band foo fighters, egg foo young, fumanchu etc. I recall that the French feu is fire. Do all these word connect, somehow?

  • svish

got your card, and…. i care!! I wanted to know :???:

  • http://hotforwords.com Marina

Did you get it dimitristrobbe? Plus.. you see that I added gravatars? You were the first person who I think had one!

  • http://hotforwords.com Marina

svish, the problem is that nobody really knows the origin of April Fools.. it *could* have something to do with the switch from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian calendar.. which occurred right around this date.. but it doesn’t explain how the date spread throughout the rest of the world that didn’t make the switch.

That’s why I didn’t complete the story as it may not be accurate.

  • svish

i something not even marina managed to figure out of  oh well. thanks for the reply though! :) Your videos are very very interesting :)

  • ragabashmoon

I discovered Hot for Words early April 1st, when I had to type in “Drinking the Kool-Aid” to actually get to the right video. So, I didn’t actually sign up on the site until later in the day. :(

So, I’d love if I could get the April Fool’s card anyway, if not I’ll understand.

Oh, and everyone, fill out her iTunes or YouTube survey! *wink wink nudge nudge*

  • mrdave70

  • mikecreighton

the word is FUBAR old militay saying F—up Up Beyond All Repair
also SNAFU Situation Normal All F—ed Up

  • http://www.kunstscheiss.de aLx

in internet slang, fubar mostly means fucked up beyond all recognition.

  • berriedalive

FUBAR actually has roots before that and derivations after… which have quite different meanings. the question is, do they relate?

  • marcwade

Word request: Why is the possessive for “it” not “it’s” ? If I’m referring to something belong to the dog, I write “that is the dog’s bowl” but if I refer to the dog in the third person, I write “that is its bowl” not “that is it’s bowl.”

Your videos are very entertaining and enlightening!

  • marcwade

Pronunciation question: Why do the English and American pronunciations of some words differ so greatly? For example, we say “KAHN-trow-ver-see” but Brits say “kahn-TRAHV-er-see”.

Same word, same language, but very different.

Or our “ah-LOO-min-um” and their “al-you-MIN-ee-um” (which doesn’t even match the spelling!)

  • http://emmy-de-zelaware.com lividemerald

Why not continue this conversation over a toxic drink down at the  Snafu Bar?

  • timthered

Foo Fighters is a WWII term that US Army Air Corps personell used for UFO’s

  • timthered

I never got my card. Was the whole thing an April Fools joke?

  • donfelipegonzales

    Dear teacher,
Is the April fools connected to the fool’s day (le jour des fous en français)? I remember an old medieval fest, during which the lackey could become a king and a king a lackey.
    Respectfully,
    Don Felipe

  • ingrid s.

Could you please explain the word:
    Blindfold

    Thanks in advance,
    Ingrid.
