    This is funny!

He wants to know the origin of the “F” word, which is actually quite interesting. Someone told me it was derived from a phrase that was part of a rule set by a historic monarch: Fornucate upon concept of the king.

But I don’t know if that is true or not. Is it?

  • http://hotforwords.com Marina

trgoblin.. I didn’t get into it as I am going to do a video on it soon.

  • macadoo

You did well. Its too bad you had to be interviewed by a neanderthal.

  • BillyB

Cheers Marina. I think he learned something.

  • defiant4eva

I heard that the “F” word is is derived from a slogan they would write on the prison and/or house doors of people convicted of a sexual crime or who used sex as an occupation ie prostitutes. The slogan was “Foreign understanding of carnal knowledge”. Now I had heard this story many years ago, so am not completely sure if it is true or not and can’t remember which country it originated from, but like every story true or not there is a hint of truth in them. I hope this helps with your investigations Marina…

Seems like to me you’ve already gotten the hang of it. I know you have had multiple proposals of marriage. I’m a little older and smarter. Beautiful and intelligent as you are I’d rather to be your agent!

Speaking of agents.. just exactly who am I gonna point the BBC at if they want to ask you for a guest spot perhaps? ;)

Charming as ever Marina. Maxim radio is just like Maxim magazine though. The only thing that is not instantly forgettable is you

Well keep making those spots Marina, and let me know if you still want me to tease you every now and again. You ought never become too busy for amused thinking :)

This is awesome. You should be featured in Maxim magazine and you could get even more popular!
Also the HotForWords dictionary is a good idea!

  • robroy87801

I agree with #2 he was a neanderthal, I listened, you were great he was a jerk.

  • slipperynoodle20

I know it wouldn’t cross your mind but you should have stolen that microphone. Your voice never sounded as good a match to your persona.

    Your faithful student(not pupil)
    Tom

Is it true that googleplex is an number? A 1 with 100 zeros after it?

If so, who came up with it and are all the numbers between billion and googleplex named?

    Hello Marina,

The pages for the Sirius Maxim Radio “Stretch Show” show numbers 2, 3 and 4, which are listed below, are missing the audio file:

    http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/03/28/maxim-radio-fourth-show/ http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/03/07/maxim-radio-third-show/ http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/02/22/maxim-radio-stretch-show-2nd-appearance/

But there is some info at this link.

Now why the words function and fungus are related via: M.Fr. fonction, from O.Fr. function, from L. functio (gen. functionis) “performance, execution,” from functus, pp. of fungi “perform, execute, discharge.” but the f-word is unrelated to a root meaning perform, execute, discharge is indeed mystifying! (What does a static fungus have to do with perform, execute, discharge?) Please explain the lack of connection between the f-word and a root meaning perform, execute, discharge.

PS: But “the onus of proof is on he who asserts the positive” — one cannot explain a negative; one can explain a connection, but not a lack of connection.

  • hs4mm

I found some additional information that confuses matters a lot: fungi is supposedly related to the Sanskrit bhuṅkte (bhunkte) meaning “he enjoys”. Now don’t both perform, execute, discharge and he enjoys appear to be the perfect roots for the f-word???
