		<description>You&#039;re almost right.  Instead of reducing a number or population BY one-tenth, decimation actually means reducing it TO one-tenth of the original number or population.  So it really means a 90% reduction, as in reducing a population to just 10% of its original numbers.  

That&#039;s why it&#039;s used to indicate widespread destruction-- 90% of whatever you&#039;re measuring would be obliterated. </description>
