Dear teacher,
As usual great performance (even if I agree with the comments about your health). Interesting history. What I read was bit less hard about this Hashishin. It seems that they have struggled with the occidentals and the arabs depending of the balance of powers. Isn’t there another theory about the word “assassin”? I ve not verified the information, but some pal of mine says that the Hashish eater theory is not the only one.

I had heard that the name of the leader of the Hashishin was a man name Hassan I Sabbah and that the word hashish was derived from his name. A shadowy figure, to say the least. Not much info to be found on him.

I have a theory about the term “terrorism” being used by politicians and news media as an inflammatory tool to negatively portray groups or individuals whith whom major world powers are in disagreement.

But this isn’t the place to start political discussions. It would be interesting to look into the uses of the word terrorism and see how it’s been evolving over the years, though. The present administration seems to have elevated it to new heights.

Yes there IS another ‘theory’, despite what historians think of the root of the word Hassashia (arabic) stems from an ‘Arabic’ root: the word assass meaning “guardian”!!
I sincerely doubt that a group of guys, stoned on ANY drug, could have planted nine daggers in Saladin’s pillow without waking him up or stumbling. Obviously historians would like us to believe that they were ‘hopped up’ on hashish, but that just wasn’t the case…

Marina, hi from Ukraine!! :razz: :razz: Thanks a lot for video, but I have have some doubts about origins of word hashishiins, because in arabic language the word “Hashish” mean “the grass” and “the marijuana”. But the ancien assassin didn’t use cannabis, only opium, but it’s a product of opium poppy, not the cannabis.

This info is from etymology online, and it appears to agree with my Oxford English Dictionary…
from Arabic hashishiyyin “hashish-users,” pl. of hashishiyy, from hashish (q.v.). A fanatical Ismaili Muslim sect of the time of the Crusades, under leadership of the “Old Man of the Mountains” (translates Arabic shaik-al-jibal, name applied to Hasan ibu-al-Sabbah), with a reputation for murdering opposing leaders after intoxicating themselves by eating hashish. The pl. suffix -in was mistaken in Europe for part of the word

This from the OED:
lit. ‘a hashish-eater, one addicted to hashish,’ both forms being applied in Arabic to the Ismaeli sectarians, who used to intoxicate themselves with hashish or hemp, when preparing to dispatch some king or public man.

Marina, do you have a hard copy of the OED or do you subscribe to the online OED or both? Also what other references you use? You seem to have all the background stories behind the traditional definitions. I’m just curious as a cat. :cool:

Cannabis or Opium? That is the question. It’s both. You are both correct. Hash is often made from cannabis and opium. I haven’t smoked opium in decades. i guess I’ll have to go to Afghanistan. :roll:

Not that I recommend hash, but I would like to abuse it some more,
for ol’ times sake, legally of course. There’s different kinds of hashish. Moroccan hash would be different than hash made in Afghanistan. And the hash would vary due to the potency and species of pot it was made of. And the kicker is, I was made to understand, is that hash is cut with opium. Or vice versa. Which explains the sleepiness of it. How much opium is in it? Who knows. Just another reason why it should be legalized. Back when I enjoyed it, pot was usually low in potency, compared to the altered and manicured product of today. So modern day marijuana puts hash to shame. Hashish travels easier. Hashish would be a novelty, if there was good pot available at the same time. Pot is the better high, for the long term use.

This is my favorite lesson because the teacher is so close. :wink:
For an experiment, maybe the camera should be even closer. I would love to see a lesson where only dear teacher’s blue eyes filled up the entire screen. There are other close-ups that would be worthwhile, too.

funny you should mention opium .. i spent a month in Afghanistan (some time before the west decided it deserved a murderfest) – and had some straight opium there .. it was pure bliss .. all my sensations and vision was filtered through a blissful lens. Now, i’ve tried heroin too – but that just didn’t take for me, fortunately (i just felt disembodied and afterwards it kind of felt pointless), i guess because i was heavily into acid and lsd is heroin’s enemy. .. but opium was real nice .. i dont remember feeling sleepy or drowsy in any way – just nice and absolutely clear and transported into a pleasurable place (which perfectly countered the arduous physical discomforts of my journey nicely) – having said that .. i don’t think opium would have stood up to an acid onslaught either.

Heroin is not recommend. I’ve not had opium, myself, but one afternoon, high in the Santa Cruz mtns., a friend took me to a garden that had poppies growing in it. He made verticle slits in a few of bulbs of those poppies, and we took a walk. A little later, we came back and the slits on those poppies had a drop of white milky liquid that we wet a cigarette paper with. We drove over to another house and let the paper dry. Then he rolled a joint, and 6 people sitting at a picnic table smoke it. It was a very clean feeling throughout the body. Very pleasant. Easy to see how opiates can be addicting.

“Heroin is not recommend.” – lol yeh .. you’re not kidding … i mean … if not for the drug itself, then for the circumstances. I was 17 or 18 and completely free of all constraints working only when i needed money and enjoying festivals n music n getting my head round acid (which was my ongoing intellectual challenge). My small country town was a smoking and tripping place and heroin wasn’t something you’d normally see around. Cept, one day in the pub someone says .. do you want to try some heroin .. and i jump up and say “yes!” (always yearning for more fantastic weird experiences). We go to a friend’s flat and i sit in a chair in the kitchen. A guy heats up some stuff in a spoon and draws in into a syringe. then he does the thing were he pushes out the air. then i get a rubber band round the top of my arm and he finds a vein. He pushes the needle in and draws out on the plunger to pull blood to mix into the body of the syringe. Then he slowly pushes the plunger in – except i don’t remember much of that part at all … i only remember being in the next room sort of utterly disassociated – sort of looking down onto myself sprawled on the floor. It was a completely nothing experience. Null. Non-existence. Someone asked me later if i liked the rush .. i had no memory of it.

So .. definitely .. i think the most dangerous thing about stuff like heroin isn’t the drug itself, it’s the circumstances.

Having an ex-junkie in the family, I’d say you were fortunate.
Also, having tried psychedelics scores of times, i would not recommend LSD. Mushrooms and Peyote and their synthetic versions would be the better way to go. Fukcing acid, I remember when the trees were angry at me…damn! I could’ve used some of that opium-laced hash. One time though, while wandering down the side streets of Waikiki, stoned on some blotter acid, I saw the White Light of the Void, wonderful (ha-ha), for all the good it’s done me.

the acid i was into was generally microdot from the era before Operation Julie. … then a big gap til i had some in a Goth club some years ago .. and since then nothing.

I was always of the opinion you have to take acid seriously .. like flying a plane .. you cant just jump in and waggle the controls and expect the experience to be pleasant .. i think it’s partly about figuring how your mind works.

Feels like she filmed this one on an airplane. I was waiting for a stewardess to knock on the door. She needs to get into a studio like hotforprofits. Although some of the charm would be lost.

This word history is accurate. I bet Suicide bombers today have some similar brainwashing or pain drug hypnosis thing going on. doing that ain’t natural.

Read Théophile Gautier “Hashishin club” (though im not too sure about its english title..) – there he mentioned that eating hash came from arabs.

Also, there is an interesting fact about a word keef – arabs used this word to name a condition when you are most relaxed after eating hash.
