    Hey Marina

In the UK, by putting the word really in front of nice it can actually be a good thing eg “She was really nice.” or “I had a really nice time.” Without the really it wouldn’t be a good thing to hear.

    Take care x

always felt the nice word a little, meaningless, cheap if you will. in fact, i would say that Nice should not be a word at all. There should be a law against it! :???:

After hitting the random lesson tab, I got a ni.. great lesson on the word nice. I still don’t look at it as a bad word, No doubt I will look at it with a little more of a suspisious mind from now on.

There may be more roots to the less positive connotations of this word. At least as far back as the 14th Century it was sometimes used to mean “wanton, loose-mannered, lascivious”. In 1366 Chaucer wrote “Nyce (“nice”) she was, but she mente noone harme ne slight in hir entente, But oonely lust and jolyte”. The spelling is a bit outdated, but I think the meaning comes through pretty well. The word carried opposite meanings. As early as 1573 it was used to mean effeminate, unmanly, so maybe that’s part of the word’s transition to its current status as a “kiss of death” in the dating scene. Anyhow, I love HFW’s pursuance of her chosen strand of the word’s history.

IMPORTANT QUESTION MARINA? DURING WHAT PERIOD IN TIME DID THE ENGLISH TRANSFORM THE USE OF THE WORD NICE?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/bsomebody13 bsomebody

See, this vid is pretty cool. Do you really think four and a half minutes is too long?

  • leonard

    good job

Now there you see – another thing I’ve known all my life turned on it’s head…

I was always being nice just to get presents from Santa! So what does that imply about me?

And then also, why was Santa trying to get me to be like that?

Just what is really going on here anyway? :???:

Having problems with the comment thing….Are you?

This marks the first time that HFW decides to investigate! Her humor is coming out more and more too with her funnies at the end of the videos. Marina has always had it!

    It is nice!
I love that ending. That ending still surprises me.
I always had a feeling that the word nice had that
negative tinge to it and now I know why. Great lesson.

  • iluv2cutfarts

P.S. Karl – nice tweet on resistance!

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Marina caught me by surprise on that one.
    That was such a treat.
I wonder how she knew it was me? LOL

  • iluv2cutfarts

You know I am still pretty Anti on Twitter, but it looks like you’re identified by the @ symbol?

  • http://www.hotforwords.com/members/pedantickarl/ pedanticKarl

Yes, the AT symbol is how one directs one’s communications.
An AT-symbol at the very beginning is what is called an AT-Reply and an AT-symbol in the middle of a sentence is called an AT-mention just like you can use here on this site.

For example, if I mention your name like this @iluv2cutfarts
you will be notified that I mentioned you in a sentence. You can go to your Activity page and click on your Mentions link and you can see who mentioned you.

  • iluv2cutfarts

Yeah – I’ve seen that. I’ll probably never join Twitter though. Could you imagine? People would lose their F’in minds.
