    Dear teacher,
    Thank you very much for this very interesting lesson. What is strange is that in french, femelle is now used to qualify animals and not human being. In french we say “femme” ou “fille” for the young ones.
    Thank you.
    Amicalement.

    Yes I believe we males are evil. Some say we only have one thing on our minds. I say not true we do have to eat :lol:

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/ggpjstokesjr1 stokesjrj1

    You are absolutely wrong in analysis of these words. The meaning of male and female predates any known recorded history. The meaning of the words male and female was set in words at the very beginning of the creation of the existence of man, god created man, male and female created he them I.E. man, a male and a female two separate individuals’ but equals. Of the same species. The first of any species.

    stokesjrj1, so God speaks English?

    God can speak any language he needs too to discipline his creations. Don,t mistake the physical person limitations as a lack of not being his servant, after all I AM a Gabriel And only speak with that he has deemed needed, as too your question, he speaks whorebait.

    Hi?

  • BillyB

    stokesjrj1…

    You are absolutely wrong in analysis of these words.

    a rather bold statement, & wrong.
    “male and female created he them” is a translation into english from the first book of the Pentateuch. a book atributed to Moses, who spoke & was educated in at least two languages (Hebrew & Egyptian).
    Marina explains how we got our english words for Male & Female & it does not conflict with the scripture text you quote.
    A more interesting subject to me is the story of The Tower of Babel. As I have not done the secular studies of the origins of languages & how they develope. I was wondering if the “Genesis” account is given a look at the secular university level. I know bible scholars like to discuss (argue) about the validity of the subject and geneologies.
    I find also interesting,”When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God “(bene elohim, LXX: “angels”). “For the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage… “(Deuteronomy 32:8-9) But I don’t want to start anything here with the mormons…
    I don’t know what “redhorse” is on about with “whorebait”.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/ggpjstokesjr1 stokesjrj1

    I am not here to debate with you .I am no Morman. Read my statement from the beginning it predates any known recorded history. Get you facts straight. Everything God Created he Created from 1 simple element, water.

  • geronimo

    Sorry to come in so late on this one, but Jr. you are missing the point. Marina didn’t say that the concept of female and male were invented at those particular times, she just said the ENGLISH words were. In the Genesis account the words for female and male were written in ancient Hebrew. Female and male are what WE say in modern English, and the Jews said something different.

    Where in the bible does it say that God created everything from water? It says he created men from the ground, and the ground was is not made up of water. “He created the heavens and the earth” are the heavens made of water, is the sun made of water?

  • prospero811

    You’ll need to think this through a bit.

    English has only been around in something close to its present form for several hundred years. Every word Marina has expounded upon has meanings that predate the English language. The word ‘love” for example, has meanings that predate recorded history as well.

    Marina is discussing the etymology of English words.

    1 First God made heaven & earth 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. 6 And God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. 9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day

    Where did the light come from and the light was the spirit of god

  • BillyB

    Hi Geronimo, I don’t know where the water Idea is coming from??? Maybe because the human body has so much H2O content… anyways I agree with you when you say the ground “dust of the earth” Meaning to the more scientific sorts, common elements, found naturally, on, or in the ground, but the spark of life comes from God. The amazing part to me is, I guess you could call it, the Origional creation. Like how did all the elements come into being…God spoke… “the word”… beyond human comprehension.
    It’s amazing to me how one little question, by Marina, can generate a thread of discussion on an older page. cool

  • BillyB

    Hi prospeo811, yeah english is very young, could it be too young? hence the word “love” gets so misused or misunderstood. Should we propose some new words for love (to explain) or that a disclaimer should always be attached to it’s usage. :razz:

    I wonder…

    Just kidding :grin:

  • poduck

    You and your fancy words. Male may mean evil, but I can mathematically prove that woman = evil.

    To get a woman you need time and money.
    woman = money x time

    Time is money, so
    woman = money x money

    Money is the root of all evil, so
    woman = √evil x √evil

    which reduces to
    woman = evil

    Isn’t math fun? :wink:

    More fun it is and do you have “change” for a One hundred stars? :wink:

    I didn’t follow the biblical debate… but, using the King James Bible we see in Genesis 2:23

    “And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

    The same passage in Torah reads,

    “And the man said: ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’”

    In both instances neither the word “male” or “female” is used, but rather “man” and “woman”. In Hebrew the term for man is “ish” (אִישׁ) (pronounced “eesh”) and the term for woman (and wife) is “ishah” (אִשָּׁה) (pronounced “ish-shah”). I hope that may clear up any confusion concerning biblical word usage.

    In a similar vein, among many biblical scholars it is believed that man’s sin nature is inherited through the father (paralleling Marina’s coincidental comment about evil and male). This does not mean that women have no sin nature, only that children do not inherit it from their mothers.

    This is about the dress shown here http://tinyurl.com/d9ovyx and in the eight (8) pictures here http://tinyurl.com/6wq7bm that is designed to emphasize part of the female form (but not the entire female form).

    I assume that the dress will protect the wearer’s privacy no matter what activity the wearer engages in during the course of the evening — because from the side-view it appears that there might be a metal-based lining that locks the drape on the breasts. It must have taken a great deal of thought and effort to come up with the material, the folds, and the locking mechanism so that the wearer’s breasts remain hidden while giving the impression that at any moment — at the slightest breeze or at the slightest movement — the folds will move away to reveal everything. The top gives the wearer full freedom for action — it looks like she would be able to play tennis wearing that top and yet maintain her privacy at all times!

    The purse, the bracelet, the earrings, the arms, and the forehead-emphasizing hairstyle form an upward pointing arrow-head that is parallel to the draped covering of the upper body. This helps draw attention to the entire upper feminine form while emphasizing the scantiness of the covering and the challenge of the revelation.

    But the rest of the dress is a disappointment. It is just a shapeless, heavy chunk of fabric. The human form is not emphasized — one can’t see any shapely behind or legs (buttocks, thighs, calves or feet) — everything below the waist is just one big shapeless blob.

    It looks like the person is balancing precariously on a single point of contact with the ground (like standing with both feet tied together at the ankle — trying to keep erect like a vertical mermaid would have to). Also, the bottom of the dress looks like an unhygienic, heavy mass that the wearer has to drag along — the bottom acts like a ball and chain.

    While the top gives the impression that the wearer could play tennis while preserving her privacy, the bottom gives the impression of static death — of a person who might topple and fall due to being erect on a single point of contact and of a person who can’t even budge an inch because of the ball and chain.

    If “male” = evil in Latin, would “female” in Latin then mean that “evil sucks”?
